- BenKaras, on 10/06/2008, -1/+133You can still ***** some ***** up at 80 mph.
- brainjuice, on 10/07/2008, -2/+108Prepare for the onslaught of "I Jailbroke my Escort!" stories.
- ohnoerino, on 10/06/2008, -3/+101I'm glad this didn't exist when I first got my license :)
- joltjake, on 10/07/2008, -0/+83You can ***** some ***** up at 30 mph.
- MindStalker, on 10/06/2008, -6/+75Why not let parents set the limit. If I know my kid can't handle the interstate responsibly I'll set it to 50 and tell him to keep off.
HECK, if it was a real feature I'd set these presets.
Radio on NPR 50% volume, can't turn it off or turn the channel.
150 horsepower max at any time.
50MPG limit.
0-50 in 5 minutes :)
Chances the kid will ask to borrow the car unless its a dire emergency.
0 - cryemoxkidcry, on 10/07/2008, -2/+41Why must they keep trying to curve natural selection?
- theone3, on 10/07/2008, -5/+43Actually, this is quite dangerous.. If you're driving along at the speed limit and you need an extra boost to .. for example... or get out of the way of a truck that is changing lanes (or countless other situations) this could potentially be deadly. I mean, any accident caused by this would by definition be occurring at high speed, and the driver may not be aware of the speed limit.
- acmaurer, on 10/06/2008, -0/+30no joke. so they'll kill themselves at 80 mph instead of 90. woot.
- Revolutionista, on 10/07/2008, -8/+37Way to treat the symptoms and not the problem.
- ELCad, on 10/07/2008, -1/+30We has those when I was a kid, it was call a Yugo. Except they came from the factory unable to go that fast.
- benologist, on 10/07/2008, -2/+28I think you might be mistaken.... these are features that are directly appealing to parents who often contribute to a kid's first car.
- FasterGun, on 10/07/2008, -1/+27My first car was a horse *****.
- Jooshbro, on 10/07/2008, -6/+31As a 17 year old male, I speak for myself when I say that this sounds like a neat technology, and I speak for the rest of my peers when I say that this ***** sucks.
- macwac, on 10/07/2008, -4/+29What is with the world as of lately? It is as if everyone is getting off at the big brother concept. If you can't trust your kids with your car, don't let them borrow.. does the world no longer believe in trust and honesty? Do we really have to watch what everyone else does? This is really sad.
- umbriago, on 10/06/2008, -3/+25It WILL please the people who buy the cars....parents. But will the system be hacked? Almost certainly.
- therealrico, on 10/06/2008, -7/+27This is a smart feature, 80 might seem fast, but hell I was driving 120 when I was a teenager. Teenagers are stupid when it comes to cars and also like to show off for their friends, I was lucky I didn't get into an accident at that age.
- Shadowhawk109, on 10/07/2008, -0/+19Potential alternate meaning aside...
- pilot3033, on 10/07/2008, -0/+18leaving the phone at a known friends house.
then what?
Good parent/child relationships are built on trust, not spying. - Elderon, on 10/07/2008, -1/+19indeed you can. picture said 30 mph person pulling onto the freeway and the swerving and hilarity that would probably ensue.
I think the safer bet is to just keep a log of time and speed. You don't need to know the location your kid was going to see that they were being wreckless.
ford speed log 10 / 6 / 09
Ignition: 5:00pm
35 mph 5:05pm
50 mph 5:10pm
87 mph 5:15pm
94 mph 5:20pm
Uhh soooo billy, why were you driving 90+ mph? no car for you. It's that simple. This is just a way for parents to get out of parenting even more. Now they have the car company helping babysit peoples kids. - MScrip, on 10/07/2008, -2/+20I wouldn't care what kind of nanny features are on this car.
If my parents wanted to buy me a BRAND NEW CAR at age 17... I'd let them.
80mph? Fine.
Seat belts? Always wear them anyway.
Volume? Not a big deal anyway.
Parents buying you a car? Priceless (literally) - masfenix, on 10/07/2008, -2/+19True, however they dont need the option or freedom to kill others.
- joncannon, on 10/07/2008, -1/+18Limited to 150 hp? Damn, you're young. I only had 125 hp in my first car.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/07/2008, -0/+15I'm pretty sure there's already a system like that for DUI offenders, and I'd rather not simply treat us ALL like criminals.
