- artfuldodga, on 09/23/2008, -11/+314Yeah, great for the US, but this is the internet and it would be nice if the big networks treated it as such. I don't want to use workarounds just to watch my favorite TV show or movie online, copyright law already states by doing so I'm breaking the law. When and if Hulu opens up to the world is when I'll be down with the service
- hawksfan03, on 09/23/2008, -4/+254In addition to Hulu most of the major networks offer their shows online as well. I find myself watching less and less TV when it is scheduled on. It is more convenient to watch shows when I have time.
- Mark2600, on 09/23/2008, -2/+194Adapt or die.
I use Hulu out of principle, I LOVE the fact that the TV & Movie associations looked at pirating of their product and said "How can we make money off of this?". I stopped using the other services, (TV-Links, SurfTheChannel, etc) and watch Hulu, provided they have my shows. The other industries, and you know who they are, just wanted to be the proverbial bully, stand firm in their ways, shoult "NO!", stomp their feet, and hope that we listen, while we evolved into the technological culture that we are today.
So, hell, I'll sit through the 15 second ads, the movie trailers, and the banners, but I'll support them because they supported us. - str3ama, on 09/23/2008, -4/+157Hulu's a godsend, I mean it marks the first sensible move made by TV Networks and Movie executives. If they can find a way to ease the networks and producers into realizing that they could profit even more by expanding the audience to all of North America, Europe, and Asia. Right now its limited to only the US which is great for all of us who can use it, but they're leaving out a huge demographic that could really be profitable. I mean I don't know why they don't let Canadians or Britain access the videos - those are two nations that are pretty much very accessible to these network and movie producers - I assume they watch and get the same shows and movies as us at least.
Anyways Hulu is worth the visit, but I find myself relying on a few other sites to fill the void of what they don't have:
- http://www.tvshack.net - great for collections of full tv show links. It's not the best site, but it's the most reliable since Stage6 closed.
- http://www.freetube.us.tc - a web app with live streaming tv channels, there's a good mix but there's mostly some oddball stuff and smaller channels. But there is some gold in there with the crap, it's really good for news and music and err porn
- http://www.tvuplayer.com - good tv streaming app, but it has adware so watch out for that. It's pretty good when you're at home, mainly use it for sports.
- http://www.thepiratebay.com - you can't forget about the piratebay, yea it's outright illegal but who cares. HD versions of shows, no ads, relatively fast, and just about any tv show or movie you're looking for. Of course it's torrents/p2p so you have to watch out for your ISP which in many cases could be throttling down your connection when they detect torrent traffic..arggh - JunkStar2k, on 09/23/2008, -3/+95Just make it available outside the us please
- BlaqReaper, on 09/23/2008, -1/+91Hulu has all three seasons of Arrested Development on it. Nuff said.
Also, the origin of it's name is interesting, considering I'm Chinese and never thought of it as a Chinese word. Good read overall. - frepnog, on 09/23/2008, -2/+62except that Hulu tends to push older episodes off in favor of new ones.
six episodes of family guy?
really? that's it???? i like the site, but come ON. - inactive, on 09/23/2008, -1/+55But Tivo costs money. Watching them online costs nothing, save your internet bill which you would be paying anyway.
- farplaner, on 09/23/2008, -1/+46It would be awesome if it integrates directly on a PS3 or XBOX360.
- Kenny87, on 09/23/2008, -5/+43A great example of how going online is obviously the way ahead for so many different things- especially TV. Together with Skype, it makes it clear that telecommunications networks HAVE to adapt and change or they'll be ousted by the little guys who see the future and take advantage of it. I, for one, just got into Hulu and now watch more shows and am interested in more series than before when I just watched regular TV. I argue that there's a way to profit from the increased interest and accessibility that goes beyond ads; I'm interested to see what guys like Kilar come up with... There's too much crap to put up with on regular television too: shows I'm not interested in, commercials, inconvenient show times, etc.
