- goosedotnu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sure, I'll give you, a stranger, unrestricted permission to sync files with my computer. Let me just finish having unprotected sex with dozens of five-dollar Vietnamese prostitutes, and we'll get started.
- HeapAlloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Completely useless, as there is no linux support."
Yes. Absolutely, positively, completely useless... for you.
/cry me a f'n river - Crazen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Microsoft is on this? Be careful guys, i think everyone knows what's Microsoft up to! :)"
Something different than the beloved Google or any other corporation? - infinitesnowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not quite clear what this does... Can you download off other people's computers? or only view it?
- nixdoctor, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Foldershare is completely Microsoftized now. Not only they have canned the Linux version, they are also making several changes to "integrate" it tightly to your windows live account. In the meanwhile, another startup appeared named "Dropbox" and I found it works just like foldershare, or maybe even better. www.getdropbox.com.
- Standaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone else having trouble with the install01.cab file? It says it can't find it on the CD-ROM, but I downloaded it off the site.
- strayan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had this installed for a while (the non-paid version). Now that it's free and we have access to the features of the full version [what was previously the paid version], does anyone know what they are?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is not that great. First you have to accept connections which means that it will not be functional for me at work behind the corp firewall, and at home you have to set up port forwarding (not a big deal, but not great for those who like to keep it simple).
A WebDAV server is probably a better solution for most people because it stores the files as a backup and can generally be accessed through firewalls without configuration, and can be accessed from any ad-hoc client.
iDisk is a perfect example, which also syncs automatically. But you do have to pay for it and there are storage caps. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems pretty secure to me...maybe I'll try it:
"FolderShare is a secure peer-to-peer system. Only you and your invited members can view or access files in your FolderShare library. FolderShare encrypts all files and messages exchanged on our network to ensure user privacy. All P2P communication on FolderShare is authenticated via RSA and encrypted via AES over SSL." - trump48257, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1It was bought by Microsoft after it's inception.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any restrictions? We'll let you decide...
* Share files up to 2 GB in size
Yeah, that's definitely a restriction. - ryos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FolderShare is awesome. I think last time M$ impressed me was with Word 5.
But I'm on an Intel Mac now and the app is PPC native. FolderShare is pretty much the last piece of software on my Mac that requires Rosetta. I guess I'll need an alternative sharing method... - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and to pirate copies of Windows Vista
- Leftyshields, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny the site is in php. They better get workin on a new .net site
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep Its in messenger 8 I digg dugg it
- shuffles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my bad, thought it was something else...
+digg - goosedotnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the greatest thing I've seen in a while. Foldershare fills me with nerd glee.
- nickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is going to be apart of Microsoft's "Live" messenger service.
http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?versionId=0eccd94b-eb48-497c-8e60-c6313f7ebb73
If you read that links FAQ's it tells you that the messenger will have folder share which is more efficient then sending the files over via email or other means. I don't care what Microsoft does if that can't make something better then I guess I would rather have them buy the best and implement it into their services, then have something crappy that they created themselves. - martindukeuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lmao, get little app!
very useful for me, college to home. Lets hope their firewall will allow it...probably not tho :( - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't this software made by the people behind Rhapsody and the now defunct AudioGalaxy?
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Completely useless, as there is no linux support.
But then again, 98% of digg noobs scream "microsoft sucks" whilst using XP. - ubbyba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im surprised that it has os x support since its from microsoft... but i digged the hell outta this one
- etaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is extremely cool. Micro$oft hit the jackpot with this one.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very very cool.
Worked like a charm, first time, behind home & enterprise firewalls.
As a Sys Admin tho, it works _too_ well! And is a bit scary...
If you're concerned about possible IP (intellectual property) leaks, I'd block the foldershare.com domain. - aznbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is actually something I've wanted to use for a while. I find it useful because I store and work on documents on both my home desktop and my laptop. This seems to be a convenient way to "sync" files when I'm out and about.
