- digboy99, on 11/06/2007, -4/+131Who needs skype with something like this.
- hustl3, on 11/06/2007, -2/+94ohh man I like the sound of that. I have an access point at home, here at work and I'm barely on the go during weekdays.
- cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -1/+85free calls for the price of $10 dollards
I like the concept but lets not call it free lets call it mobile voip service - Chairboy, on 11/03/2007, -5/+66Interesting, this would put LESS strain on T-Mobile's network but you pay a premium. Funny, kinda like paying extra for digital cable when it uses less bandwidth than the old analog cable lines. We pay for the privilege to lighten the load of our vendors. In a world where bottled water is a multi-billion dollar industry, I suppose this makes sense, but jeepers...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+58how can we forget the iphone when you freaks are posting articles with "forget the iphone" in the title?
- youareretarded, on 10/11/2007, -1/+52I think the big story here is the ability to seamlessly switch between wifi and cellular and vice a versa.
Man I wish tmobile would have bought at&t wireless! - Idgit, on 10/11/2007, -14/+65http://www.digg.com/tech_news/State_of_the_Art_IPhone_Free_Cellphone_News
Already on the front page. With that said this has a much clearer title and description - civperc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33THIS is what I'm talkin' 'bout here! Way to go T-Mobile, I may switch from Sprint if this Wi-Fi deal pans out well.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28i think this should say "forget at&t"... apple is not a competitor of t-mobile...
- jsully, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14It's called SIPP. Nokia has a number of phones that already to this, such as the N95. This is nothing new - T-Mobile's just trying to market it.
- suprememilo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13well seeing as Skype is $30 a year for a number and you can put it on devices like the Cingular 8125, it would be cheaper to use skype for $30 a year than $120 a year.
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Well.... sucks to be eBay I guess heh.
- bluedino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9you can buy the wifi phones and use the wifi coverage without paying any extra fee. The 10 dollars is only if you want your wifi calls not to count against your minutes. You get the coverage boost either way which is good because t-mobile has never worked well inside any of the buildings i've lived in
- browrp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Cincinnati Bell released the exact same service a few months back called CB Home Run http://www.cincinnatibell.com/consumer/wireless/home_run/ I love it and haven't had any problems with it to date. The really nice thing is that Cincinnati Bell doesn't make you sign a contract like the rest of 'em do.
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I buy a phone for calls only, and this phone is exactly what I could use.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Wait, is this *only* in the US? T-Mobile will be carrying the iPhone in Germany. Is it possible that they might decide to run the same plan on the iPhone over there? Sure, it would need some custom firmware code but if Apple is up for it, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.
- xboxfiend, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9T-mobile could end up being the iphone carrier in Europe. They would have the best of both worlds.
http://www.pmptoday.com/2007/05/11/t-mobile-iphone-is-most-likely-for-europe/ - jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Well, we've had that feature in France for about a year now.
It's called "Unik".
The idea is that you only need one "unique" phone, no more fixed home phone.
What is really amazing is that the phone automatically switches from cellular to wifi, even during a call ; connexion is not lost. - qazyhoods, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9keep in mind you still have to pay for a regular service plan per month and $10 for this. so its not really free, its more of a sales pitch, kind of like "my circle" from alltel (wow! "free" calls to all my friends?! no wait, im still paying a monthly fee to talk to these people)
- PlasmaWhore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Here is Germany T-Mobile(Which is actually Deutsche Telecom, the AT&T of Germany) and all other cell providers give you a homezone number, which means that you get free calls to landlines and other people in their homezone. Your homezone is usually your entire city, or if you live in a big city it is within a few miles of your house. My cell bill is only about $15 a month for unlimited minutes. I don't know why this isn't possible in the US.
- fanclerks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Free market and greedy companies.
- bluedino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7this story is a bit late. i picked up a wifi phone at a t-mobile in phoenix a week ago and it's been great. i used to have to go out to go out on my patio to get signal and now i get full signal via wifi all over my apartment and free calls to boot.
- sdfghjkl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6T-Mobile's solution allows you to use your one number. This basically turns any wifi access point into a cell tower.
- civperc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@ChristianBk, does it really bother you that much? This title is a much better description
- v0lrath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I have T-Mobile and my coverage is great; I've had maybe one dropped call in the past 6 months, but I don't remember. This is in the Seattle area.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7You must be new here.
- nibster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6not only free phone calls are great, but I've been with tmobile for maybe about 5 years now. They have the GREATEST customer service ever. Even if you go over on your minutes, you call before your billing cycle and they'll take care of it so you don't get any overage charges. Digg me up if you have tmobile and agree.
- jonshipman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Cincinnati Bell isn't a nation wide service.
- surfing, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Did you read the article?
"HotSpot @Home phones work with any Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) router"
"There’s one big limitation to all this freeness: these phones can’t get onto any hot spot that require you to log in on a Web page (to enter a credit card number, for example). Unfortunately, this restriction rules out most airports and many hotel rooms." - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Meh... it seems to be international dupe day -- the O2/UK iPhone story has been on the front page three times now ;D
- sekhui, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7this is freaking awesome. sorry for the moronic comment but it is.
- blacklilyninja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6yup apple really should have used this feature/service. It was totally doable.
- diggSJaustin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Ah, I love the competitiveness of the free market system.
- bluedino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4most places i've travelled with my t-mobile phones has had good outside coverage but it wouldn't penetrate enough to work well indoors. Since using their wifi phones that problem is mostly solved as most places i hang around indoors have wifi signal i can used for voip coverage
- jonshipman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5but your tv also works with comcast.
- enivid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The guy who posted that reminds me of an excited Homer Simpsons who discovers a free trampoline in the paper: "Tramampoline! Tramoline!"
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's not $30 a year for a number, it's $20 / 3 months.
- RussellDovey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4During a call!?!?!?! I love the future.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I haven't dropped a single T-Mobile call since I've been with them, which is more than I can say for AT&T, where I'd drop a call nearly every time I was on the line.
- rbrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Fantastic idea. Wonder when it'll appear in the UK?
- noseeme, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4This made it to the front page because the title and description of the last (identical) story were not written as well. Unfortunate.
- rjam710, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So they can get bought back by that evil, monopolizing giant? No thanks.
- dcmjzero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i guess you are paying for the ability to switch off between their network and voip. and they give you a free modem.
- Eccohawk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3RTFA, it says you can access it from any access point that doesn't require login through a web portal. You can use it anywhere you can get a wifi signal.
- jmickey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2When people start clogging bandwidth with phone calls, the coffee shops that aren't already charging for wi-fi will and then you'll be paying $10 a month to be able to make phone calls on the wi-fi you pay $x a month to use. It is a cool idea, but it sounds sketchy to me to offer a service that totally relies on another (unaffiliated) company's service.
- mexifelio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3HAH, Classic!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3koGkT6ZPU - yabos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3But are there cell phones integrated with Skype yet? I don't know of any but I have seen some cordless land line + Skype phones.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3There's a Skype client for Windows Mobile. http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/
- daveisfera, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does anyone have a link to the actual announcement on the T-Mobile site? Or know what the plan is called for me to ask a rep about?
