- personman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wake me up when this content is available as a video podcast I can watch on my iPod.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0btw sorry that sounded malicous.
- Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very usefull
- nmber3pencil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dupe, but amazing stuff for those of us who didn't get the last memo.
- fsamdude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0So their linear algebra course goes at an impressively fast place (neglecting proofs mind you). Their algorithms course is rather slow though in comparison.
- agimat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1useful stuff for people who missed it. nvm if it was duped.
dugg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thought I might let all you clueless Real Player haters in on why Georgia Tech chose Real (and quite possibly why MIT did as well). Once the movie is completed and produced as the final *.ram/rm file, it becomes near impossible to break apart, add something to it, and then re-encode it back into *.ram. This is a security issue. Bandwidth at Tech is not a problem; since everyone is on the campus network with 100Mbit connections, they could stream us HD video (without the CPU intensive codecs) and there wouldn't be an issue.
- wattsei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Are there any inherent benefits to using RM files? I don't know about everyone else but I avoid them like the plague.
- ocschwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As an MITer, I can answer the question: the faculty and students show very little interest in a project if it doesn't involve creating new technology. If the Open Course Ware project required writing the world's first video codec suitable for this task, the people would be found, and it would be done well. But when the project involves tech that already exists, you don't find many cluefull people who have the time to go to the right meetings and say "don't use RealPlay, use [whatever]." Time and motivation are both scarce when it comes to attending meetings with administrators.

And you can save them to your hard drive using a download manager. I use Flashget. - Hutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obviously they opted to use an extension affiliated with RealPlayer to save bandwidth..
- Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it possible to save streaming lectures to a hard drive?
- dtmfdan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its a great way to save bandwidth, most people won't even go near a RM file.
a way to get around it though is Real Alternative
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm - wirjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Media Player Classic to play them with the real codecs.
- pplant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Real player sucks, I admit... but I watched the 1st Linear Algebra course after taking it 10 years ago and I have to admit that IF I had gone to MIT I might have only taken Linear Algebra once!!
- icu_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not new of course - obviously those in charge of the MIT net are not alumni ;).

I vowed never to install that piece of crapware ever again, but I keep breaking that promise every time!!! - dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0old news no digg
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1DUPE.
http://digg.com/technology/FREE_Online_Geek_Courses_ - mooseman089, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0EWWW why do they have them in real RM files?
- Asazuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Screw that. Way to much work to want to install RealPlayer
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"EWWW why do they have them in real RM files?"
you would think faculty and students would know better - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Stop posting old news!
- Conor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0they link to different things though
- wirjo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0To save bandwith I guess.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0so digg the original, not the dupe.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0MIT is nothing special. Let's stop pretending like MIT produces gods, shall we?