Hulu = exciting. - kaniz, on 09/23/2008, -0/+34Once Networks let Hulu open things up to markets outside of the USA - let me know. Great concept/service, but not being able to view anything because I'm in Canada = suck.
- Snakedal337, on 09/23/2008, -14/+48Yeah a little company called Tivo built their whole business around that concept...
- SteveMTyler, on 09/23/2008, -4/+33""The world has turned completely upside down," Kilar says,"
No. youtube works here in Canada. - JYoungest1, on 09/23/2008, -0/+29For you, who obviously doesn't know. Hulu (FTA) is hosting all the shows you just mentioned with less commercials.
- gmacnay, on 09/23/2008, -2/+31GReat site, can't view the content from Canada although. :-(
- duker555, on 09/23/2008, -0/+2815 min of show then a 15-30sec commercial break. Can't get much better than that while still being legal.
HULU has become my favorite place to watch tv and movies. I also like that it puts up older shows that I never checked out before.
The Pretender for one. Great show and i'm glad Hulu offered it. - geekboy88, on 09/23/2008, -1/+28The biggest problem with Hulu is that it is available only in US, but that doesn't matter to me now, since I have found new alternatives.
- TheMightyDane, on 09/23/2008, -2/+29This would be awesome if it would just work worldwide !
- Bromskloss, on 09/23/2008, -0/+26Gah, United States only! :-( Strike better deals!
- jer21, on 09/23/2008, -0/+24I don't want to say that Joost sucks, because the idea is great, but the lack of quality programming on it makes it pretty useless.
- modsuperstar, on 09/23/2008, -1/+24Not available in Canada, so it's worthless to me. I've poked around the site and the interface and presentation is nice. I just don't get why there is so much red tape involved with showing things internationally. If they actually geotargetted the ads then the local syndication outlets could get their cut too.
- strictnein, on 09/23/2008, -0/+20Seems like TBS has just become Family Guy TV
- Darkaged, on 09/23/2008, -1/+20Thing is, The British public pay for BBC shows. You don't pay for shows on Hulu.
- protogenxl, on 09/23/2008, -1/+20What they need to do is add Buffering to their player.
- Yimyack, on 09/23/2008, -1/+20Now if only the RIAA figured this out & got behind Pandora.
Phuckin' RIAA... - swanny89, on 09/23/2008, -2/+20I have a feeling that the networks would love to charge more for the online advertising by opening up the service to a worldwide audience. After all, they would get more money from advertisers without incurring too much more overhead. I think the problem is they have existing contracts with international broadcasters and advertisers that they would be infringing upon by putting them online.
- VicRomano, on 09/23/2008, -3/+21Its the same thing all over. I can't watch any BBC broadcasts cause I don't live in the UK and I don't pay a TV license. I have to acquire my Top Gear from other sources.
- then00b, on 09/23/2008, -2/+19You're an idiot.
There I said it. - zip000, on 09/23/2008, -0/+17Hulu has significantly decreased the amount of shows that I download via torrents. I just like the idea of 1) Getting my content without breaking the law, and 2) getting my content in such a way that people can tell that these shows are being watched...i.e. better ratings so the shows will stick around.
Notice how "Arrested Development" is always on the list of popular shows. - Elranzer, on 09/23/2008, -1/+15"Imagine turning on the TV during prime time and only finding 70's style documentaries and boring news shows. "
Wait... are you describing BBC or NBC?? - Chirp08, on 09/23/2008, -0/+13Yeah I actually do not mind the ads, some are a bit longer some are like 5 seconds, you know when they are coming so you can get some food or run to the bathroom. I usually have a tab open with another site for when the ads come up anyway.
I just started watching Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but it's obviously not on often or conveniently, with Hulu I managed to watch 1/3 of the episodes this weekend which is awesome. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 09/23/2008, -0/+13Shows are on Hulu the day after they air. I watch the latest Daily Show on Hulu all the time.
- strictnein, on 09/23/2008, -0/+12True, but Canada is now in the southern hemisphere, so Kilar is correct.
