- ElBeh, on 10/26/2008, -12/+63Who's Kevin Rose?
- techAU, on 10/26/2008, -0/+45One thing Kevin doesn't mention is the root cause of friend sign up fatigue - Distributed logins. If users weren't required to sign up with a new account on every site, but rather use the same login they already have (and remember) I'm confident people would be willing to try more services, a critical part of success for a startup.
While Open ID is gaining traction, it's still not accepted on many main stream sites, which in my eyes is a failing. - inactive, on 10/26/2008, -14/+59Stop worshipping Kevin Rose you vile heathen godless nerds
- ThermiteTerrace, on 10/26/2008, -1/+37Will Web 2.5 give things more lens flares and cutesy bubble logos?
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -11/+36Who is this kevin rose guy and why is everybody riding his dick?
- somedudemanguy, on 10/26/2008, -10/+31OMG OMG KEVIN ROSE MUST DIGG
- MtheoryX, on 10/26/2008, -0/+15While the multiple logins is a pain, we do have password managers and such to mitigate that.
My biggest issue is data portability. Profile information such as interests and such, and also pictures and videos. It's a huge pain to even venture into a new social application knowing I would not only have to add another login, but would have to transfer all that crap to the new profile. - hellogoodbye, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11The poor state of the economy could end up becoming a filter for good sites and web apps. Optimism in a bad economy is always nice.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -2/+9Since November of 2004.
- SpectralSounds, on 10/26/2008, -5/+12Digg is filled with Kevin Rose ass kissers too, what a coincidence!
- MavRevMatt, on 10/26/2008, -0/+7So someone remind me again how much Kevin's being paid to use Seesmic? Their flash player totally sucks 95% of the time I've ever had to play something in it.
- deff, on 10/26/2008, -2/+7Because its gilded with gold and studded with diamonds.
- cstaylor, 4 hr 40 min ago, -1/+6I dugg this because it was interesting, not because of Kevin Rose. Not that I don't like Kevin Rose, but seriously, maybe what he says is actually interesting, and that's why he's getting dugg. Not everyone is a fanboy.
- MAGZine, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4Enough money to buy a new couch, Mac laptop, and possibly an Audi R8.
- svensksvamp, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4Yes. I will help you with this big achieve of yours.
- Bullrun, on 10/26/2008, -1/+5Kevin Rose, isn't he the guy who had his friend make accounts on Digg and cause some stories to bet buried and others (supporting Digg and Kevin) to rise. How he forgets that some of us remember early days of Digg.
Just say'in. - KillPenguin, on 10/26/2008, -4/+7In before "Kevin Rose is a douche".
- MAGZine, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Some guy with this website.
Oh nevermind, you probably never heard of it before. - SuperMoses, on 10/26/2008, -1/+4But can I poke you?
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3That's why I host my own web sites and photos. I own it. No IP issues. No fees, change in trens, no BS. Social networking my ass. If my friends want to see the photos of us, got to my web site. I'll place banner ads if/when I want to make money from my traffic.
- scalded, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3I do not know with what trends Web 2.5 will be designed in, but Web 3.0 will be displayed with print stylesheets enabled and javascript disabled.
-Albert Einstein. - sockpuppets, on 10/26/2008, -2/+5I think you mean iDick.
- Dejital, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1CPKhAxPyU
- eriku, on 10/26/2008, -0/+3you have to really have your ***** together to make a startup work right now. I don't know why he's telling people to try it. I wouldn't suggest to anyone to piss away savings on a web start up right now. We still haven't seen the IT sector hit hard yet. That will happen next year when no one has money for new contracts starting in jan.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -4/+7Um, the site seems to be experiencing problems.
Could Kevin's site suffering from the digg effect? If so, I believe I've found my daily dose of "irony defined". - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Open ID is too complicated a concept to be useful to anyone who isn't a techie (and even those who are). Another thing Open ID doesn't solve is the fact that there is very little information tied to you with Open ID, it's basically just taking out having to create a new username and password. Everything else you still have to do.
That's why I see hope in Facebook Connect, which will let you login with your Facebook account on all sorts of non-Facebook websites and access your information as you choose, just like a Facebook application. Unfortunately having Facebook, a single company, become an even more central point of housing information about you is a scary thought, but it seems like the easiest way to take your identity with you anywhere online. - stockjones, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2Well said by both. The next big Digg or whatever wont be by some big corporate conglomerate. It will be some small site started by someone on a low budget doing something unique or catching the right audience at the right time. Opportunities exist.
