Look at the second comment, moron. Hong Kong is not controlled by the Chinese government. They have no say what happens here. - poogtastik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hong Kong is not truly a dual-language city. Many (if not most) people here can speak english to some degree, but the vast majority of the citizens would much perfer to speak cantonese and read and write in Chinese. Just because all the signs here are also in English does not mean that a Chinese language flickr site would not be a great tool for many residents here. Plus, if they would rather use an english flickr site, then why wouldn't they just use the American/English version?
Plus, if you're comparing Hong Kong's "dual-languages" to Singapore's "4-language" society, then you are completely wrong, because more people here are more fluent in Mandarin then they are in English, so in reality, Hong Kong is officially a tri-language city, but it's simpler because Mandarin and Cantonese are written with the same system (albeit traditional characters, but that's getting picky).
So, I don't know why you're flipping out over them opening a Hong Kong flickr site. Sounds like a fantastic idea to me. - poogtastik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's awesome. Hong Kong is such a great place to take pictures; it's about time they opened a Chinese version of it.
. - Leicafanboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You lost me when you said "Most of the people here speak great English..."
I'm an ex-Hong Konger, who still has regular contact with one of the biggest HKer ghetto in North America. It is thoroughly amazing how many Hong Kong people misuse big words to pretend they know English.
If you had said SOME of the people there speak English well... - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hong Kong seems like a pretty silly place to target a Chinese language web site. Taiwan or China yes, but Hong Kong??? I wonder which part of "Hong Kong has two official languages" it is that the flickr/yahoo people aren't understanding. Surely a dual-language site with a little En/Cn link somewhere is the way to go? You know, like all the HK Government web sites!
Boy are they going to be confused when they try to tackle Singapore and her four official languages!
(I love travelling in in Singapore and Hong Kong. I can now say "Be careful of the closing doors" in Cantonese, Mandarin, Tamil, Malay and that bizarre sing-song English that the recording on the HK MTR uses. Japanese too if you add in Tokyo! Here in Sydney, Australia it's just a mumbled, over-volumed and clipping "DOORSCLOSINSTANCLEAH"!) - h0f5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1art is universal and transcends the boundaries of languages... there really isnt a need for another site..
and besides, im quite sure that by now most hong kong citizens ( at least those who will go to a site like flickr ) know basic english. - alamko1999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I bet the Canadian born Chinese would love this. And i hope they beat the hompy market coz this hompy sites do not display properly on other browser rather than IE which made my job sucks (i make hompy site and my boss doesnt care about other browser)
- chilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you and your ignorant westernised view of asia does no't matter to anyone. At least do some research before posting.
- chilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah... I love how these people think they rock being able to make sense of a few foreign words, yet detest people who speaks perfect english with a slightly different accent.
I've read this guys post like over 3 times now and I still can't make out what he's trying to say. Speaking of bad communication skill... sigh.
"Japanese too if you add in Tokyo!" - eh? - cruxed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah exactly, I'm from hong kong and I've been using flickr for a year or so.
Most of the people here speak great English and have little to no problems understanding basic words such as "Your Photos" and "tag".
A chinese version of flickr would be more suitable for the China and Taiwan market, where English is less mainstream. - fadeout, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I think it should be pointed out that Yahoo owns Flickr.
Yahoo's reputation for rolling over to the Chinese governments demands is pretty well known. - goodbeershow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1How do you Flickr in Engrish?
- linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I can see the whole site getting owned by the government quite a few times. I would love to see their picture uploading policy.
- btnheazy03, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Good luck having the Chinese upload their pictures without their government's interference
