- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -18/+102"I love how this community goes from:
"OMFG!!! M$$$ $UCK$!!!!!!!!"
to
"THANK YOU MS! FREE DOMAINS!""
Yeah, it's almost as though it was a community made up of two or more individuals, each with their own seperate opinions or something... - feucht, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56I prefer to think of it as two hobos fighting over something neither of them wants...
- nene7070, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28its not a "loophole"... they say this outright in the FAQ (or they did last time i read it)
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25What, you couldn't link to the actual page, but instead to a page that simply links to the real page?
- piecutter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Real link:
http://calvin.lplug.org/pipermail/lplug/2006-April/000116.html - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I got a free domain too. It's not a loop hole it's a feature and the reason why I signed up. However what the article is saying is he was able to move the domain to another host which the Office Live interface doesn't allow you to do.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's two hobos fighting over cheese. But it's really just a hologram to disguise my crime fighting vehicle.
- IsoJanis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If you had read the linked page, you'd know he didn't call Australia but instead a contact in San Fransisco.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If it says Visa on it it has to work. That's part of the agreement with Visa. Accepted anywhere Visa is.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This guy registered a domain for his new "business" and can't even spell words like the ("teh") and that ("taht")?
I just have a feeling he is going to be a massive failure. - shinaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's newsforge.. owned by the same people as Sourceforce and Slashdot, it's not a blog.
- skwashd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I am now the proud new owner of officelivesux.com :)
- nailPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11No digg, I hate links to blogs with links to news.
- ctoph0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is a free monthly subscription for this Microsoft Office Live beta offer. This offer will end if you cancel your subscription or when the beta concludes, at which time you will have the option to continue with Office Live through a free or fee-based subscription.
- naisanza, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Why have to pay anything (even if its a little) when you can get it Completely Free?
Expenses will built up over time. Why not start cutting it back now? - naisanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3people said its inaccurate? probably its the whole "loophole" part. i think its just a bad title. probably didnt think about it before submitting.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's free during beta. when the beta ends, they'll demand money. if you don't pay, they'll keep the domain. i would definitely recommend against signing up with a domain you really want, because microsoft will keep it.
- egghead152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nothing is free.
- ep0niks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3US only.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7This is a non-boot camp related article. Please refrain from submiting this for the next couple of months!
- charmedguy18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I could've told you that.
- arnar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Has anyone else tried this, i.e. contacting those Melbourne guys and moving the domain?
- masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And what do you use to pay for it on GoDaddy? Magic ***** beans???
- stragee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeap SP33DFR34K is correct - They require you to put in your credit card number for that beta - I was going to join this beta a long time ago but chose not to. Who the hell asks for a Credit Card to join a beta?!! They say its "just in case you decide to take advantage of our services beyond the beta" Yeah right! More like turn beta testers into unsuspecting clients hah!
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's funny that every bit of news doesn't effect everyone everywhere. Yeah. No Digg! We want only world news!
-_- - microdude431, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got an invite to office, but you have to have a Credit Card to verify your real identity and to claim the domain.
- PantherX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you can't afford the $8 for a domain, you can't afford hosting either. Cheap pricks.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, ms (like they should...) wants a security code.
so need one of those. - h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Domains are actually only $5 these days. But that's not the point.
The point is that Office Live is a great service and getting a free domain is a plus. I just got a .net tld for my original .com. It's free, and I plan to use it.
Stop whinning if you don't have a credit card or are outside the US, because if you are only interested in the domain... you are outta luck. You cannot change anything on the domain, it will always point OfficeLive's login screen.
In a way, you are actually locking your domain with MSFT. So if it's something you really want, just buy it. - mercuryswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From Microsoft's Live Basics FAQ:
"Q: Are my credit card information and password safe?
A: When highly confidential information (such as a credit card number or password) is transmitted over the Internet, Microsoft protects it through the use of encryption, such as the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol. Encryption is the process of encoding data to prevent unauthorized access, especially during transmission. Encryption is usually based on one or more keys, or codes, that are essential for decoding, or returning the data to readable form."