- bmc152006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ill have to try this sometime
- arturofonseca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone interested in testing foldershare with me?, arturo (at) fonseca (dott) com
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's a smart move on microsoft to embrace p2p so they can have some [whatever limited] control over it.
- MrDiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol....you're right. And with the now most famous WINDOWS VISTA!!!!! "Our users are going to triplicate. Good bye Linux"
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm but then i'll have to leave my office PC on 24/7 if i want to pick files off from it....
ahh heck it'll be fun. I'm at work now so I can get home to test it out soon. - atroph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice app. I'm able to sync my windows directories to my linux file server. I don't really need to download the stuff from a remote location. In house sync is good enough for me.
- r00ted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are we really going to put trust in Microsoft to offer a p2p program? I think tinyp2p, or MoleSter would be a better alternative than using software (now) managed by Microsoft...
- maxmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For OS X it uses Spotlight for remote searching. A little odd to see that in an MS product (even though they didn't develop it).
- bull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It uses Google Desktop to search from the web. Sadly I'm sure they'll change it but I'll digg it since they made it free.
- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft already added their little treat:
"Enhance FolderShare with Windows Desktop SearchTM
With Windows Desktop Search and FolderShare installed, you'll be able to search for files across all of your computers from any web browser."
Great service! +digg - smeager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never used it but it sounds more like a type darknet, to me at least, that Microsoft is trying to get control over (without the encryption). Microsoft's own unencrypted P2P which like everything else they surely will have access to (a trusted third party).
- jeffwalker9999, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0I have used www.foldershare.com for a few years now
I have over 25 gigs of applications on my p2p network being shared
I like the fact that it autosync's files and you do not have to manuel download files
I can highly recommend the application - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, from infoanarchy:
"As of this writing, FolderShare is contains no spyware. Also, although a centralized system, files are distributed completely peer-to-peer, meaning FolderShare.com does not see files that you send, only file names you have listed." - embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah - this explains the Folder Share feature in MSN Messenger 8 - nice.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It is not that great. First you have to accept connections which means that it will not be functional for me at work behind the corp firewall, and at home you have to set up port forwarding (not a big deal, but not great for those who like to keep it simple)."
Actually, it uses four different ports, any one of which will get through many firewalls. If it cannot accept incoming connections, it falls back to a mode where it checks every so often. Basically, it *will* work behind most firewalls.
As for port forwarding, if you have a modern home router, it supports UPnP, meaning that it takes care of the port forwarding for you. Manual port forwarding is about dead with XP and modern working hardware. Admittedly, lots of older hardware had problems with UPnP, but nowadays it seems to work pretty well, as long as you don't disable it because of non-existant security concerns. - desbest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they're just trying to compete with streamload and gmail drive.
it can't be stopped. - drowelf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, what's the easiest way to set something like this up for myself? Is there any linux or windows app that will do this (be a a *secure* server with web browser access where all transfers are encrypted?). I'm sure I could build most of this pretty quickly using linux and ssh, but I'm wondering if there is a nice integrated package that will do it? Screw Microsoft, I only trust me with my files!
- snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its funny that site is in PHP...
- ryos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool. I have a few computers in my household and being able to sync folders on all of these machines make it well worth the setup hassle, which isn't much to start with...
- AlexAlbrechtSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's pretty neat.
However:
"Is the web download secure?
Right now, web downloads are not encrypted or secure."
HMMM???~!? - m1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is encrypted file transfer....
This is very cool. - DrunkenAwesomo, on 05/16/2008, -0/+0Microsoft doesn't hate Apple though, they see it as an advantage if you can use their products across platforms. I mean just look at office also at least they're trying with Windows Live it's been most of it's features were originally in .mac but look at how much .mac sucks.
- Tech2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to: goosedotnu
becareful of what you said or you end up nowhere the next morning when you wakeup. - brydude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does it have ports for windows portable? It keeps using the term "internet-enabled device".
