- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Not cool man, has nothing to do with third world, just one more excuse for you to get your racism rage out.
This can happen anywere, because as we all know, idiots are everywere.. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This type of thing happens to all types of aircraft when there misloaded or under fueled and being loaded.
Flying Tigers tranport and FedEx both use braces which they put on the ground to hold up the tail of the plane during some of there loading operations.
I've seen small aircraft do this in real life.
A single engine beachcraft was filled will golfers and there clubs.
They had just landed at the airport and the guy taxied the plane up to the pumps to refuel it.
Where I was parked and had just finished fueling my plane.
He opened his door and jumped off the wing the beachcraft tiled back and hit the ground with it's tail.
The weight and balance was so far aft it was was amazing he didn't crash while he was trying to land.
I'm sure that he must of had some control troubles durning the his flight. - dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's good to have an off-topic, but interesting post once in a while, but I've having the same feeling as you.

next digg story "snake regurgitates a plane" (video), now that would be interesting! - JasonHilton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow...
As a pilot, this goes to show, Weight and Ballance checks are very important, especially on commercial planes.
If that happened in-flight, the results would have been disastrous. - captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A plane can be incorrectly loaded while flying because the fuel accounts for a significant portion of the airplane's weight. As the fuel burns, the aircraft's center of gravity moves. This is why it's important to do your weight and balance figures for both takeoff and landing.
It's also possible for an aircraft to become incorrectly loaded while airborne if its cargo moves. There was a trivia question about this in an issue of AOPA Pilot a while back, something about an airplane carrying goats. - loganz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5this happens a lot of times.. it never happened while i was working at a cargo service, but if you dont check your weight and unload the fwd hold while the back is heavy.. that causes trouble..
- Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@olliholliday
20 people say average weight of 150lb is 3,000lbs. If everyone is on one side thats probably enough to throw the trim off and make landing more difficult. - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5'Xenophobic' might be the term you're after.
- zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder how badly damaged the plane is.
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I know they're having big money problems. Chances of him losing that job are pretty high which isn't good.
- tm8747a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The funny thing is that while the text refers to Varig's bankrupcy, the picture shows a VarigLog plane, which is actually a separate entity. VarigLog is apparently going to buy Varig, according to recent news.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, stop complaining!
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7My dad works for Varig
=D - tm8747a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If you honestly think Brazil is a 3rd world country, you clearly have no authority with which to speak."
uh, actually, it is. And I'm from there, before you start wondering from what authority I say so... - Daychilde, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Only if you farking intolerant idiots stfu first.
It used to be cool to make fun of people because of their race or ethnicity. Just because society hasn't caught up on the issue of size doesn't mean it's okay to be an ass.
My personal goal is to only be intolerant of intolerance. Please consider trying for the same, would you? It would make the world a better place.
Either that, or stop wasting our precious oxygen. ;-) - MyNameIsFred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"...It used to be cool to make fun of people because of their race or ethnicity..."
[joke] I remember those long ago days when white males were portrayed as a bumbling, idiotic dads on TV. Thankfully that sterotype went away. [/joke] - olliholliday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4how could a plane be incorrectly loaded while flying?
afaik they can only refuel them mid-air at the moment.
as a sidenote, i went to switzerland recently on a big-ish plane, like a 767 or smt, there were about 20 people on it total and they made 10 sit at the front and 10 at the back but only for take off and landing. I'm really dubious that that few people made any difference whatsoever, but i guess i'm glad the pilot's diligent enough to make sure. - zombiedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"how could an airplane be incorrectly loaded while flying?"
It would be called load shift. Very dangerous thing to have happen in a cargo plane (to have the cargo get loose and shift around).
For those interested, the center of gravity of a plane is expressed in percentage of the mean aerodynamic chord, or average cross section of the wing. Most planes are usually balanced around 35% MAC, or a CG 1/3 back from the front of the wing. In big transport planes being outside the envelope usually happens with a very light load of people at one end (everybody wants to sit up front) or if there is a full flight with no luggage. In this photo, they most likely were unloading from front to rear and didn't use the tail stand or pay attention to procedure. This kind of screw up stresses the pressure vessel and causes a whole lot of $$$ damage. - DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As much as I agree that being completely intolerant is a bad thing, I also think being completely tolerant is also a bad thing.
