The last target is 3560MB, which is about 3.47GB of space. But that’s over 60 months (5 years) away!"
I wouldn't doubt them increasing that to much much more in the future. Especially with all that new space left from deleting all those google search records :) - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+78Yeah, but they also give you.. you know, cable internet.
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+75But I've been using Gmail for close to 3 years and I'm at around 500 mb without deleting much. No worries that I'll run out in the next five year.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+67all spam messages that are more than 30 days old are deleted automatically..
- Shizlanski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+57So you're the reason my internets arrive 3 days after it was sent!!!!?!
- sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -10/+63And Optimum Online which charges $45.00 per month gives you 500mb, and an extra 500mb if you upgrade for an additional $14.95 per month.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -9/+472,800MB x 1 billion people = 341,796,875 gigs = 333,786.011 tbs(terabytes) of data = 325.962901 petabytes!!!
Thats... a lot of HDs! - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40Of course they're overselling it. Not that many people use all their space, and I'm sure the ad revenue pays for most of the upkeep (as the ads on Gmail cannot be removed by most ad blockers).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45Pretty soon Google will start paying its Gmail users based upon the CPM our sent emails receive (within the Gmail network.) Yay!
Ohp! Now if they do that, I get 10% for the idea. - MrZop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24What does it matter anymore? the simple fact is, we have more than enough room. I doubt more than 0.01 percent of users have ever reached max. and with it ever increasing, why even have the counter? It's a pointless statistic nowadays.
And if you really need that much room in your e-mail, either invest in some online hosting for your storage, or switch to a Pop3 style e-mail that can be backed up.
me:

It' s the usual 'my dad is bigger than your dad' (or in this case, 'Our webmail is bigger than Yahoo/MSN webmail') - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Search for messages with attachments, download them, delete messages. Done.
- chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18David:
It is just a selling point. Plus it looks cool. - BladeMelbourne, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22't = 2 characters. You must be from India?
- op12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Not to mention that email is almost all text, which compresses greatly. So they actually don't need nearly as much space as they're providing you even if you are using most of it.
Also, I posted the original source of this story and it looks like some sites were questioning what I based it on. I took the values right from the Gmail login page...anyone can hit "view source" and see for themselves. Google puts an array of storage amount and a corresponding time, so I used some simple Javascript to figure out what the amount of time would be. Those times were calculated as of March 13th.

- Boghiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13So at a glance, Gmail will increase with just 700MB in 5 years. That doesn’t look so promising. However, noting the history of Google events that took place on the 1st of April, I took the liberty of guessing a few directions regarding this issue.
* Google could announce the new quota will be actually available now, instead of 5 years, and everyone would be happy.
* Google could speed up the increasing process and a realistic quota will be available much sooner.
* Google could keep things just the way they are (regarding Gmail) for 1st of April this year and focus on another prank.
That’s for Google to plan, and for us to find out. - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Sometimes gmail gets it wrong. Often I've had to wade through my spam box (teehee) to find old emails.
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Read this article about the Google Servers...
http://www.ics.uci.edu/%7Emayur/google_servers.html
This is my attemp to tackle the greatest question of modern times: how many blade PCs does Google run? The initial guess in 2003 was 10,000 and then recently the consensus seems to be in the order of 100,000. But these have remained guesses at best. Here, I'll try and see if this number can be deduced, from various requirements (network BW, storage, CPU, etc..).
At the time at post he was guessing 11 petabytes of HDs. - BrasilianMK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13POP3 email account?
HMMMMMMM.
Maybe you should try GMAIL!
They do after all have free POP3 access unlike most other accounts around
GMAIL is cool - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Is there a way to set gmail to auto delete spam?
i wish i can take adv of the current 2.7 GB
but Australian internet has an upload speed cap - Agent_M, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Good. Maybe I've been spoiled, but my Gmail account's nowhere near 1/4 fulland for some reason I'm already feeling cramped.