- avataros, on 10/06/2008, -1/+15Ford's new tagline: "Will anybody please think of the children?"
- Jooshbro, on 10/07/2008, -2/+16I actually said that I liked the idea, but whatever, I'm all for being parented by strangers on Digg. :)
- scabbers, on 10/07/2008, -0/+14I had to buy my own freaking car.
- BobScratchit, on 10/07/2008, -0/+14Because the V-Chip is such a popular feature, this obviously will be too.
- molotovcat, on 10/07/2008, -2/+16I'm glad our schools are teaching kids the difference between speed and acceleration.
Please point out where it says the acceleration will be limited.
Thanks. - greeniemeani, on 10/07/2008, -1/+14120 as a teenager? Do you live in ***** South Dakota?
- dannyboy3020, on 10/07/2008, -0/+12Not being able to judge your limits is a defining characteristic of being a teenager. It's the way we learn. Can you honestly say you've never done any stupid ***** when you were a teenager? Everyone has.
- DarkerMaster, on 10/06/2008, -3/+15Hell it would have encouraged me to break our some wire cutters and go to work on the speedo sensors.
- Eqxy, on 10/07/2008, -3/+15I wouldn't think it'd be the speed that kids would be pissed about... but controlling the volume of the music? That's like turning down the volume on someone's soul.
- Ajajadude, on 10/07/2008, -2/+13Yeah, those 16 year olds will take their $15k and buy a brand new car from another car company.
- KibblesnBitts, on 10/07/2008, -0/+11Scene in Cloverfield 2:
Characters break into a car to get away from the little monsters, turns out its one of the fords....they dont make it out alive - Spyder810, on 10/07/2008, -5/+16Get a job and get your own car.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/07/2008, -0/+11Once the step-by-step HowTo guide is posted on MySpace and Facebook I'm sure we'd all know plenty.
- TrellSaracen, on 10/07/2008, -1/+12Great, just what we need: more arseholes who let the car do all the thinking for them.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/07/2008, -3/+14Also, always fun when your seatbelt buckle sensor fails when you are passing though a bad part of town and the sun is starting to go down...
And audio volume? Really? Aren't we getting a bit too far into the micromanagement department there? What, will version 2.0 have a webcam that detects kissing at make-out point too? - dizzy113, on 10/07/2008, -5/+16I swear I don't know how I've made it to 28 without all these safety precautions when I was growing up. What a horrible idea! I'm not saying you need to go faster than 80 all the time, but what if you are going 75 and need to accelerate and avoid an accident...just one of many possible examples that could come up.
- CoreOverride, on 10/07/2008, -1/+12That means you're doing something wrong.
Please, let him learn on something that isn't nice. Don't spoil any more of the world's young. - TechnoRabbit, on 10/07/2008, -1/+12Unfortunately, with drunk drivers they more often kill others than themselves. Think before you say stupid things.
- tw3nz0r, on 10/07/2008, -0/+10At 88 mph, you're going to see some serious *****!
- RedViper1999, on 10/07/2008, -2/+12I don't know what these kids are complaining about. I wish my parents had bought me a new car with these limitations. Instead I got a 20 year old beater with 106hp that topped out at 70 on a good day. Had such a bad sound system I left it off, and I always wear a seat belt so that doesn't matter.
- Berkana, on 10/07/2008, -6/+15They will alienate an entire generation of drivers with this. This illustrates the difference between tactics (short-term) and strategy (long-term).
- pHr34kY, on 10/07/2008, -1/+10They should program it so the car can't exceed 15mph unless everyone is wearing a seatbelt. That would create a great incentive to actually wear it.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/07/2008, -3/+12This is just an innocuous looking test program to iron out bugs before the government implements this technology on every car in the US.
- Ruger11mcrdpi, on 10/07/2008, -0/+9they actually already have that! it's a third party system, google it! I'm serious.
- corvairkid, on 10/07/2008, -0/+9@ Mindstalker
Except for the horsepower, you just described the 1994 Geo Metro I used to own. - bmystry, on 10/07/2008, -1/+10I understand most of the features but the seat belt one doesn't make much sense since everyone I know and even a observational survey we did when I was in drivers Ed showed that most teenagers actually wear a seat belt and that its older people were the ones not wearing them the most.
- swiftheart, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Keeping him off the highway would be an odd decision, considering the fact that highways are significantly safer than regular roads with intersections and cross-streets.
