- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone notice what it says at the bottom of the home page? Hilarious.
"Flash Earth uses satellite and aerial imagery from Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth without permission" - lefragileebouy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the zoom is really slow for me :/ earth is the king
- tuneshark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neat idea. Keep working on it.
If you want to compare it to GE, though, it needs to at least allow tilting of the image plane and incorporate some kind of perspective and elevation data. Otherwise, it's just google maps implemented in flash minus some of the features.
Need street overlays, directions and "here to there" plotting to be truly useful. Does it really load images any faster than the Google Maps web pages? Doesn't seem like it.
Mouse wheel is implemented backwards (Rolling away from you should zoom out - Rolling towards you should zoom in. This works opposite) - capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@trekkie.... nobody cares about "lots of cool web apps" because that title is submitted every damn day. They do care about Google Earth in a web browser. Learn to write an interesting title to your article and maybe people will digg your stuff. This article is not a dupe.
- equark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is significantly better than all this ajax fluff.
- ianan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1fantastic
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i forgot to mention the only reason i like flash earth:
it makes it easy to compare google's service with msn's service, and google generally always kicks msn to the curb with my tests. msn is good for a few areas, but google has far more coverage and far more high res imagery.. not to mention that google's driving directions blow msn away - canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool
- luckyschop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a very old duplicate story... which has already been established. plus, you must be a moron to think that this is equivalent to google earth... it is a flat map and that's all you can do with it. ergo, it is flash-based google maps.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for Paul Neave.
- sanket21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1better .. a lot better .. i like it more than google maps...
somhow i hav started liking Flash these days .. they are being used in a more better way these days .. - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this gets an innaccurate from me too! This is NOT Google Earth, it's Google MAPS. . . I am always curious why people would think flash is better than the FASTER Google version with more features anyway...
- bem1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, we all do not prefer google mikeazorin.....
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like the idea but... it needs alot of work.
[by the way, how do you enter a place and have FlashEarth find it?] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dude no ***** digg!
- simpleSoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is freakin cool as hell.
- Virverum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eh slow but awesome. And yeah I got the 1000th digg. 5//337.
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quit calling this Google Earth in your browser. Google Earth is 3D. i.e. elevation maps and you can zoom around at different angles. This is just a Flash based Google Maps.. which is cool on its own but get it right. Earned an inaccurate from me.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pretty neat...
- jasongetsdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The "Link to this location" button is key.
- sarahb459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty cool, but anyone notice that the image is at least a year old??? How about something more up to date for us stalker types? ; )
- 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0killer! Digg!
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is far better than MSN.
I mean MSN doesn't even have my favorite little rock: http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=64.96948&lon=-168.064327&z=13.4&r=0&src=0 - iantot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no question, GE still moves me
- rekka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I was really hoping for the google earth 3d stuff. Don't want to install google earth just to get that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah that dupe call is a bit iffy....
- Diseage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0local.live.com definetly rocks this in the face
- andrethegiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kinda old. and also its not anything like google earth, it's just google maps, which can already run in your browser. if it could go 3D, like google earth, then we're talking...
- behemothaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dupe de doo - from a loong time ago though so dugg cause still cool...
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kinda digg, but it's not as fast as GE...
Hello, my name is Zach and I'm not switching. - Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no dig...this is not google EARTH maps, but is google maps, maps. They use different sat images, google earth seems to be updated more.
- princ3jah, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0I prefer Google Earth, but browserlike, nothing beats Virtual Earth ? There is a Plugin for IE and for Firefox.
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In this episode of Google vs. Microsoft we have a tie. The aerial photography that both companies use for these products is the same except that Microsoft applies some sharpening to theirs. I just per fer Google's product because I can run it locally on my Computer for free and save place marks.
- Flipino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't what I had expected (a true Google Earth-like experience w/ 3d shapes, fading labels, etc)
But it was still fascinating nonetheless b/c my area has a fairly recent Google map but a very outdated MSN map (by about 15 years), so it was fun comparing the two. Ah, memories... - Friedbeef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not everyone is on digg every hour of everyday, so while this is a dupe, I am very grateful for it being reposted, as it is extremely cool. To the dupe haters, just dont read that particular article and move on to the next story please.
- xianpryde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is easily the coolest site I've seen so far today. True, it's not even 6am yet, but still... (I didn't know it was a dupe, and I'm glad it's here. Otherwise I would have missed it.) The great thing is being able to compare the Microsoft versus Google imagery. Unkown to some, there are actually some places where Google and MS are using the EXACT same image. For example, you can see the cars on the freeway being in the same location (I'm talking about near Apple HQ in Cupertino, for example). You can see that they've used some different post-processing on the image, however. Like different degrees of sharpening and JPEGing.
- thejimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Something funny... MSN's satellite photos show black and white images of where my house should be, and my house isn't there, along with the whole neighborhood having not been built. Google's photos are quite a bit newer!
- CrookedAsterisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this a joke? Do you know how old this is? Plus it's a duplicate:
http://digg.com/technology/Google_Maps_MSN_Visual_Earth_Flash_=_FlashEarth
Search a bit harder next time. By the way, FlashEarth: it's awesome. - ZenWarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree with everything luckyschop noted by. Why in the world would someone use that over bona fide Google Earth? If someone thinks that's cool, they must not have ever used the real Google Earth.
The flash version is not smoother (far from it), the zoom works poorly, it's not as simple to use, does not have very many [any?] options, and the imagery resolution is very lacking compared to the real deal. It's nice to see someone has attempted it with Flash, but they didn't even do a decent job of reinventing that particular wheel. Flash has exceptional these days potential, but that site does not begin to tap into it.
I no digg. - Ollekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old, but still a digg
- piki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is seriously sweet
+digg - furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+inaccurate because i prefer local.live.com (virtual earth).
it looks better.
it has birds eye view photos.
it scrolls smoothly
it uses the mouse wheel and right click.
its better dispite everyone obsession with everhything google. - flashmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a nice case study for AJAX vs Flash vs a standalone application.
p.s. I'm sick of reading comments like: "DUPE!!!!" or "No digg." or "You met my requirement for a digg"
Nobody really cares what you personally digg or do not digg, and if a story is actually a dupe, but has a better written title and description than a lame original, then I think it deserves to be on the home page.
Go ahead and flame this, flamers! - justdarick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For Atlanta, the Google and MSN images are EXACTLY the same, except MSN retouched them and they are easier to view (Googles are really dark!).
It's interesting way to do it so that you can see these things. - Double-Z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not anything like Google Earth. It's more like Google maps, but with less functionality.
No digg. - Friedbeef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flashmaster I agree.... what I do is I block/report all comments from people like that... the comments I now see on screen now, have much more value add than "DUPE!!!"
- dwbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google earth for linux!
- graywave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd forgotten about this
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's now updated with Google Local's latest imagery to match Google Earth: http://www.flashearth.com/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0me likey bouncey