- ko8e34, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I am using like 10% of my main. I see that anthony is using a lot, but does the average person need 3.5 gigs of online storage?
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+110% (=10MB)
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I think he meant to say "Can't" but couldn't figure out those extra three characters.
- TROGDOR42, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Nope, try again. A DVD stores 4.7 GB of data.
- chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Woo! 2%!
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16But the name is SO much cooler!
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8umm... 100-150 emails a day? are you all sending porn pictures to each other?
But seriously, what are you sending? - Jabjabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm one of those people who keeps my Gmail clean, regularly clean it out of all the trash, after 18 months on it it's only using about 100MB now so I'm not complaining about this for a very long time. Until we can send 1GB mail between users I wouldn't be worried at all. ;)
- traviscaruth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7re-invite yourself and you have another 3 gigs...
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@1randomguy
If we had fttn then we wouldn't need a host in the middle, just stream direct to each other...
Also,
"You are currently using 424 MB (14%) of your 2829 MB."
Been using it since 2004... - Latka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So, it's impossible for Google to change the counter rate?
Don't assume the speed rate of the counter is always the same, it varies A LOT. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11what's next, a digg story that GMal accounts have reached 3.48 GB? Then 3.49 GB?
Marked as lame. - jellystones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I doubt they would continue letting you use their service if you filled up your inbox with a couple terabytes
- ricepudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't get your hopes up of seeing your email again.
My advice is always backup your gmail using your favourite pop client. - AlfaWolph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Because 30 megs more would have gone just too far..
- Latka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Remember that phrase, "640kb ought to be enough for anyone"? :P
Watch out, in like 5 years, 3.5 gb online for the average persona will be small. Specially when you consider projects like YouOS. - Latka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you got to that point, I can assure you that about 40% of your mail can be deleted.
- sublimemtb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It would be better if they would let you send more than 10mb at a time. and recieve more than 25mb
- whakojacko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In true google fashion, they should make it stop at 3.14GB.
- Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@30trip:
Actually, he was referencing what Google (you know, the creators of the damned thing) said the point was. The whole point of the 1 gig of space was so you would "never have to delete an email again".
Furthermore, we don't save all our email because we think its all important, we save it all because we have the space to do it and it's easier than "cleaning" your inbox. If I want to find an email I'm going to use search anyway, so there's no point in wasting my time cleaning it up. - TechCF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone knows if the paying customers will get an increase over time? I have 10GB now
- redwallhp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm using about 6mb in GMail. And i'm using 2mb/2gb of my Gmail For Your Domain space.
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why don't you set up a website for picture sharing w/ the family? or utilize stuff that's out there (which you can make private and password protected)? Ok, so it might cost a bit for something like smugsmug or flickr... but the presentation is far better than an email attachment.
Just curious as if it's an ease thing or what... I hated picture attachments because no one understands I don't need a full 7MP (or even 3MP for that matter) image to look at it in my email. This is why I like flickr... I can see the web version, and if I like it, I can order a print based on the full sized one. I have the majority of my cousins who take pictures doing this method.. it beats having to send anything we missed from the million shots we take.. heh. - superdoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*****
- rfunches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"How does everyone here manage to stay so low in their usage? [...] We send and receive on average 100 to 150 emails a day"
Well, that's your problem right there. There's a thing on the internets called instant messaging...I hear Google made it a part of the Gmail website.
Are you using email to make 1-2 sentence conversational replies, or are those 100-150 emails substantive? - SethHoyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"So, it's impossible for Google to change the counter rate?
Don't assume the speed rate of the counter is always the same, it varies A LOT."
This is my point exactly. The entire premise of this article is worthless, because the 3.47 GB figure is protracted 5 years out! The counter rate will certainly change before then, making this whole discussion moot. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nope, folders suck. And there isn't anything you can do with folders that you can't do with labels and stars, plus a whole bunch more.
