- cscully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23I figured that "Bill Gates Doesn't Want to Be Richest Man" would have been in there
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Congrats, you're in the small percentage of companies. How many jobs have you worked for where even one of these was a lie?
- fogbog293, on 02/10/2009, -0/+20http://www.despair.com/nepotism.html
- RealSurreal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15yeah that customer first thing is crap, we love you until you sign our two year contract then we don't have to do crap because your trapped. So we can now move on to the next sucker. People are not dumb they know and respect companies that give them good service and treat them right, if your a business man reading this don't be stupid treat people right and you will get more recommendations and more money in the end if you are smart about customer service.
Sadly more and more companies ***** on the customer the ones that survive are the ones that have respect for the customers since hey what an idea they are the ones that give you money.... sorry I was ranting pissed about a cellphone company i was dealing with today - jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23That article is BS. If your employer lies about any one of those things you may want to rethink your career choice. I work at a place where all of those "lies" are not lies, and it's the best job I have ever had.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think you're being quite naive to think your experience (if it truly is your experience and is not due to the fact that you might not actually interact with the CEO/CFO/or COO on a daily basis) is a common one.
- briareus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You don't need to rethink your career choice if you work for a crap company. You need to rethink your employer choice (two very different things).
I don't know if jtrost and netwookiee are just drinking the company Kool Aid or not but this article definitely applies to the majority of companies out there. If you're lucky enough that it doesn't, that's awesome. It doesn't, however, mean that the article is crap. - cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I have worked at a company that spouted each and every one of these, along with many, many more. Every one of them was a lie, and they were blatant in their disregard. The 'core values' were chanted like a mantra and everybody was FORCED to learn them and to live by them on pain of death (well, firing). It's amazing how often somebody unpopular with the management disappeared for 'not keeping to the company values'.
I am at a company where none of these are lies. I'm quite happy here. The job isn't quite what I was after, but the fact that I get paid a reasonably amount at a company that's good to work for make up for it. I could get the job of my dreams, but it may be with the employer from hell ... - cebailey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Dugg, just because they just put a big sign up at work about how "Your Voice is Our Strength," and I'm not buying it.
- JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Everything is a lie and that's a fact.
- ZigZags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just like the old saying, "There's no I in team, but there is me"
I'd say this article is mostly true. Let's face it, all employer's/management lie. As soon as we had a meeting where the importance of people, and our "great team" was the emphasis... 2 meetings later pay cuts and a firing... coincidence?
That last bit where we ignore customers when we can get away with it pretty much says it all.
+dugged - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Company I work for has a mission statement that says:
"People are the number one contributor to our ongoing success."
that just means if there were no people there would be no customers, workers, product etc. it's a very worthless statement. - Platypus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As I've had occasion to point out a few times at work, there's no "I" in "team" but there's one in "bite me"
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Most times mass layoffs are NOT based on performace, they're based on financial reasons...something very few employees understand.
- TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There are many companies that respect their employees but more often than not they'll use you and then toss you to the side after they suck you dry.
- mrmatchgame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Lie #6: 9 to 5.
- crazyc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Actually the companies that survive, are the ones that give good service to the customers who are profitable, and ignore the customers that are just there for a free meal : )
- ERSWeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4eh, mileage may vary. I think most of these describe basic human nature not some sort of malicious lie. If anything they are lies that we make ourselves believe because we don't want to face the harsh reality that "who you know" has as much to do with success as "what you know".
- sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More to do. I've known plenty of retards that got jobs that I was infinitely more qualified for, just because they knew more people higher up than I did. Oh the days when I wish I were female, so much easier when sleeping to the top, though degrading, is an option..... (for the record, I'm kidding, no feminazis attack me, please)
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Right on.
- The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4eh, beyond bureaucratic organizations, society is full of "useful lies". Heck, it's kinda based on them.
