- gamemaster357, on 12/06/2007, -5/+61digital downloads?
well imo, id rather have a hard copy of something
just saying - stalefries, on 12/06/2007, -2/+48"What does IDK mean?"
"I don't know"
"Then why do you use it?!?" - chingy1788, on 12/06/2007, -3/+31HD Streaming and downloading of HD content would kill my quota, and many other peoples quota...
- InfamousAtheist, on 12/06/2007, -3/+30On the big-person internet, we prefer WTF. The sentiment is the same, so why avoid the generally accepted standard? Are you trying to avoid cursing?
- D3koy, on 12/06/2007, -3/+24Yeah this works until the cable company decides my quota is considerably less than it is now...HD Downloads are fail...You want HD? Buy the dammed disc...
- Bishop256, on 12/06/2007, -0/+18yea the only problem with digital downloads is DRM would pretty much become standard
- carrera594, on 12/06/2007, -8/+22Is anyone really surprised? Seriously?
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -4/+17You mean that Bay is full of *****? No, I am not surprised.
- gcnaddict, on 12/06/2007, -2/+14Who gives a *****.
- Murdats, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11TLA's are fine, its the ETLA's that are annoying (extended three letter acronyms)
- dvsbastard, on 12/06/2007, -2/+13Stop making up TCA's
TCA = Three Character Acronyms... I just made that up... Annoying isn't it?! - banmaster, on 12/06/2007, -2/+13Well after Bay's hissy fit about Transformers being limited to only 1 format and then his quiet little apology 2 days later, I'm guessing that this is just more hot air from him about something about which he has NO ***** IDEA!!!
- stalefries, on 12/06/2007, -1/+11Digital formats? You mean Divx, Xvid, h.264, Mpeg 1 through 4, ogg theora, wmv, etcetera?
- xdeliriumx, on 12/06/2007, -7/+16I was also suprised that there is even a new format war... I thought digital media was going to ride in and save the day... I guess now that these two are at each others throats it can now come in and REALLY save the day...
IPTV and downloading movies to my external hard drive FTW
wait for it... wait for it... - Hetman, on 12/06/2007, -3/+12I do not even care about the format wars but anything Micheal Bay says is worthless just like the garbage he directs on screen.
- D3koy, on 12/06/2007, -4/+13Acronym cursing is just as bad as the real thing!!!
- doctordbx, on 12/06/2007, -4/+13Why is digital downloads a bad thing? Seriously, this mentality is what messed up the music industry in the first place.
I know here in the middle east, because our local TV is crappy and releases behind the US for many films, many of us western expats get our media almost solely through the interweb as it is. - insllvn, on 12/06/2007, -1/+8Damn straight! What are we talking about again?
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -1/+8Yes. Judging by your username and icon I'm assuming you don't believe in paying for anything...
- Quickbreak, on 12/06/2007, -2/+8***** ***** ***** *****! It's not hurting anybody.
- coldfirenj, on 12/06/2007, -3/+9Actually I remember reading something where Bill Gates was saying exactly this. I don't think it's a big secret.
- Serak, on 12/06/2007, -1/+7Is anyone REALLY suprised to learn that Michael Bay isn't exactly a mental giant?
Really?
Anyone? - zwaldowski, on 12/06/2007, -0/+5My sentiments exactly.
- banmaster, on 12/06/2007, -0/+5And for God's sake, stop making movies!
- Qumahlin, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Um...your correct if your basing your entire strategy on the 360...they aren't. When the studios do eventually move to digital downloads who do you think they are going to go to for implementation....thats right...big daddy MS which already owns quite a bit of a few studios....
Your problem is thinking that the 360 is a big part of the master plan. It was only the first stage as it was easy to lay groundwork on top of the existing xbox live network, but in reality its only a small piece of the larger agenda. - latrosicarius, on 12/06/2007, -1/+5I would be up for Microsoft's idea of downloading of HD movies... I wouldnt have to leave my room, or buy a 1000$ player
- SquigglyP, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4I will only download an HD movie if it's something i can burn and play in some way. That's the only way i would ever do the internet HD *****. And you can forget about the DRM-free crap. They wouldn't want you to have a copy, you'd have to stream it every time you wanted to watch it. You're favorite movie isn't very popular? Too bad, it doesn't get enough plays to warrant allowing it extra bandwidth for the transfer so your film will stutter, block out and lag the whole time. The video quality won't be that great either, since they can't really encode at full bitrate, so you'll notice a lot of banding and compression glitches. Also, the colors will suck and the audio will be limited to AC3 (or .mp3) and there will be no special features, commentaries, interviews or any information at all regarding how the film was made. And after you buy the movie you'll still have to pay an additional fee every time you stream it to pay for the bandwidth.
Yes, i cannot ***** wait for that future.
They try to make it SOUND great for the consumer, but really it's just a license for them to find new ways to take your money. - inactive, on 12/06/2007, -4/+8Downloading 4-5 Meg songs is a whole lot different than downloading 20 Gig HD movies.
- Doghound, on 12/06/2007, -1/+5That Micheal Bay is creating theories about a company that is pretty much the primary supporter of a format he doesn't like? No... not really.