- mlukas, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2seesmic is not working here :/
- ATLien74, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Any relation to Axl?
- jasoninoakland, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2We're bootstrapping our little startup, keeping our day jobs, and avoiding spammy "tell your friends!" sorts of *****. We have a great idea & implementation, and we're committed. Nice to hear validation from a successful veteran.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2Oh, and the other ad I see on here is for Ford. Wonder how long they will pay for finding out that Digg users aren't buying Fords. ;)
- jonnyboyca, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Web 2.5 should bring back the 'BLINK' tag!
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -1/+3Give me a break. Kevin Rose is full of *****. He forgets to mention that he himself is capitalized with ad revenue. The ad that I see to the right at this moment is for a TV show called 'Storm Chasers'. How do you think the 'storm chasers' are monetized? Ads. You can advertise all you want and if people don't have money or when inflation/deflation cranks it up ad revenue goes down the ***** with the rest of it. *Especially* for sites like digg that leech off of other people's bandwidth/content. They aren't creating content - they are linking to it. There's a HUGE difference. You heard it here first, sites are going to start blocking users coming off of leech content sites. Digg does it very well but at the end of the day, they aren't producing anything. Typical dot com bubble architecture. Everyone thinks ads will pay for it all. Sort of like subprime mortgages.
- ElBeh, on 10/26/2008, -1/+3http://digg.com/comedy/Digg_user_explains_the_poin ...
- yesplease151, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2indeed
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1I'm not saying it would be a bad thing in an otherwise healthy economy. It does become a bad thing when ad revenue doesn't pay for bandwidth/server racks. It's arguable that most of web2 is socially-based. Companies don't get the warm fuzzies because people are sharing pictures of their grandkids - they like having a pool of eyeballs to serve ads to. That social aspect becomes worthless if the ads aren't paying back. You really think facebook would run at a loss (barring any other nefarious data-mining activity we may not know about)? I guess alot of these sites will try a subscription model - which makes sites like digg a (largely) moot point.
- YodaJones, on 10/26/2008, -6/+7Since when is Kevin Rose a web visionary?
- sockpuppets, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Al Swearengen?
- InitialDMP5, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Everything will be copper and metallic. You read it here first.
- SeraphX, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1I'd hit it.
- Olfster, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Centralization is dangerous. It makes us expect too much and delivers very little, in the way of convenience, while creating hazards that would not otherwise exist. I would not trust another company to handle anyone logging into my systems. Everyone here is smart enough to know why, at least I hope they are.
- Z3r0t0l0rEnCe, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Wow -9 diggs. I dugg the story and was helping Kevin and I get -9. You people are stupid who just rather talk ***** than give someone a chance. Sorry for liking the vid and yes I am a fan of Kevin and have been since ScreenSavers. So for all the people on here who just want to talk *****...KISS MY ASS!!!!!!!!
- SuperMoses, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1This is why it has to be an open standard like Open ID. That way you can register your profile/info with whatever company you want (or even your own server) and then share it with whatever service that is is compatible with this standard. But the standard needs to be completely open. ***** Facebook Connect.
- TomPhoolery, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1oh come on you could have thought of something funnier than that, couldn't you? ;)
- amroyce, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Dugg. I don't know who Kevin Rose is never heard of him before) but what he said is interesting and pretty obvious at the same time.
- diggdatt, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1The problem is that not everyone lives in Silicon Valley and can run a business for several years without seeing a profit or even breaking even. I'd like to see someone start a "web 2.5" company in South Dakota and have it running with 10 employees for 3 years without every breaking even, it simply will cannot happen without VC funding.
Sure I know its possible to start a site on your just yourself or maybe even 2 people, but you have to be a programming genious (someone that could get hired at Yahoo or Google in 1 interview).
Kevin didn't even code digg, someone from India did, but I've always wondered how they didn't just pirate out the code. - CyberSally, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1What about Web 3.0?
- madk, on 10/26/2008, -1/+2Please don't take his advice...I don't like competition.
- aforwark, on 10/27/2008, -0/+0Anyone remember when Digg actually had stuff worth reading?
- MAGZine, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1And did it end in a terrible disaster?
