- pompom246, on 10/12/2007, -6/+62Sayid's just cool like that.
- cully, on 10/12/2007, -58/+105I know this will probably get modded down. But don't you think it's a little disrespectful, or at least inconsiderate, to make a joke like that about a POW? It seems like people, I'm sure myself included, are a little too flippant with jokes. It might not seem all that harmful, but I think it degrades our love for our fellow man.
Or, maybe it's just a symptom of a larger problem. Who's to know :) - manfrin, on 10/12/2007, -17/+55This watch I got here was first purchased by your great-grandfather during the first World War. It was bought in a little general store in Knoxville, Tennessee. Made by the first company to ever make wrist watches. Up till then people just carried pocket watches. It was bought by private Doughboy Erine Coolidge on the day he set sail for Paris. It was your great-grandfather's war watch and he wore it everyday he was in that war. When he had done his duty, he went home to your great-grandmother, took the watch off, put it an old coffee can, and in that can it stayed 'til your granddad Dane Coolidge was called upon by his country to go overseas and fight the Germans once again. This time they called it World War II. Your great-grandfather gave this watch to your granddad for good luck. Unfortunately, Dane's luck wasn't as good as his old man's. Dane was a Marine and he was killed -- along with the other Marines at the battle of Wake Island. Your granddad was facing death, he knew it. None of those boys had any illusions about ever leavin' that island alive. So three days before the Japanese took the island, your granddad asked a gunner on an Air Force transport name of Winocki, a man he had never met before in his life, to deliver to his infant son, who he'd never seen in the flesh, his gold watch. Three days later, your granddad was dead. But Winocki kept his word. After the war was over, he paid a visit to your grandmother, delivering to your infant father, his Dad's gold watch. This watch. (holds it up, long pause) This watch was on your Daddy's wrist when he was shot down over Hanoi. He was captured, put in a Vietnamese prison camp. He knew if the gooks ever saw the watch it'd be confiscated, taken away. The way your Dad looked at it, that watch was your birthright. He'd be damned if any slopes were gonna put their greasy yella hands on his boy's birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide something. His ass. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ass two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you.
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28> Please stop crying over these terrorists
Since when are they terrorists? Until there's been a trial, they are only alleged to be terrorists.
Personally, I find it quite disturbing that people like you seem to view the Geneva Conventions as an inconvenience to find ways around, rather than a guiding principle on how to treat prisoners humanely.
Even if the Geneva Conventions don't apply, that doesn't *justify* torture, it just means you're getting away with it. Since when do civilised people need laws to tell them torture is wrong? - iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Imagine if he hid a cowbell.
- stewdog1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Definite arsehole. Who wouldn't want to contact their captor and interrogator? Talk about an opportunity to reminesce (sp?) over the good times they had together?
- daedal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15How is that pompous? If I beat you up, throw you in the trunk of a car and proceed to interrogate you, would you want to contact me later on? ...except for obvious revenge reasons.
He did mention something about him being a "good man" but still. Can't blame the guy for not wanting to open old wounds. - jawngee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Of course they should.
And to the idiots toeing the FOX News political agenda, it's time for you zombies to start thinking for yourselves.
Let's have a little history lesson.
In the late 1770's, British controlled colonies had a popular uprising against the tyranny of British rule - let's call this the American Revolutionary War, or the War for Independence.
One of the most unusual aspects of this war, were the colonies use of guerrilla combat tactics against a traditional military machine. American colonies didn't have a military even closely comparable to that of the British empire (despite Britain's logistics issues). American "rebels" had to resort to guerrilla war techniques, and, what would today be labeled as "Terrorism" to achieve the goals of kicking the British occupiers out.
For some reason, we can't draw parallels with our own history as a country with the struggle of countries that have been continuously occupied and manipulated by super powers for political goals in opposition of the welfare of the countries citizens. In other words, WE created the Muslim fanatic. WE created the current environment we are so hopelessly entrenched in. WE brought this on ourselves.
Think about it. Think about the roots of our country. How do you dispose a super power from occupation of your country when you don't even have 1/10th the military power? You resort to cheap but effective guerrilla technique. You find and plot a course of action that is within your budget, both fiscally and in terms of man power.
Abu Ghraib is a slap in the face of American ideals. In America, we are taught innocent until proven guilty. In America, we believe a man has a right to a trial to defend himself against his accusers in the fairest possible forum.
