5. Underwear
4. Toilet Paper
3. Diapers
2. Syringes
1. Condoms - Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was this guy related to Kevin Pereira? He was almost as annoying.
I have 3 kids. I'd have to say that "hand-me-downs" are one thing, but I'm not big on buying "Used clothes" for my kids. And I'm not looking for most toys for them at garage sales, BUT there's some validity there. Look at the room he was in. Those big plastic Fisher Price playsets are an easy pickup at garage sales and certainly better than paying $100-$200 for them. Same thing for bikes, sand boxes and stuff. The assortment of toys and crap that get left in the yard make it hard to want to shell out money for new items that will be trashed in no time at all. Save some money there and spend it on things that your kids would REALLY want and need.
As for cars... he has a point. Homes? Well.. not in this market. You get what you can before the costs of them rise out of reach (if it hasn't for you already). - Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The voice of that guy reminded me of the voice of the guy who is on infomercials and wears all of the question marks."
I was just going to post that. Matthew Lesko is his name. - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dear God, that guy is annoying!
- danielson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The voice of that guy reminded me of the voice of the guy who is on infomercials and wears all of the question marks.
- majik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was just about to say the same thing as danielson.
- acr2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sort of agree with him, but overall that entire piece was a bunch of CRAP. No one should buy theyre kids used clothes or toys unless they are POOR. I also agree with mikeallen about new houses. Also, you might be paying more to build a house, BUT THATS THE POINT! you're moving into a custom, new, never before used house! That SHOULD be more money. Its like telling people to buy a toyota instead of a porsche to save money. Everyone knows that, and its not really a tip!
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was referrring to whitesanjuro's post
- mikeallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also, depending on the housing market your in, such as the one i'm in, it's actually cheaper to build than to buy. people just don't want to wait for 6-8 months for the build to finish.
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i avoid buying used CD/DVDs because they are often in poor condition, as stated by previous diggers. also, many times the cases, extras are also damaged/missing. worst of all, you need to wait for new releases to filter through, so if you only buy used, you are often waiting long amounts of extra time.
- stargirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I buy used clothes for my son who's 7 all the time. it's not about being cheap it's about being smart. maybe most people think if its used it must be stained or just ugly in general and they have the money to go out and spend $20 on just one item. In most cases clothes are in very good condition. I could always just go to walmart and get clothes for about the same price as used stuff, But why by cheaply made items when you can get better brands used? as for toys I normally get stuff on clearance if I do get stuff used it's because my son asks me to get it. I wont get shoes, socks, or underwear used unless they are still brand new (which is possible) I have been known to buy used CLOTH diapers off of ebay that said I am expecting negative remarks on that but oh well.
For each person knows what is more important for them maybe it's buying everything new for others it's having credit card debt. - wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ eclectro
I wouldn't put it past them, but is there any proof of this? I always here it, but it just sounds like conspiracy ranting. Just curious if there is anything to back that statement up. - Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get a kid and then we'll talk. They are in clothes for a minute before it's to small. So those "used" outfits have been worn 5 - 6 times.
- chrstphrbrwn, on 04/15/2009, -0/+0I just tear up at the glimmer in Johnny's eye when Mom or Dad bring home a ... USED BEAT UP TOY. Sure it makes sense to your pocket book, but it won't make sense to your kid that (s)he gets used ***** while their friends get to open brand new items with which to play.
Also, used CDs/DVDs are often scratched up and full of nasty funk. Sometimes, paying the few extra dollars is worth buying new.
For the most part, I can agree with this guy, but there are just some things and occassions upon which you don't want to skimp. - dstanich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02 or 3 year old cars? When people sell a new car after 2 years they usually have had problems with it. He's suggesting buying other people's problems?
Buying from private sellers saves a lot though, good idea. - ryan00davis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont know about you, but when i buy a used car, i prefer to get it from a dealer, if something goes wrong with it, you know exactly who to go to. and you can assume (for the most part anyways) that a mechanic has looked over it, and they arent going to sell you too much of a piece of crap.
- uglyredhonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People shouldn't be so appalled at the idea of buying used toys.
My nephew recently fell in love with Ghostbusters (the movie). Well, granted that they haven't made Ghostbusters toys since the 80s (save for some retread thing in the 90s), his parents decided to buy some used Ghostbusters toys off of Ebay.
Kid went BEZERK. Absolutely loved them. Sure, they were a little beaten, but they were exactly what he wanted. And he didn't give a rats' ass if they were old or new. The rest of the family got him all kinds of new toys, but the old Ghostbusters toys were the hit of the day.
