- saralk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38Why wasn't the title "Fold.com folds"? WHY?
- itsallgeektome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Uh oh... Time to warm up Web 3.0.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32Wow what a submission whore. Duplicates are what it's all about over here. If people see a story appear several times, they might consider digging it once it shows up again. Plus, there may be a time when the original submission may not be appropriate for any given list of reasons. For example, maybe the title is misleading, or the description isn't solid enough (or it might be TOO descriptive). Thus, people not digging your article shouldn't really be seen as offensive, but I will say that coming into a dupe post and telling people to digg yours is hardly admirable.
Thus, I'll digg this article up and I'll digg your comment down just as dhuck did.
Oh and for those of you modding this post down, I dont care. I just tried to state a reasonable explanation for what seems to be a fairly popular reaction to the post I replied to. - dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -19/+41uh, no. i'll digg this one and digg you down. thanks for trying.
- iDealL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19For those who don't know, fold.com was a Web 2.0-based AJAX website which let users set up their own internet "desktop," similar to what Microsoft and Google are offering.
I never really liked it, but am a little sad to see it go. Thanks for the news. - doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Did the submitter mean 'not to be the LAST'?
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Heh, that'll come in in about 4 or 5 years. Now is the time for the Bubble 2.0 to burst.
- aptget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Bubble 2.0!
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The primary problem with Fold was that it didn't offer anything that we didn't already have. Having weather, a notepad, and a search function on my homepage has been available to me for years. When will developers learn that giving users the same old functionality with an (arguably) prettier interface doesn't impress people?
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12someone shoud probably trademark/copyright 'Web 3.0' before O'Reilly does...
- baraqiyal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You can see screenshots of the former fold.com here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/foldscreenshot/
It looked pretty cool, although I'm trying to think of a practical use of a web browser inside of a web browser. I'm sure I'm mising something. - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I guess Im the only one who doesnt know who the hell fold.com is?
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, it should have been "Fold.com lives up to name".
Regardless of that actually being funnier than your line, I agree - what an opportunity missed! - eradicator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6More Kool-Aid Man shirts! "Web 3.0h, YEAAHH!!"
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How much do you think the domain name is worth?
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm thinking around 500-600k.. ?
http://dnjournal.com/ytd-sales-charts.htm reported "blue.com" to be 500,000 and as the owner of the domain says, the price should be simular. - 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Digg for irony.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for "Not to be the first."
I laughed for a while there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2good domain name for a poker site.
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4thank god someone decided to explain it. I got nothing from the link. The only AJAX I know of is that bathroom cleaning powder. hahahah
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's a lot! especially as blue.com isn't even doing anything... who has that much money to throw around!
- fohf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for the info, I never heard of fold.com so I can't say I am sad or will miss it.
- reldren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Serves all these idiot VCs right for not learning their lessons the first time. Retards.
- kuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's other examples of desktop AJAX environments:
http://www.netvibes.com and http://www.pageflakes.com/ - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's only worth what somebody will pay for it. And now that the name is jinxed... I would be surprised to see it go for a half a million dollars anytime soon.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone wanna take bets on who goes down next (that was a joke)
- esaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never saw what feed.com looked like until those screenshots and that looked like the most redundant ap ever. Netvibes got the problem as well as the answer right.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1probably american express.. and they probably just bought the domain so noone can use it to say bad things about them..
either that or the blue man group. - liquidcoooled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have found digg fills a void lots of other sites cannot.
It is my aggregator of articles from lots of places.
It saves me time trawling through different places to find random crap.
Its not taken over slashdot in my eyes and I doubt it ever will. - xswag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think Netvibes will be the next to go actually.
- fquednau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know what fold was able to do, but netvibes allows me to have my newsfeeds with me all the time, i.e. in the office, at home, or at a client's PC. Although it does have some drawbacks compared to a stationary feedreader, having it inside a browser is a superb advantage.
- bryanl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what will happen to the code? The owners could open source it, and let the community have at it.
- TheOneGreatX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It should've been, it should've been.
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll just say the competition between these Web 2.0 companies for users is getting more intense as more companies come to market. Meanwhile, the amount of bandwith the individual has to check out all these sites and evaluate them stays the same. I really only have time to regularly use about 5 sites daily (digg is becoming one of them) and I sit in front of a computer the majority of my waking hours. Most sites I check out once and never return. I can't even remember the names of many Web 2.0 sites and what they do to even get to the point of checking them out... (meedo? Rumbio? huh?)
- midlifecrisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems they are now a company that sells http://www.fold.com Barcode Software.
- def1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Have you seen Purple? Unique site, but if I could get $500,000 for it, I would.
http://www.purple.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Well you are here.. so what does that say about you?
I personally am an unapologetic non self-hating digg user. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2this post has a better descriptionunder the title
"Fold.com, an Ajax home page, has folded. Closed, shut down, done. The domain is now parked and ready to be fold..err... sold."
this looks like something i wrote,, too many punctuations, and non sentences.. I am not an eglish major nor do i complain alot about descriptions buti bet even subconciously people are more likely to digg stuff written well, then stuff written as good as i right. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Digging koregaonpark down for posting a duplicate notice doesn't seem quite right - shouldn't we all also be using the block link by his name? :-)
- xenubaba, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I predict the next would be Pageflakes.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6cause people are sick of reporters spending more time coming up with a witty title, than actually checking facts.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7This was on TechCrunch yesterday. Even Slashdot is quicker now. Digg is the Special Olympics of scraping.
- reldren, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9What do you expect from Digg? It's full of hamheaded *****-eaters.
- aptget, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5Baahhaahhaahhaaaaaaaahhaaa (takes a breath) Baaahhhaaahhhaaahhaaahhaa!
Fold.com folds! Get it? Baaahhaahhhaaaaaaahhh!!!11 - xenubaba, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2cos that's retarded
- lordthor, on 10/12/2007, -26/+9screw you and quit bitching over your submission not hitting the front.
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -29/+4because it's lame
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -109/+17Fine. I'm digging this because I like TechCrunch. And the story reaching the frontpage matters more to me than my ego.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -128/+7This is a duplicate. Please digg the original submission: http://digg.com/technology/Fold.com…Folds