Abu Ghraib is criminal, both politically and morally. We are no longer a democracy. We no longer believe in freedom. We no longer believe in anything other than our own safety and we happily sacrifice our personal rights and our own morality in exchange for safety, because the modern American can't live with discomfort. Give us our XBOX, I promise not to talk badly about the government! I swear it! Just let me play some more Halo. Who cares if people in foreign countries are being placed in gulags to rot without due process of law? Who cares if people in foreign countries are being deprived the very freedoms we are supposed to be promoting to them?
Each day Abu Ghraib goes on, we create more radicals and fundamentalists. You CANNOT TEACH MODERATION THROUGH EXTREMISM. If you think Abu Ghraib is not extreme and is not criminal, you are a ***** idiot through and through.
People need to start standing the ***** up. People need to start being comfortable with being uncomfortable. People need to start being OK with not being safe. What do we get in exchange? Freedom. A chance to show the world that we aren't the pigs they know us to be, that we can stand behind ideals, instead of tactical nuclear weapons and secret prisons where people are being tortured in violation of international law. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26@Bogtha: Wow. So you actually took the time to post on an internet thread about how much you don't like someone's joke. People never cease to amaze me.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20"Except our soldiers who were tortured were uniformed US soldiers, whereas the guys in Abu Ghraib were not uniformed nor were they recognized by any nation. Therefore, they are not protected by Geneva Conventions. Same rule applies to our special forces soldiers who are captured, because they do not wear the insignia of the US and our government does not recognize their existence. Please stop crying over these terrorists who show no remorse for beheading and exploding unarmed civilians, including Iraqis."
Yep. Lets turn them into one-dimensional "evil doers" so we never question the motives for their actions. They'll be a lot easier to kill that way.
If a law is immoral and unethical it should not be followed, plain and simple. - skytimelapse, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17"Therefore, they are not protected by Geneva Conventions."
So it's okay to torture them?!
WTF has happened to digg when this comment gets modded up so high?? WTF?! - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -21/+30Ok, so he and others are suing the Iraq government to pay them for damages over when they were captured and beaten.
Interesting, I guess the Abu Garib POWs should also sue the US government and ask for similar compensations. - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I did not read all the comments, but it might be that some people do not understand the mentality of a pious Muslim. It is strictly forbidden in Islam to take something that does not belong to you. Many pious Pakistanis, for example, won't pick up either penny or a pound from the pavement of any street.
In the past two years there were couple of stories of taxi drivers returning fortunes left in their cars to its owners or to the authorities.
And, yes, Shariah prescribes amputation of the hand for a wanton theft (stealing food in the time of hunger does not qualify). - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15What are you talking about? You ever read about Iraqi "interregation" techniques?
No questions
Work you over with a hammer for about 30 minutes
Put you back in your cell
You're an idiot. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11seems like that was a pretty brave thing to do.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15I find it remarkable that so many people on Digg here are willing to justify US torture either because Iraq does it or because they do not fall under the protection of the Geneva Convention. Either you believe that torture is absolutely wrong or you don't.
I find it ironic that many of the same people that are willing to justify torture are devout Christian fundamentalists. Would Jesus torture another human being?
***** country of ignorant, self-rightous, hypocritical morons. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I don't see anything in TFA saying the Iraqi was interested in giving the watch back - just that he had it, among other items, and his phone number.
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17gold dig? *****, if i were held captive in solitary confinement and beaten for 2 weeks i'd want some damned restitution as well.
- SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Hhehe, I pray that wasn't recited from memory.
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10sounds like the worst trailer EVER, but somehow the presense of Arnold makes it all better

- brokoli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@pimpalicious316
yeah i mean it's not like you're in war or something. 0_o - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13It is kind of unreasonable to expect an innocent, non combatant guy who was arrested in the middle of the night from his bed to wear an uniform identifying him as a terrorist.
I also believe some of them died because of that torture, and many others were subjected to very cruel and unnecessary treatments. - mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Coincidentally just read this on CNN.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/05/30/vet.lottery.ap/index.html
A U.S. soldier and his girlfriend found a winning lottery ticket on the ground at a convenience store Monday and turned it in to police, who were able to find its owner -- a $2,500 winner with no idea her lucky ticket was missing.
....
Boniberger, of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, was stationed in Baghdad and returned to the United States in September 2005.
Resume: war time is a time for the show of what puts a human above all the creations and a time for surfacing for the lowliest scam (abu Ghraib). - Ductapemaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No offense, but he's kind of an ass, don't you think? Suing over something that happens in EVERY war?! Every war we've ever been in, there are POW's and now (cause they can) they sue the country that captured them...what the heck is up with americans and suing anyways? Sue for this, sue for that, every friggin day. Most of it is bogus too, like that wendy's chili thing. Anything for money, I guess.
