- Gundam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Thats nothing, CNN hot linked TribalWar so the TW admin switched the image to goatse and a message telling CNN to ***** off, its estimated 300,000 people saw the image before CNN fixed it. Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribalwar TW's hall of fame article retelling it: http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186690

I want my click and 30 seconds back. - McBradd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Uh, isn't it kinda obvious?
You change the file to something else, but keep the exact same name/locaiton... - theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9My friend hotlinked the original picture of limecat on a forum he was really active in. When the owner realized alot of his traffic was from hotlink loading, he replaced the picture with a picture of tubgirl and changed the name of the actual picture on his website. My friend was promptly banned from the forum.
- TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9A bunch of myspace pukes decided to hotlink my image gallery. Rather than change file names and such, I used htaccess to re route all their requests to a nice big black and white flashing GIF. Want to see [don't click if you are prone to epilepsy]? http://www.maxpower.ca/g1/stophotlink.gif
- mjaleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Its a really funny thing to do but he just wasn't immature enough for me... Heh.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13"Holy *****! How'd you come up with all that, mikesty?"
Notice that google link at the top of his post? Google's this thing that helps you find things on the internets. You should try it.

Dumbass. - Aurarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm so glad I didn't press 'digg it'
- lamuella, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6One website I go to turns every hotlinked image into hello.jpg from goatse.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's a great story. Really hard to believe the CNN guys would either be too lazy or just have a mental lapse on that one. There's no excuse though, because CNN must be using akamai-level services.
- stuntpope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One time some skinhead jerkoff used an image on one of my sites as his avatar on some white supremacist message forum. It took two seconds to find a gay pr0n pic of a white guy getting boned up the butt by a not-so-white dude via google images and that became his avatar across the entire board.
Looked good on him. - maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7bury plz
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem isn't showing the picture, its showing the picture and not saying where its from. They just set up the picture as a background or whatever, they didn't set up the picture and say this picture wasn't made by me, visit this guy's site and give him credit.
- Bleu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember that there was an awesome one somewhere that had alot of these.
There only one I remember was there was a hotlinked image on a forum post for cold remedies, and someone put a hotlink for "***** Soup", and the guy replaced it with 20+ old, naked, gay guys in a pool. I lost the link though.... :( - MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was actually thinking of making a hotlinking script that would make the usual "This image has been hotlinked" or something that nature, and then use GD to generate a tiny thumbnail of the actual image, that way people can at least see, somewhat, what the image is.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Probably courtesy of some twit doing a little drag-n-drop in their non-text "HTML Editor"
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The problem isn't showing the picture, its showing the picture and not saying where its from."
Showing the picture can be a problem regardless of giving credit. I only pay for 3GB per month of bandwidth. If someone hotlinks one of my large images on a very popular site I could be in some trouble. - Strahd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like how this guy dealt with a french writer on ZDNet...he replaced the stolen image with a pic of the author in leather straps, lol...

http://digg.com/links/Why_did_this_ZdNet_Writer_choose_to_leach_from_me_ - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I still havent found what i'm looking for. I want one that reports to me that the image is being hotlinked, and then i can pick what image to replace it with... I don't know how to code asp, (which is what these scripts use, right?) so I can't make on on my own.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My friend runs an image board (using the same software 4chan uses). He had a blast on April Fool's. =)
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"i wonder how he does it..he replaces the image with another one with the same name on his server. you must be new to the computer...."
It's quite easy. Rename your image to something else. Change the image linking on YOUR website to suit the image. Insert another image file with the same name as the first.
That's just one of the few methods of doing this. - lippyjka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just searched the net for tubgirl, found it on wikipedia!! EEEWWW!!!! lol
- uzusan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is a screenshot, look on page 9, post 164.
EDIT- Page 9 of the tribalwar link above that is - Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My anti-hotlink pic is 4kb in size. It gives my site's URL and says that the content that the viewer is looking for is found there. That's pretty much free advertisement for me.
Switching the pics on a hotlinker may be fun, but free advertisement seems more practical. You may as well get something out of the bandwidth used. - Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm looking how to create the same thing that ninjapirate has in his first picture in the related link above. what site is linking to you and how many times its done so... again i'm a newb with coding of most types but happy to learn so if anyone can point me to a site or google search term...
- rhizome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lawyers on digg...now there's a good one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3fun with goatse? what? :P
- pwrstick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Excellent.
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3LOOOL
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He should have replaced all the images with tubgirl.
Imagine that german site with a tiled tubgirl background... hahahahha - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2See also: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2005/01/11/ for advice on how to handle hot linking. You can find an email address to send a warning to using: http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2006/01/23/
However, quite some big sites, like MySpace are clueless. And others want you to file an official DMCA complaint. Crazy that someone stealing your bandwidth and the right on your images has an easier time then you, who made the original pictures. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think thats really true though, because for one, they don't have a single screenshot. Also, Cnn watermarks all their images with whomever took it (like the AP in teh right hand corners)...
- TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My image, my domain. The irony level would be off the charts if someone hotlinked on a hotlinking complaint story here on digg don't you think? Anyway, consider the image free, use it as you wish. Its very small so it won't hurt bandwidth, yet the size is very big -- perfect for big results.
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4“Lame; The guy doens’t even tell the reader how he does it. No digg.”
This is without a doubt the dumbest comment I have ever seen on Digg....and I’ve seen some ridiculously moronic comments here. - TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see anything there.
- Oakes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Tensenki,
If copying images onto your own server was copyright infringement, Google (and every other search engine) would be out of business. - pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Before you start showing goatse to everyone with "wrong" referrer field, note that it's not required field, many browsers and proxies can block it, and some retarded firewalls/AV can change it to something bogus (i.e. their ad) - all of these technically seem like hotlinking (to unsophisticated scripts, at least).
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2YOU'RE GAY!
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2whoa? maddox ripoff? Interesting.
- Travelsonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, though "stealing the right" does not make a lick of sense, does he now have his left only?

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1man i got so excited...i first read the title as 'fun with hookers' ...
- andre75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL. Thanks all. Wouldn't have known my little article would stirr up so much interest.
I will take all your comments under advice for my next issue.
Considering it will be on myspace users, I think I can be more creative (nasty). I hate those guys. - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1P.S. See it in 'action': http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=7997092 (Comments section)