- digitalpencil, on 09/23/2008, -1/+13"Imagine turning on the TV during prime time and only finding 70's style documentaries and boring news shows. "
Not familiar with the BBC are we.. - hmahadik, on 09/23/2008, -0/+12Doctor Who?
- Watley, on 09/23/2008, -0/+12Actually you can. There is a third party software called PlayOn that creates a media server on your computer and allows for streaming to the PS3 or XBox. Right now its still in beta and can be a little buggy. But its worth checking out. http://www.themediamall.com/playon
- mikeabundo, on 09/23/2008, -0/+12Until Hulu streams outside the US, it's worthless to me.
- MacParrot, on 09/23/2008, -4/+15Make it a free subscriber based downloadable service. Include those ads that pay for the service and put subscriber information into the meta data so it can't easily be torrented. Use standard video codecs that most portable players can use.
I really don't mind the ads. I understand that this stuff has to be paid for in some way and I don't want to upload it without the commercials so every person can watch it without the ads. I just want to be able to watch the shows that my schedule doesn't permit me to watch on my iPod (or whatever your preferred portable is).
The world is changing and many people don't have the time to commit to even 1/2 hour or hour each week when the show is scheduled to air. DVRs are great and for those that prefer that, more power to you, but when I actually have a little time I just want to catch up on the programs I like and sometimes don't need it to be on a 40-inch HDTV. - russ3, on 09/23/2008, -0/+11Like they said there are issues with tv deals, and family guy is incredibly syndicated.
- thelastcivilian, on 09/23/2008, -0/+11The ones who should be worried should be the cable companies. Two of my friends have cancelled their cable after I showed them Hulu (they were just watching Daily Show, The Office, etc.)...
I'm thinking about doing the same - unfortunately the streaming quality of live sporting events (not on Hulu, but elsewhere) leaves much to be desired... - DannyDriffs, on 09/23/2008, -1/+11Probably the only DVD's worth owning actually.
- gdrawlinson, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10Burried for lack of international access.
I can watch American TV with the same shows in Canada but then I can't watch them online? why? - Taedirk, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10This is what's been keeping me from taking Hulu seriously. When the second season of Terminator (or Summer Glau Beats Up Everybody) started up, I wanted to watch s1. Hulu had the entire first season up... but was in the process of taking everything down. I managed to watch the first episode and by the time I got around to trying to watch the next, it was already down.
If you want to provide content, provide content. Keep providing content. Removing content is what drives me and everybody else to torrents where we can get content whenever the hell we want. - Flooded, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10Yes. I use Hulu on a regular basis with Ubuntu 8.04.
- DigitalBrian, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9Well there is one big stinker about Hulu, most of the programming is only available for people within the USA.
- lamiaconfitor, on 09/23/2008, -0/+9There is an advantage to watching the Daily Show/Colbert Report on Hulu, it is in full screen, and the Daily Show still sees ad revenues. It sure beats the hell of trying to watch the tiny little flash box on my 22 inch wide screen monitor. Oh, and if you internet is fast enough... 480 dpi. w00t
- PawFox, on 09/23/2008, -1/+10but you have to live in the UK to watch though it..
- 0xception, on 09/23/2008, -1/+9How about use your computer for both? .. .just a thought,
Personally i have mythTV setup on a small crappy computer next to my TV, streaming network shared content (Anime, Movies, TvShows, etc) from my other computers to my TV... This way i can watch what i want when i want. i dont worry about recordings or paying for TV from the Cable company. i save about 60 bucks a month and get a hell of a lot more work done, all the while still getting to watch what i wanted to watch on TV via the Internet. - bird757, on 09/23/2008, -0/+8Hulu is only allowed to show what content providers allow them. As Hulu makes more and more money (For the content providers), the number of Family Guy episodes may increase.
So to use Hulu to watch shows will help it become better.
Yay Hulu! I use it everyday. - JessicaSarahS, on 09/23/2008, -0/+8yeah! I love hulu, it introduced me to a few new shows. I have since purchased those on dvd to see them in better quality. But I still go to hulu for other shows, and to watch during my lunch break at work.