If we're talking pre-school age kid, I wouldn't hesitate to buy used, as long as the toys are cool and in good shape. Older than that, and their tastes start to be become a little too specific for used toys to work. - maddog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cars, House, Kid's Stuff, Music Instruments, Cd's & DVDs
I agree in most of the stuff, but COME ON'!, the guy actually suggests to buy USED cloth and toys for your child. maybe is just me, I'm no parent yet BUT come on' used cloth for your 4 year old? that's just being a cheap bastard.
Unless you are reaaaaaaaally struggling with money, buy the kid new stuff. geeeezz. - some_guy22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well i dont think that this piece was digg worthy cus of the simple fact that most of it is common sense, i dunno bout the clothes though and the toys.
- HellGnome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And the Douche Bag of the Century Goes to...
- priapos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy is on drugs. New construction very often costs LESS than old. Right now I'm typing this from my brand new 6000 sq foot house on an acre 1/2 in a high end community where half that goes for roughly 500k. I built the entire house for just over 350k including land and everything else. My house is currently worth 1.5 million. And no, it doesn't take months. More like weeks if you are smart and use a solid prefab company.
- maddog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Punisher2K, I'm not buying my child USED cloth. that's just sad and cheap. While I'm enjoying digital cable TV, premium channels, fast high speed broadband connection, a hell of cellphone plan, etc, etc,etc all those stupid "comfort" things that nowadays are very normal to have in every house, I'm not letting my child wear USED cloth. Maybe is just me, but my child is worth more for me than all that. Unless you are plain POOR, buy the kid new cloth. About toys, well it depends, but clothing.
unless is given to you by a relative or close friend. - stargirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maddog,
I guess your just rolling in the dough aren't you. just wait till you have a kid and then decide if it's more important for you to work lots of overtime so you can afford those "common comforts" as well as buy all those expensive clothes and toys for your child. - andyman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So when is digg going to add a "***** duh" category? :p
I agree with everything except possibly the kids stuff and CDs/DVDs.
Getting used kids stuff like the fisher price crap in the video makes sense. If you have some family friends with kids of their own, now grown up, getting baby and kid clothes from them also makes a bunch of sense. Heading down to the thrift store to buy little Timmy a pair of pants? Not so much sense.
As for CDs/DVDs, that makes a bunch of sense as long as you take care to check the quality before you buy. Nothing worse than thinking you've saved money to come home to a scratched CD that wont play.
And as for new releases, if you're the type of person that thinks the new crap out today is actually worth paying for, you're the same type gullible enough to pay retail prices for it. - Rhomboid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: clothes
Now, obviously once your kids hit 9 or 10 or thereabouts they will start to care about their clothes and not want used stuff. But when they're young they couldn't give a damn what brand it is or if it's been worn a few times. During those young years is when they're growing fastest and so you'll be buying the most clothes for them. It also means the used clothes you buy will be hardly worn. It's not being cheap, it's being smart, as another poster said. Take all the money you save on new clothes when they're toddlers and invest it and buy them a car when they're 16. I don't think there's a kid out there that would disagree with your decision. Naturally you won't go buying dirty or nasty clothes or anything, it's got to be in excellent shape.
Re: cars
Someone said "if you buy a car from a dealer you know a mechanic has looked at it." Well, DUH! That's why you pay a private mechanic $50 to check out any car you are about to buy from a private party. Everyone knows that. The dealer offers you nothing in that situation. The same for the case of "if something goes wrong you have someone to take it to." Again, DUH! If you do have problems with a used car that you privately bought, you just take it to a mechanic and have it fixed. Either way if the car has a problem it will need to be fixed, the only difference is by paying a dealer for a used car you are guaranteeing that you're going to pay for that privilege regardless of if you need it or not. The money you save buying private will make up for any minor repairs that might have to be made. And most of the time if you're buying a car that's less than 5 years old there will rarely be much that can go wrong. That business about "2 year old cars were sold because they had problems" is pure BS too. There are lots of fools out there that HAVE to have a new car every 2 to 3 years, and they lease. Those are the cars you are buying, and they're usually in perfect shape. Besides, if the car does have problems that's why you have a mechanic do a thorough check before buying. Getting a used car from a dealer is just throwing money away.
Re: CDs
Yeah they're cheaper, but only if you don't care about new releases. Though most stores that sell used CDs also have a return policy if they don't play - and if yours doesn't find a store that does. That way you don't have to worry about scratches. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL! Just another loser sitting down and writing crap like this.. he probably is fade up with his life, not being able to afford anything new.
Anyhow.. i agree with "wormdrink" comment here. - BoltSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A 2 or 3 year old car is probably coming off a lease. I bought a 2 year old car last year that was in excellent condition, you can't tell it from a new car and I saved big money. Good idea there. I agree with stargirl, used children's clothing is not a problem, you shop smart and I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference. It's not like you are going to buy a pair of pants with a big stain on it. Saving a few dollars per item will add up quickly and allow you to pass on more to your child than just brand new clothing.
