- pbol01, on 08/29/2008, -0/+25Ericsson more or less invented the mobile phone (along with Swedish and Danish universities and companies) . And have always made the best handsets on the market, and are still doing that. So I hope that Ericsson in someway will stay on the mobile phone market, with or without Sony.
- yessuz, on 08/29/2008, -2/+20sony Ericsson - they produce really really good phones!
- s0crates82, on 08/29/2008, -3/+17huh.
my w610i is the best phone i've ever owned, that is, besides the nokia 5xxx series brick i had back in 01. - crownedgriffin, on 08/29/2008, -2/+10Only a small part of that had anything to do with Ericsson.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 08/29/2008, -0/+7Well since Ericsson more or less singlehandedly constructed the worlds first national cellular phone network (And covered 5 countries with two networks in the seventies) I'm sure they will survive. They've gotten a lot of experience in producing well designed phones that people actually want from the cooperation with Sony. I'm sure they will survive as long as they dont try to go back to their old design philosophy. But I don't think they would ever do that. They are smart enough to know that that would be suicide.
- Nigran, on 08/29/2008, -0/+6Ericsson will still exist without Sony Ericsson, they are entirely different companies. Ericsson manufacture mobile platforms, used by many other companies such as NEC and LG. They also manufacture the network infrastructure used in GSM and UMTS-based networks and broadband equipment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ericsson - Stalks, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5Regarding your "refusal to connect". I live in the UK and the phone has the ability to connect to either a 3G or GSM. Twice a week I am unable to make calls, as if it had no signal, yet its showing 5/5 bars. I disable 3G and force GSM only, and its worked fine for 6 months.
- smacksaw, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Nice find Burento.
His praise for Apple...interesting. I think he's open to working with them. A Sony iPhone? A VAIO Mac? We know how much Sony hates Windows and Microsoft. You never know. I think that iPhone+Walkman could really combine the best of both.
Another thing I thought was interesting is how the iPod has killed the album. If I were a commercial musician, I would not be making albums. I would be cranking out 4-song EPs three or four times a year. If you think about it, you'd get a lot of single play, lots of exposure due to new releases, the chance to snag the customer for the extra 3 songs (especially a 4-for-3 deal), etc. The industry needs to adapt. - whosmatt, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Ericsson is in the infrastructure business. They started this joint venture with Sony in part because the consumer products division was doing poorly and they wanted out.
- arjtin, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2I really don't care as much about a company's history when buying something. Kodak had a successful history of film cameras, but you're an idiot if you buy one of their digitals.
- robszol, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3where's my damn xperia!!!?
- nicktx, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2I wish CDMA would die out sooner in USA, there's no reason to have it considering the whole world is using GSM. It only serves Verizon's and Sprint's interest in making the switch between carriers more difficult. Which played out against them because you can't use an iPhone on CDMA and that phone is currently the standard against which all other phones are measured.
- EatSleepJeep, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3Sony has said before their goal is to reduce a consumer's devices to just 3. A mobile device that is a phone, music player, video player, notebook, camera, camcorder & GPS. A home player which is a media center, gaming platform and computer. And a TV to show it on.
- matthewf01, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2Unfortunate bad news being reported by Engadget today, that it's delayed until end of year according to the reps at this event
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/29/sony-ericssons- ... - reckage, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3I've had my SE T637 for about 4 years and it still runs like a champ. I'm finally upgrading this weekend and I would buy an XPeria but who knows when they will come out - so an iPhone it is.
- NerveBand, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3You must have a really busted up k*00i, because my k800 is flawless, camera and all signal issues. Even roaming it works perfectlys so I don't know about you.
- Elranzer, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1I wish Sony would go back to making Clie handhelds. As expensive as they were, they actually made Palm OS devices better than most Windows PocketPC devices. And there was true innovation in them, which is rare for a Sony product. The only other company that came close was Handspring, and Palm's own "first-party" hardware always fell short.
If Sony winds up divorcing Ericsson, it would be awesome if they started making Clie smartphones. Also, it would be nice if Palm OS ever makes it to version 6. - BurtCokain, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Have you used Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) for your K800i? Mine used to do that occasionally, but after an online update (free), it has been trouble free.
Their last round of hardware sounds terrible though, with loads of people having trouble on forums with W890s failing and K850s (and apparently now C902s) having loads of lockups.
I've defected to Nokia - My 6210 is far more stable than any Sony I've seen recently. Shame Nokia can't have Sony's week long battery life. - sab0tage, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1I happen to hate my K800i. Not because it suffers from the joystick problem that my t610 and k750i had, no, indeed this problem is far worse...
Barely any of the keypad buttons work anymore without persistant persuasion. I hate my phone.
It makes me angry.
:( - amanoj, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Dugg for the use of Gaijin in a Digg Topic!
Japan = FTW!!! - reckage, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1I'm happy with 4 devices, and I'm fine with having a home player be a media center and gaming platform and DVR box, but I'll keep my computer seperate from all of that, thank you. Just make sure they all connect.