I love how they answer the question in a totally different context than I expected. - spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shinaku is correct - it's not a blog.
HOWEVER, I agree that source content should be linked to. I think it would be good to prohibit slashdot/gizmodo/newsforge/etc. links as articles, which would (hopefully) force people to link to source content directly. - digitaldater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After a month if you do not cancel the account you are billed. You have to sign up with a CC to get your domain. Typical.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg. There's no way to edit HTML that I can see, and their templates are crappy. It's like Google Pages all over again...except cancelling is much more difficult.
- mikegifford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm always leary about these things. I used one of those loopholes to get a free @msn.com email, then i added all my friends to that account in my msn. The thing is it won't let you use outlook to download your email.
- masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I understand it from the page, the basic service is free as in beer, even after beta. So no you won't be billed after a month - only if you sign up for the ones that explicitly tell you $29.95 a month (or whatever)...
- jmuchrisf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I emailed. Waiting for a response.
I'm lazy. I figure they are swamped with phone calls now. - pbjohnson79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bah..canceled my account, which took 2 emails and a gigantic headache. Karyyk is right, you can't upload folders/files, just work on a tiny ass GUI like googlepages. I think i'll stick with googlepages for now and get a nice domain from godaddy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3From the post:
"I had already printed out the legal documents and everything I agreed too and went through it with a fine comb pen."
What the hell is a "fine comb pen"? No part of those three words or any combination thereof makes ANY sense. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OMG Guys! Did you know this requires a credit card, because if you read the comments its only been mentioned 50 times, just so you know.
PS. This beta requires a CC# - acedanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just signed up and tried calling the Melbourne IT in Emeryville CA 94608. The mailbox is full. If I want technical support, I'm supposed to go to the website. If I want someone to help me, I'm supposed to call Australia. Anybody got a phone card I can borrow?
- click81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or Microsoft (Micrsofot) for that matter.
- starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"what do you mean? you cant cancel it? isnt it against the law to bind you to a contract against your will?
or something like that.
what was so bad giving it a try?"
there are links all over the place stating Cancel my Subscription. One link brings you to a page that says to contact X and that link brings you to a page that says contact Y (the original page).
Nothing so bad in giving it a try. I did what I always do. rush in and find out what it is later. I am a mac guy (with windows at work) so it's not really what I was looking for. Thought it may be worth doing in Virtual PC, but not what I was looking for. Basically PowerPoint on the web.
And not even sure I would cancel now, but to not be able to makes me angry.... - Guder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can buy a domain for MUCH cheaper. In fact a number of hosters offer them for free. 1and1.com will give you a .info domain for free. With cheesy ass web page builder access (they hope you upgrade to one of their other plans. Though to be truthful, none of it is very expenisve.
Dreamhost will give you a domain as long as you take a hosting package. - Nivla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not fruad if you do it willingly. I let my younger siblings use my CC's all the time. Heck I even let one of my friends use it so he could get one of these domains registered.
- skwashd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I rang Melbourne IT, and its not as easy as the LPLUG post made out. You have to go through support.officelive.com I jumped through that hoop and now finally I got an email back from M$. Doesn't look good.
The above information will help us verify your account and provide you with the domain registration key. Please note that it will only allow the access of the DNS information of your domain at http://whois.melbourneit.com and will not allow changing it. The DNS information of your domain is also available at the following websites:
1. http://www.whois.net
2. http://www.networksolutions.com/whois
I will wait and see what happens next. - sphinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1goddamnit!!! That is the biggest load of ***** ever!!! I rushed into it, and really shouldnt have.....as said before its one huge headache cancelling the thing. I want my domain unregistered so i can get it thru a LEGIT company.
- chillingdk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He he...even Non-Us citizens can use it too with few tweaks. But damn...this needs a cc number.
- jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need a credit card to signup though
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Supply cc#, download software, call someone. *****. Just spend $9 and get one on godaddy without all the bull.