- petestv, on 03/06/2009, -0/+0A used musical instrument is a good idea, founded some at http://www.artistsmusicians.com/blog as well as some recommendations on how to tune them
- mikeallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah i don't have any money problems, but i still happily accept hand-me-downs for my kid. it's probably been worn like 3 times and he'll only be in it for a month before he's done and it goes to the next kid. don't get me wrong, i still buy plenty of new clothes for him but the used come in handy when everything else is dirty.
- showstoppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I buy used clothes for myself sometime, so I don't see any problem with buying used for my kids when I have them. Especially since you can go to garage sales and find tables and tables full of almost new kids clothes for 50 cents a piece because their kid grew out of them quickly. And as long as the toys are in good condition, I'd buy those too. I buy some of my own toys at garage sales. You can find alot of cool stuff if you go garage saleing or thrift store shopping. It's especially nice to find a few NES games that I don't have yet.
- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather clothe my kid used then clothe my kid from Wal Mart.
- ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ebay is a great place to buy used CDs. The last CD I bought off ebay cost me a whole $1.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wwormdrink ---> absolutely for 100% true fer-sure. Businessweek profiled one company a couple of years ago that does nothing but post their views (the "industry's" or whoever they whore out to) on popular forums, such as digg is becoming. I saved the article on another hard disk. I think I can dig it out.
It was jaw dropping for me with its slimy implications. At the time I submitted it to slashdot, but they ignored me. That's where digg is much better :-)
Look at whitesanjuro's post again. Doesn't that sound like something the RIAA would say? I buy a lot of used CD's, and the one time I got a bad used CD the store gave me my money back. The other time it was so cheap $1-$3 that I didn't care. And I can always see if extras are missing or not. Even on ebay you have the choice of emailing the seller or only buy those with good pics. I have never gotten a bad used CD off ebay. Another thought -- how slimy do you think the RIAA is? - remember, they sue grandmas and twelve year olds. - DanH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0someone needs to give this guy a sedative.
He is right about CDs though. - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i didn't realize that buying the latest boom bip album at their concert or importing kill bill vol 1 from japan meant i was a clear channel whore
- whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, i can't believe im being flamed for having the opinion that buying used CDs/DVDs means they are already more worn and not current. FYI, im not an RIAA/MPAA shill, i just don't like to buy ***** other people glooped on because i'm weird like that. sorry that the fact that i try to support artists i like bothers you so much.
- wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, until I see it, I remain skeptical. And yes, these people stating, "Used cddvd's are scratched" just sound like ignorant consumers. EVERY used CD place will let you return a scratched disk. I have never had any issues buying used, and doubt I ever will. I just get a little worn thin on the RIAA is evil stuff. They're just trying to get more cash like every other industry in America. And we all know they will do anything to get more cash. It just sucks when lies get mixed in with the truely evil things they do, because then people like you and I sound like conspiracy nuts. That's why I need a source, so I can go, "See! They're bastards!"
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obviously if you have the money it's better to buy everything new. He's just saying that these are the things that don't make a huge difference if they happen to be used.
You're not going to go rooting through a dumpster here. Why do people assume that used childrens clothing are going to be dirty or soiled? Go to value village or something. All their stuff is used and it looks just fine. The reason it doesn't make a huge difference is that young children (1-6 years) probably don't care about having the coolest clothing. With kids clothes, you could also just buy them new at discount stores. You'll still save money and it's still new. Best of both worlds.
I completely agree with the CDs and DVDs. Occasionally you will get some disgustingly scratched and mutilated discs, but that has happened maybe once out of a hundred times for me. - sknits4g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vatco-
FYI Clark Howard is super rich and is considered a consumer god in Atlanta. He is really a great guy and gives great advice.
I guess he can't help his voice, but don't miss the message. - wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, Howard rules. One of the few good AM radio shows that is non-political. This is a bad example of him though. This is TV fluff. His good info on investing and home buying and scams are all on AM.
- tball, on 06/23/2008, -0/+0definitely agree on buying a used car instead of new. i'm on my 3rd used car and have used the web to find all of them. one site i would recommend is that of http://www.iseecars.com which lets you search used car listings across many websites
- ballistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe that people would assume sanjuro was a slimy RIAA front man...I mean...look at the stories he has posted and diggs. I got off /. because of this type of ignorance and self-serving flaming.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^^^^Brought to you by the voice of the RIAA. I only buy used CDs exclusively on principle ALONE. The really do hire people to browse forums and post to get their view accross.
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0OK so is this really Digg worthy?

What is Digg?
