- ThsGuyRightHere, on 11/23/2008, -4/+29Good stuff but I rarely even see my desktop. When I'm working it's not uncommon for me to have 15-20 windows open with one of them being chrome or firefox with a dozen tabs open.
- ishkabum, on 11/24/2008, -0/+10some HOT DESKTOP, undoubtedly.
IT COULD BE YOURS! CLICK HERE! - smergs, on 11/24/2008, -3/+13Not sure why Wingman187 is being dugg down. Nothing in the title or section that the story was submitted to says that this is only for Windows. I think he was asking a valid question. Maybe he wants to customize the appearance of his Mac's desktop and is just looking for a solution.
- grungegbunny, on 11/24/2008, -3/+12Compiz Fusion
- darny, on 11/24/2008, -0/+7what is that supposed to be a picture of?
- techdever, on 11/24/2008, -1/+7properly configured rocketdock FTW!
- matrix121, on 11/24/2008, -1/+7Objectdock works pretty well too.
- JohnFlux, on 11/24/2008, -3/+8Buried for not knowing what a PC is
- NathanielJ, on 11/24/2008, -0/+4@irishjays - Apple was the one that started using the term PC to refer to computers that run Windows, so talk to them about it.
- irishjays, on 11/24/2008, -3/+7I'm not even sure what your talking about. A PC is a personal computer, it runs 'operating systems' three of which are easily noted, one of which is categorized. Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Now, if you are saying PC and referring to Windows operating system, you are obviously missing out. Linux GUI is created and manipulated however you'd like, it is limitless and if you have the time, you can make it behave however you'd like. Windows and Mac need 3rd party software to manipulate the theme of the desktop, unlike linux, where you can if wanted change the core of the display elements. Many would argue that Mac OsX is too good to change, and I agree, I actually made my Gnome behave like a mac. Windows, ugg. last time I tried altering my windows themes, XP froze, acted unstable, and it simply wasn't worth it. I'm sure things have changed, but I prefer Linux X and Mac os X
- DetpackJump, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3I think it's the next Ubuntu release: Giddy Goatse
- grungegbunny, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3Or just hold down the mouse wheel :)
- synergye, on 11/24/2008, -1/+4Try MenuMeter for the display of system stats.
- Morghin, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3Same here. I had a beautiful setup going thanks to Rainmeter a year back or so along with Google Desktop. Looked pretty sweet, gave me lots of practical information, but when I use my computer I use actual programs that covers the whole desktop, or I'm not on the computer and have no need for it.
The only "customization" tools I have now is GridMove (quick placement of windows, ***** brilliant) and Launchy (indexes the start menu and other items of your choice so you can click Ctrl + Space and write, for example, 'fir' to launch Firefox). - DeathfireD, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3What about a Compiz Fusion or BERYL program for windows? Anyone know of one or two?
- irishjays, on 11/24/2008, -1/+3Is there a Mac OSx customization tool? I love the look and feel now, but hey, if I can add cool doodads to the edged of my menus and make subtle changes, why not?
- skyroket, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2Why is that amazing? Microsoft takes forever to get anything done. I would know, I've been playing the same stupid ass solitaire game for like 12 years now with only one update for Vista to be able to undo as many moves as you want.
- ch40sBr1ng3r, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2When i used windows i just pirated all the stardock programs, windows blinds, object dock, etc etc....now i just use linux lol. But free alternatives are always good.
- inactive, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2If you are on tiger all you need is UNO.
- Nuhaus, on 11/24/2008, -2/+4Been using Objectdock for at least 5 years. It just works.
Rocketdock is free though so I'm gonna check it out. - ArmedandDWI, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2While Samurize and Rainmeter are great utilities, I'd classify them as System Monitoring Tools way before I'd call them "Desktop Customization Tools".
- TheHayze, on 11/24/2008, -1/+3Been using object dock for about 5 years now, too. Recently made the stretch to purchase it, and it's quite a powerful little dock app. Yeah yeah, computer users like free stuff, but sometimes, the best things in life aren't free. Besides, stardock rocks what with no drm and all that.
I personally run blackbox lean shell, object dock, and rainmeter. Works like a charm. - bytor4232, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Word brotha. Ubuntu running Compiz and Avant Window Navigator. Never been happier. Soo pretty, yet soo customizable.
http://picasaweb.google.com/arthur.johnson/Desktop - erichh, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2What about themes? I thought it would be WindowsBlind in any time, but no. And why?
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Thanks
- gozroth, on 11/24/2008, -1/+3I've been using ObjectDock for about 3 years now (the free version). is there any difference or advantage to using RocketDock? it didn't seem to have anything explicit listed
- fapfaptrain, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1So far, I've been using RocketDock for 9 months. The one con i noticed was when my laptop HD began to collapse on itself due to hibernation problems, RocketDock really slowed down the process of trying to scavenge all my files. Other than that, my experience has been very positive. I have a battery docklet and had a clock docklet at one time, which worked extremely well, and free user-made themes (I had FireEngine for a while, and now the Fender Jazz Bass theme which I've fine-tuned) and icons ( http://rocketdock.com/addons/18287 ) that I swear by.
- MrViklund, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Isn't lifehacker.com about hacking your own life?
- darny, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1I was going to say...it looks quite like that, just from the inside.
- arcman, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Emerge is OK I guess, but I prefer bblean (currently using the bbclean mod).
- HardSide, on 11/24/2008, -1/+2Stylexp does all the needs for me when it comes to customizing my os, especially with the builder, i can change everything. Rainmeter is excellent, however it is very buggy when you play fullscreen games and then log out of it, usually resets the windows to a different size or position, but that is the fault of the skin creator. Sumarize is great, its like 10 apps in one, however not user friendly at all, and it does hog a bit of resource power.
- eliomar, on 11/24/2008, -3/+4Yeah like try to "Beautify" your desktop.
- mrblaack, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Anyone know what desktop software and configuration they are using on the first thumbnail? It doesn't look like any mentioned in the article.
BTW - Thanks for the desktop link Takuro - connieLingus, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1no mention of a full-screen CMD shell?
now that's a power-users ideal desktop - mamboboy, on 11/24/2008, -1/+2a hand grenade
- Takuro, on 11/24/2008, -1/+2Anybody know what the name of that red wallpaper is?
EDIT: Found it for anybody else who's interested:

- rstarr, on 11/24/2008, -1/+2And if you are on Tiger Shapeshifter is pretty incredible.
- kitteylin, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1good stuff
- glenn2041, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1rk launcher is the business. Very low memory footprint and very reliable.
- squigglethecow, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1I do not believe there are any.
- visarya, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1dugg for emerge desktop
- tendonut, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1I use RocketDock. I love having only 5 icons on my desktop and a 22" Widescreen monitor looks amazing with 5 icons and a great background at 1580x1050
- fwertz, on 11/24/2008, -4/+4Love all the comments on the LH post "What about Linux?" "What about Mac?"
I'm a PC, and I can do more than you. - fwertz, on 11/24/2008, -2/+2Cntrl + Alt + L-Click = Orgasm.
