- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry, but I think i'll stick with Audible. Gutenberg is good for e-texts of old books, but hearing a computer read a book would be unbearable after a few minutes
- freeb26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.audiobooks.net has around 400 free audio books.
http://www.literalsystems.org is another free public domain book site - daak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They've got a lot of interesting books on there too...
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this is cool, thanks! I'm loving Hound of the Baskervilles. It's read by a VERY good professional reader. Great digg.
- lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The computer generated ones are pretty bad, but some of the human-read ones are really good.
- shanediesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I freakin love audiobooks.
- kelway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow - the computer-read texts are really quite good. I used TextAloud MP3 with the AT&T Natural Voices, and these walk all over what I was able to accomplish... Imagine that!
- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love free, but I also can't stand listening to either robotic text to speech read classic literature, or poorly recorded old ladies recording into their dell microphones.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How can you say that it saves time listening to books instead of reading them? Do some people actually read slower than someone can speak the text aloud?
Anyway, for more audiobooks:

I'll stick to the printed ones, Machiavelli's The Prince is next... - prowling-tiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool Digg+++
- kelway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@rauz -
Fot those about to drive to work and back. - hold_steady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GREAT FIND!!!!
- cssdev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"how many times are you guys going to add this?????"
This is for audio books, not text. You fail it. - Kramerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good stuff..besides the fact they don't have a book i need to read for school
- martin20088, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0some reviews here http://www.audiobooklover.net/
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've known about this from watching The Screen Savers back when it was on TechTv. Leo Laporte had the president of Project Gutenberg on. In a way this is old news but it doesn't hurt to bring it out again. Great digg!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like this site, nothing more to say. +digg
- Chango_Family, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, the Digg that keeps on giving (just like the clap!)
I just typed in Mark Twain, Grimm and Conan Doyle and noticed that there are
text files too.
Nice Digg, dont care if its a dupe,
if I dont know it, its news to me. - NarfTrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the free? The barely audible bit rate is, but anything
higher than 8kb isn't. - Daracle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kudos to the project Gutenberg folks.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@kelway, point. Was more referring to the short text made by the original poster.
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Project Gutenberg is nothing but good stuff. They are definitely one of the best things to hatch from the net.
Awesome digg. - Diggg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would all the 'Dupe Nazis' realize that not everyone has memorized each and every thing submitted to Digg.
So, if someone, through the goodness of their heart, inadvertently submits something similar then how about cutting them a bit of slack?
I hadn't seen any previous diggs about 'Gutenberg audio books' so I really appreciated this one! - offline_gal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm kinda hesitant to post here but you can check out The Public Domain Podcast if you're into audiobooks. I read stories I choose from The Public Domain. I'm on podcast #7 (I produce one a week, sometimes two) so there's a limited selection at the moment but I intend to keep going so soon they'll be more to choose from.
Disclaimer: Though I do have some acting experience I'm doing this mainly for fun and to get into podcasting so those of you who only like professional narrators stick to one of the pay places. Otherwise...enjoy! - Beagen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AWESOME digg!
- offline_gal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The url for the podcast: http://publicdomainpodcast.blogspot.com
- aabudara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Audio Book Fortress ( http://www.audiobookfortress.com ) has around 30 free audio books and much more at very low prices (under 10). And it keeps adding free titles every month.
- CubicleAmazon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I followed that http://www.simplyaudiobooks.com link, but didn't see anything about a free trial. Turns out they've taken it off the homepage, but you can still get it if you click through on either of the self-promoting ads on the homepage. Like here.
- terrelljacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried SimplyAudio books but prefer Jiggerbug--they're just faster. They DO have a free trial AND if you use coupon code BCLC you get an extra 20% off.

Enjoy!
Oh! and they give free downloads, icing on my audiobook cake. - kikicoelacanth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you needneedneed something on audio that isn't available (or is brutally bad) thru Gutenburg, just do a free trial at one of the rental/download audio book places (ie this audio books rental place).
- kikicoelacanth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ooops... didn't link it. http://www.simplyaudiobooks.com
- Gnomelord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Eh... Nothing beats a book. Audio books are for the illiterate.
- clancywiggum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0search it, dont dupe it!
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love Gutenberg. We all love Gutenberg. That is no excuse for it being on the front page every week.
Sure, you say, this is audiobooks and the other diggs only said books. Too bad that audiobooks are a type of book and that the front page of Gutenberg directly links to the audiobooks. This is roughly equivalent of somebody Digging slashdot.org and then, the next day, somebody else Digging it.slashdot.org. It just doesn't work.
"But if it front pages it must belong." No. Common misconception. Just because something is user-driven doesn't mean there aren't guidelines to be followed. The about page labels Digg as a "technology news website". The submit page says to make sure things are tech-related and not dupes. The problems drop-down tells you to report duplicates and old news. By not following these guidelines you are working against Digg. The worst offenders are those who *know* it fits under those categories and know they shouldn't Digg it, but Digg it anyway.
And we don't expect everybody to memorize every submission. That's what searching is for. Digg has a search utility. Google can search Digg, too. Surely one of those would have found the several Project Gutenberg submissions.
We are willing to cut people some slack if there is one or two duplicates or non-news or other non-belonging item, but when such items occur as often as things that do belong, action has to be taken.
Free Digg! Keep it clean! Report this story as a duplicate! - doorman444, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"how many times are you guys going to add this?????"
obviously people like it so get the ***** over it - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0how many times are you guys going to add this?????