Ignoring our problems doesn't help solve them. - NINJ4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would love it if there was a video of the nose slowly raising into the air, because I'm sure it just doesn't go flying into the air.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's fuccking hilarious
- yorxs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Racism huh? I did not realize 3rd world countries were a race. Sounds like you are a race baiter to me. Anyhow it just seems to me that 3rd world countries have more than their share of airplane disasters etc, so I avoid them.
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone's getting a big maintenance bill this month
- olliholliday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah ok fair enough,
tbh i'd assumed that they'd take fuels from the individual tanks in a clever sequence to keep it balanced.
the goats thing sounds like a good pub story tho :)
thanks
@darthmatt
yeah this was front to back balancing though, everybody's given seat numbers were to fill the first few rows but they made some move right to the back - KampfGherkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to work in "Weight & Balance" as a Load Controller for a German airline once.
First off: it's a CARGO flight. There are NO passengers on cargo flights. And not only that, it doesn't matter if you're a fat or a thin passenger in terms of W&B. Load control assumes an average weight for all passengers that has been established as an aggregate over decades of air travel and is regularly remeasured and updated. Check-in might give you ***** for your bag weight and ask you to pay up, but for us loadcontrollers - we couldn't care less!
As an example, the airline I worked for measured men for longhaul flights at 84 Kg, while women were 76 Kg and children were 34 Kg. These are called standard weights. You do get "actual weights", but this only refers to baggage. Here check-in aggregates an average bag weight on the actual checked-in weight of the bags. Passengers are always "standard weight". Again these weights are different for short haul flights and or different routes and other airlines in general. (Apparently in recent years these weights have been adjusted upwards due to trends in general obesity of people around the globe.)
For cargo though, It's only two or three crew and loads and loads of cargo. That's either a Boing 753 or 752 (757-300 or 757-200 respectively in W&B speak) in the picture. There's easily 40-50 tons of cargo on that plane and another 10-20 tons of fuel or so.
That's just to get a few misconceptions out of the way. I can see most of those misconceptions are from pilots. hehe, well you guys just keep on *cough* flying your big busses and us W&B guys will keep making sure you're loaded up to go. :)
As an afterthough as has been said. Loadmaster probably unloaded the front compartment first with cargo still in the back. Stupid mistake but can happen for a number of reasons. The problem could even have been with incorrect planning by W&B. There is enough paper trail in all this to find out where the error does in fact lie. Someone's either gonna get a slap on the wrist or a formal disciplinary hearing (ouch). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you think that this is just a matter of box stacking, then probably you'd accomplish the same feit with the plane.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you honestly think Brazil is a 3rd world country, you clearly have no authority with which to speak.
- artnez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh no... hahaha
- CaptainSpeaking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Do you think he'll hold the job for another week? The way things are going with Varig...

- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0olliholliday:
The Concorde did something like that, actually. It had a system of pumps and whatnot whereby it could move fuel around from one tank to another in order to balance the airplane. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Is there a term for someone who is not rascist but is prejudiced against certain nations? Anyone?"
Yes. Fascist. - jet3004, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Totally honest question in regards to Linkage155 's rebuttal...
Is there a term for someone who is not rascist but is prejudiced against certain nations? Anyone? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah wheelie!
- ollien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ha ha, someone is going to have a hard time taking the blame for that! I wonder if it was slow or fast... and if anyone was up the front of the plane... that would freak somebody out if they didn't know what was happening!
- NiteTrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1how many kinds are there?
- mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No, Xenophobia is fear of ALL that is foreign, not just specific contries.
It's a good word for that "The Emporer's Cat Is..." game. - Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Ha! -- Best related comment i've seen in days :D
- sandrat44, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Agreed... I used to be able to count on finding good tech/science related material, but if this trend continues, digg will be, no more!
Didn't I read Digg was going to offer some social issues digg site? I think it was in Wired or Business 2.0 - domokunt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3i remember climbing all the way dont the tail of a lil cessna once and then thinking...... yeah i forgot to do something ****
- ProphetSix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2OK, this is "technology news" how??? This isn't even news. Just a link to a single photo.
No digg. Reported as "LAME!" - Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2What kind of retard cant stack boxes on both ends of a plane?