- andreusboy, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Thats the point exactly. The rest of the world with extravagant phones and CDMA companies stuck with the lesser crappier late to market offerings from Samsung, Audiovox, LG only to serve the parasitic interests of Verizon to screw you. And now surprise surprise everybody wants the ***** on their network.
Sony Ericsson division is targeted towards consumer devices (arguably one of the best at it) and Ericsson is in the equipment business (mediation, cell site & switch equipment) and my experience has been that with those kinds of equipment combination I get much better reception than other phones (at least on the local industry niche that I work on) so their separation might not be beneficial. - sl9sl9, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will un-do many years of crap phones, and climb to the very pinnacle of gadget porn and convergence in one fell swoop. If you haven't already seen the X1 and the insane amount of features it has, you should check it out. I can't wait.
- RoccoMcTaco, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Same here in the midwest. It's been running great for 2 years, though I had to replace the headphones because one side went out; I did use them all the time though.
- jo21, on 08/29/2008, -1/+1they are on red alert though loosing marketshare and profit.
- pbol01, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0(Ericsson and DanCall made the first practical devices, but you are right)
Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive is widely considered to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for handheld use in a non-vehicle setting. Using a modern, if somewhat heavy portable handset, Cooper made the first call on a handheld mobile phone on April 3, 1973.[49]
The first commercial citywide cellular network was launched in Japan by NTT in 1979. Fully automatic cellular networks were first introduced in the early to mid 1980s (the 1G generation). The Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system went online in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in 1981.[50] NMT was the first mobile phone system that enabled international use of the phone, or "roaming" on other networks in other countries. This was followed by a boom in mobile phone usage, particularly in Northern Europe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone - Suits, on 08/29/2008, -1/+1Man I wish Sony would jump to Sprint/CDMA. Even with the current offerings on the horizon (Samsung, HTC & Blackberrry phones) from Sprint - It's not a whole lot. Doing so would give Sprint customers some great options. I have always wanted a Sony phone for Sprint! :(
- pbol01, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0True but the company originate from Ericsson, they merged with Sony because they were no good at the "design"(how it looks) part. But they made the best phones and they still do more or less :D . And you also have to realize that because of Ericsson and DanCall(now closed), we have the high end segment of the mobile phone development industry here in northern Denmark and in southern Sweden. :D
Just another reason why I love Ericsson ;) - arjtin, on 08/29/2008, -1/+1I can't see why apple needs a walkman on an iphone when they all have a built in ipod.
- pbol01, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0I don't like that thought...
We all know that combo devices do a lot, but nothing well.
I like dedicated devices for home use, but then again i like a mobile phone with lots of features. So I'm pretty much the worst consumer.... - inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+1A Sony employee played the wii!!!
HOLY ***** WE MUST KILL THAT *****, HE IS A HERETIC
. . . . . .Heretic :D That was such a good game back in the day - BalancingAct, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0You're going to have to wait until October and possibly January for that heap. By the time it's released, it will be largely outdated because of the new devices being released from Nokia and Samsung.
It's also going to be the last mobile from SE running WM.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7601.html - JDaleS, on 11/18/2008, -0/+0really good phones!
http://www.acadapterz.com/
http://www.elbatteries.com/ - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -3/+2Exactly. SE Walkman phones are plaguing Latin America and other parts of the world. Buried as lame.
- ilieff, on 08/29/2008, -5/+3Finally! All these Sony Ericsson phones sucks. I know that, because I work as phone technician. I hope that we will see again Sony phones and Ericsson phones.
- BalancingAct, on 08/29/2008, -2/+0There is no doubt that Ericssons are up there with Motorola and Siemens as the most inventive of all manufacturers, but it was Motorola who invented the mobile phone and most of the form factors seen today. Ericssons, along with Motorola and Siemens laid the foundation for all mobiles, , but they had nothing to do with the invention of the mobile phone
- memsom, on 08/29/2008, -5/+2A year ago I would have been upset, but my K800i is pretty unreliable (it'll randomly refuses to connect to any cell towers - even thought here is a signal. It'll then need to be rebooted.) I also know countless people with K850i's that have had the blue ring of death. One guy had his phone replaced 3 or 4 times before he insisted on a different model (in the UK you tend to get insurance thrown in on your contract and the providers are pretty good at replacing defective hardware, especially if you threaten to leave them.)
- snowblind113, on 08/29/2008, -5/+1the the
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -11/+5"who needs blu-ray"?
the answer should have been: NO ONE.
man - who cares about high-def movies? practically all movies suck. why do i want to watch a sucky movie in high def? guess what? i dont.
sony - get smart, and start building free energy devices before anyone else and capture the market up front. put your PS3 and blu-ray and .. wait thats all you have... TO REST. cell phones will be illegal as soon as the cancer clusters start popping up all over the world because of the microwave radiation produced by them and their accompanying satellites.
good interview otherwise. - StolenLamp, on 08/29/2008, -8/+1Lame.
- MichaelY, on 08/29/2008, -12/+4I don't know about this, but I found 50cents in the keyboard! (Whoo hoo!)