Well, that just about sums up my rant, so mod me up or down, I don't give a crap.
Thanks for listening in... - msipes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Met Jeff a long time ago. It was my Dad's best friend over in Korea. Flew A-10's in GWI. Great guy. Deserves all the awards in the world.
- geninstability, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Either you believe that torture is absolutely wrong or you don't."
Amazingly, some of us are able to function without resorting to absolutes. - turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6sayid stuffed peoples nails with bamboo. no thanks, you can call me later.
- puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you people honestly propose that we become the only nation in the world that does not use torture to extract information? grows some balls you ***** pussies
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 :) was just gonna say the same thing , reminding me of Pablo Francisco.
And another great Quote :
"Hey dude I pierced my liver, don't tuch it or i'll ***** my pants"
THIS IS RELEVANT BECAUSE : the iraqi "captor" obviously has a sense of humour" - bot001220, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Bogtha: Well it's good to know that you, Mr. King of the Interet are taking the time to comment on this issue and I'm sure that with you whining about people who make those types of jokes on an anonymous Internet forum it will soon come to and end :D
As for the people "who think that it's funny to answer 42 to every question"... you think that you somehow posting a sharply-worded rant on a random thread will stop them? If anything you are only fueling their need for attention. The fact that you feel so strongly about this probably shows that you used to be one of those people once and are now ashamed. It's OK. Just do what everyone else does and learn to ignore them. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@jawngee
I'd like to sign up for your newsletter sir. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10Sounded interesting, until I read that last bit about him suing Iraq. Especially trying to gold dig money away from the new Iraq government.
- NeonDemon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i know this isn't the main subject of the article but... "Lawyers for the POWs are contacting the new Iraqi government about reaching a settlement, Fox said." is just plain asinine.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5You reminded me of Pablo Francisco, you get a cookie
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Don't worry, they are. Ramsey Clark is heading that effort.
- freexe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Go watch pulp fiction
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7It would just mean he governates part-time.
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9Wow, can you be a little bit more stereotypical?
please...
And give me a break, the term "torture" gets thrown around a lot. Hell worse tactics are used in detention in a high school than the so called "torture" going on.
Go read about torture techniques then try to compare even the most horrible acts in Abu grab (hint, they sure as hell are not when the US owned it). Torture is something real, its not some fake discomfort crap the media is trying to pretend qualifies. The Geneva convention doesnt even apply because it isnt torture.
oh and that attitude of American's is precisely why no one gives a ***** what you think when it comes to world affairs. It is easier just to ignore trolls like you. - puffarthur, on 10/12/2007, -32/+31Except our soldiers who were tortured were uniformed US soldiers, whereas the guys in Abu Ghraib were not uniformed nor were they recognized by any nation. - Arnos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dang you're right about them christians. We should follow the Middle East practices instead....
I know!!! We could create a "Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" (Stolen from Fark article) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5check out http://www.evilbible.com
You'll learn that christianity does advocate murder and torture! Those abortion clinic bombers and those who kill gay people are, in fact, the most true christians.
Christians, next time you want to scoff at the "72 Virgins for suicide bombers" idea... Take a look at yourself. - tjg66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Link stopped working, the story don't exsist anymore

- saisumimen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4"If it was a one-off, then I wouldn't have bothered. But I see it over and over again..."
You think you're the first person to have complained about something like this? Cliched jokes have their own charm. If you got a little chuckle from it, you dugg the comment and moved on... if you didn't, you dugg it down; you're free to do that -- it's a free country.
However, taking the time to comment as you have shows the kind of person you are. The rest of us choose to ignore the "social retard who thinks that it's funny to answer 42 to every question" while you for some reason choose to acknowledge him, either due to your unconscious fascination with them or your shame that you yourself used to do that and now are overcompensating to show the world how much you are *NOT* like that anymore.
You're the kind of person who hears a dumb joke and instead of just faking a laugh or ignoring it, you have to break it down explain why it was dumb (everybody knows somebody like you). You're an intelligent person, we get it. But nobody cares the reason why a joke is not worthy of your approval. You go on lengthy, well-thought out tirades about things you hate and how much things bother you and how much you hate people. Again, you are highly intelligent but are just as bad as "social retards", just in a different way. Just as you recognize "social retards" and feel the need to express how stupid they are, the rest of us recognize you both and feel a little sorry for the both of you. -