- Opiate, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Bury this all you want he does have a point. While reading the article I couldn't help but shake my head. Yes there are companies that behave like so but not always the case like my employer.. It's just a baseless article spewing prejudices so that the anti-corporate types will jump in joy.
- EPeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46th most common lie in business: I totally had sex with (fill the the blank) from accounting. Ha!
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Your logic is flawless.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lie number 7(for most companies)..."We are more than happy to compensate you for any additional time."
Truth: We might pay you any over time unless we snuck a clause in your contract that says we don't have to, or our legal team has a plan to get us out of having to pay you.
B.S. Detector: "We've got payroll looking into it, but can you do this for me real fast" AKA - Were hopping to put if off and burry you in more work so it slips your mind. - doctar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or how about "promoting you," making you a salaried employee. When in fact you're doing the same damn job with more responsibilities, meaning more crap you'd rather not do. And you find out the other crap takes more time to do, so you have to do overtime with no overtime pay because you're now a salaried employee, therefore wiping out any raise you may have gotten. And in fact you may be doing more work for less pay because of all the extra hours you have to put into the "new" job now. Which means that "promotion" wasn't much of one to begin with.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Watch out for 3 and 4, or you'll have to spend some time pulling knives out of your own back...
- nuvem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Even though I've never been in a management position, I have had coworkers, so I can completely agree. There are a lot of people who take advantage of anything and everything they can, and more or less ruin it for everyone else (humanity in an nutshell).
Too bad there's no way in hell you can tell your boss about it. - Daem0nX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting read, and mostly true looking back on previous jobs. I'd be interested in seeing where "We can't afford to give you a raise" is in the lies list.
- dpotter2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And the truth will set you free.
Dugg! - cybe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Highly recommended documentary: http://www.thecorporation.com/
- blacklilyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3but would it change anything knowing this? no... people will continue to function under the illusion because they need it.
- Doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We got the signs that say Total Customer Experience....
too funny - justok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sounds like someone enjoyed the company kool-aid.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used to work in a place like that. Now I work in a place that says those things, but actually means it.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3has anyone heard the "our company is expanding" one?
- MrShoop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"People are our most important asset"
It may be a lie because execs don't believe it when they say it, but it is true. Unless you are a company like NTP that buys other peopels patents and sues companies. Then you most important asset is your law firm. Or if you are a company like EA that just plugs in drones to do licensed games, then your most imporatant asset is your NFL license. But still, overall, "People are our most important asset," is true for most companies. - mshaw2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It seems that peoples experiences are all the same, regardless of where they live and what they do for a living. I read http://www.officewhisper.com which has stories about work that I can relate to. Although sometimes its kinda sad to realize that there is no 'better place' to work out there...
- slimshady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I work at ups(united pieces of *****), and they don't care about you or they customers, they only care about money. This story is so true.
- sanza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow. Someone certainly is bitter...
- scheptech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2#1 corporate delusion: A Company Is Like A Family - I guess as mentioned above people need this sort of thing and (some, many?) managers are sufficiently amoral to just tell 'em what they want to hear...
- Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Best site ever... halarious.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Judging by people's reactions and comparisons to their current situations, it appears that the age of the article has no effect on whether or not it rings true.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"We're looking for a team player"
truth: too bad you're not on our team, kekekeke.
BS: um, idunno, people are full of *****. - sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So that's why the new manager slowly fired off everyone in the department that was there before his arrival and suddenly, when I'm making the company something like $100/hour on average, when they're only paying me $10.25/hour, and next thing I know I'm going on 4 months without work in this jobless area. It's always personal. Yes they're going to go after the ones that aren't performing quite as well first, but in the end, it's personal, they'll fire who they don't like.
- GoNoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brilliant site! I have this one hanging on my wall: http://www.despair.com/sacrifice.html
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've often felt that people in the corporate environment need to grow the ***** up. Was this not the point of the article?
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They left out: "We are fully committed to diversity."
Its a little tough to swallow when your CEO is a member of a restricted country club. -