- nigdef, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4oh and am sure places like walmart and target want to piss all the money away they make off retail sales with punters coming into their store... don't kid your self hard copies will never be replaced by software version's no matter what anyone say's. the format will change but download over hardcopy. never happen. well maybe in the usa since you seem to want to stay indoors never venture outside and experience the real world. so maybe for you crazy peep's downloading your whole life will suit you
- robbh66, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Because Engadget likes to make money off other people's content?
- Serak, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3What's this about the HD-DVD drive dropping to $130? Link?
- woofers07, on 12/06/2007, -0/+35-10 years ago is was the same with digital audio. How many people do you think have "hard copies" of their mp3 collection now?
- ClockworksNine, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4"Operator! Give me the number for 9-1-1!"
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3This isn't the first time I've heard this theory, and that first time came up the moment MS announced they were backing HD DVD. Don't get fooled by the soft copy vs. hard copy issue, I'm sure the laserdisc people thought they were set for life, too.
- blindmelon1, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Reminds me of those Simpsons shirts in the early 90's with "I'm Bart Simpson, who the HECK are you?"
All the PC mums bought them for their kids, and they got beaten up by the kids with the"HELL" shirts :) - inactive, on 12/06/2007, -4/+7It's all MS's fault.
- Spoomeister, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3In other news, Ubuntu is fervently hoping both Microsoft and Apple will fail, so that it gets installed on every computer ever made in the last 30 years.
- Scatropolis, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3I think you misunderstand. I have backups of my CD collection on my computer. That's how I look at it and will continue to buy CDs.
- arduenn, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3NSS
- superkendall, on 12/06/2007, -2/+5Slow home networks and cable companies that will ban you after three HD movie downloads, FTL!
- banmaster, on 12/06/2007, -2/+5No it doesn't!
Bay is full of *****, just like when he went into a rage about transformers being limited to just 1 format.
Hes a spoilt brat who should never be let near a camera again, let along be allowed to issue ill-concieved statements about which he knows nothing! - Lynxpro, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Point blank, you are completely wrong. More Blu-ray plays support 24fps output than do HD DVD players. All Blu-ray players support 1080p output whereas most HD DVD players do not. As for Region Coding, most Blu-ray titles aren't coded for it, and the ones that are only have the region codes for 1 year. The lack of Region Coding is the reason why some of the New Line Cinema releases will be out on Blu-ray for 6 months before they debut on HD DVD; Hairspray being the first example of this. HD DVD does not have better audio formats...and in fact, the discs don't hold enough room on them for the average movie to support uncompressed audio, which the majority of Blu-ray discs support.
All future Blu-ray titles will play on older machines although they won't offer all of the features that come with those discs. In comparison, all HD DVD players that have ever shipped will not support the new 3x HD DVD layer disc.
Now go collect that check from Microsoft for your inaccurate FUD posting. - InferiorWang, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2bast:
# strong woody fibers obtained especially from the phloem of from various plants
# phloem: (botany) tissue that conducts synthesized food substances (e.g., from leaves) to parts where needed; consists primarily of sieve tubes
# cat- or lion-headed Egyptian goddess; represents life-giving power of the sun
what? - Spuy767, on 12/06/2007, -2/+4So let's see. . . Blu Ray movie, 25 gigabytes. That's 40 per terabyte hard drive. at 300$ a terabyte, that's $7.50 per movie, not to mention the cost of purchasing a digital copy which will likely be just as much as a hard copy is today. So all I see here, is content producers trying to get the consumer to foot most of the bill for distribution, thereby widening our sphincters just a little bit more.
- Spuy767, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3Not do condone his about face, but he got the peen from Paramount, saying, "Apologize and make up some story about why you said it, or we'll put the hurting to you."
- ibeetle, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3Do we really need to go through Engadget? Why not link to Mr. Bay's Blogg?
Here is the original Blog posting.
http://www.shootfortheedit.com/forum/showpost.php? ... - Thorlord, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2the development of plastic fiber optic cables will let us have faster internet speeds than we do now for the same prices. seeing as how every internet company is investing into this technology, i can assume it will be implemented as soon as possible when it comes out.
while i think that we currently do NOT have any great Digital download services worthy of replacing hard media, i do believe that if a service comes out that does it right, i will happily make the switch. something that will let me play the movie on any device, not limit me to the number of devices i can play it on, not limit me to a time or number of plays, and doesnt give a crap if i let my friends watch with me, and doesnt limit me to the number of times i download the same video.
im starting to love digital downloaded games, i enjoy steam because its the only service that actually adds to what you can do rather than take it away, if there was a steam-like version of digitally downloaded videos i would be very pleased and would switch quickly. - SquigglyP, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Which version of the Linear PCM on either disc would be considered of "Higher Quality"?
HD DVD is region free. I know. I have imported a number of films from three countries. And DVD's have only 6 regions.
Bluray has 3 regions.
***** i think you got me on this one. Both formats are 24/25 fps oh well, can't win em all...
The PIP in Blu-Ray is not supported by all the players or it is 'faked' by making a second copy of the stream with the PIP video actually as part of the second video stream. Thus the extra disc capacity is negated by the need to effectively have two copies of the film on the disc.
HD Players are also updatable via the same methods. ALL of teh players can connect to update tho, not just the select few BD players with the connectivity. - inactive, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3Digital download seems like a good idea, less clutter, and less competition to the death. However, even assuming that our hard drives are big enough, transfer speeds (especially in North America) are still going to be a big problem. Who's going to pay over 50 dollars a month for internet speeds that you can get for probably less in some other place?
