- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18*sudders*
"Uhh.. Ladys and gentlmen, excuse the innterruption, but it appears that the copilots CD has installed a crippling rootkit onto the crafts computer and we will need to re-install the OS. This will require that we shut down all systems on the plane -- this means no more movie. Sorry folks, thanks for your understanding" *engines power down, lights flicker off* - justhim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Just what I want to go through...a mid-air Ctrl Alt Del episode.
- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's cool, I didn't know they had cameras so that they could moniter the outside of the plane. They should make that available for viewing to the passengers. Another one is one looking directly down - I have always wanted to do that.
- loudthing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14this could give a new meaning to the term "blue screen of death"
- xneilj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Apparantly the windows screen is only used for non-critical stuff like the pilot's email.
- stlcadet11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Forget the joysticks... where are the cupholders? You don't want you captain falling asleep on you on that long ass airbus ride cause he has no where to put his coffee.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Thanks for calling us "non-pilots" dorks.... asswipe :D
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10a cockpit with a windows key.. i'll stick to trains ;)
- corkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The pilot should be flying the plane, not checking up on digg :P
- bradr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't really get the joysticks. One's on the right side...one's on the left side. Does the left pilot have to be left handed ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9http://www.airliners.net/open.file/958994/L/
Cupholders are on the outside of the seats! :p - mrlost117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I wonder what the joystick buttons do (anti-terrorism) :)
- redblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Being able to watch a camera feed of below the plane via your seat monitor would be pretty cool. However, I would like to see something kind of like this: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/bmw-shows-airbus-how-to-light-an-airplane-ceiling-161267.php
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Scary. No traditional yoke, etc. I can see it now, pilots are playing Quake on the Windows monitors, one of them bumps the stick mode switch and suddenly the plane is circle strafing the Pentagon.
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7More like trim and the raido tx.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How ironic, I think that pilots are arrogant jerks! And from your post it looks like I'm correct.
Yes – I'm an Aircraft Mechanic - shaun3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No... Any professional pilot can fly from either side. With a traditional yoke your outside hand flies and your inside hand operates the throttle, switches, etc. The new thing is to replace the yoke with a stick and place it to the side of the panel as it opens up the cockpit and allows for more instruments infront of you rather than the side.
- lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This looks like a spaceship, I wonder how long the manual for this thing is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I swear... if I could play quake on that thing...
- Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, because so many of us are regulars on airliners.net
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A sign lights up saying "Please do not press this button again."
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now I know why MS discontinued the Sidewinder.
- snowbooch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6$295 million and no leather! thats some bs
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Windows On a Plane
Might make a good sequel to the upcoming Snakes On a Plane
http://hucksblog.blogspot.com/2005/08/snakes-on-*****-plane.html - superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ha ha, they did that when i landed in JFK, but they turned it off when they realized we weren't comin into the runway straight.... ahh torrential new york downpours.
- AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's with the gray boobs on the center console between the throttle cluster? Could make nice hand rests :)
- icealchemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My father flies A320/1 for US Airways, he told me "too bad u learn to use your left" and "its only a little wrist movement".
So it's not that big of a deal
Also
"they dony show it but your arm rests on an armrest that folds down"
"u basically fly it w/ yur fingers" - plasma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3anybody find the "easy" button? :P
- Raldikuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There's an A380 addon for Flight Sim 2004. On most planes the left hand controls the yoke and the right hand controls the throttle. It really isn't any different than driving with your left hand...only it's power steering on steroids.
- Bucky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe not. They tested the myth on a small private jet, not a large arliner like the A380.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4where does the iPod go again?
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"the GPS on the ECIAS" i doubt that the GPS is on the ECIAS (Engine Indications and Crew Alerting System). Usually it's on the MFD but this is a french product.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2autopilot disconnect is also there.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What I want to know is when can I fly one in a flight simulator game. God knows it's the closest I'll ever get to the real thing.
- XxUNDEROATHxX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4But Does it Run Linux?
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whats with those seats? they look like their from the 80's, come on for the money they should give the Captains better seats, maybe even armrests, leather, pretty disappointing. I mean they have to sit there for hours and hours and its not like they are doing all the flying, they could use a little comfort.
- kashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if that was windows installed.... i'm walking....
- karmadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On Emirates, you can watch the front and bottom cameras anytime during flight, even landing and take off. This feature has been around for a while on some international flights.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cameras like that *aren't* very common place. while it sorta common (at least internationally) to have cameras mounted for passeneger viewing in the cabin, those same feeds are NOT viewable from the cockpit. these camera images being displayed in the cockpit of the A380 are fairly unique and are used to help the pilots taxi such a huge aircraft on small taxiways. the images help them to make sure the undercarriage is properly aligned as they make tight turns etc. the images are not used in the air. i think the only other aircraft that uses this concept is the stretch version of the 777, the 777-300.

http://www.digg.com/technology/The_Office_of_the_World_s_Largest_Airliner - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is sad for Digg, This is very old news....Photos of the cockpit of this jet have been around the internet for months...
- alski707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2for any aviation geeks out there, take a look at this one:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0958994/L/
and please tell me what the big red thing down the bottom with DANGER written on it is? thanks in advance ;) - enigmattic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Airbus hasn't used a yoke since they released the A320. The A300 and A310 both have yokes. The A320, A330, A340 and A380 series all have joysticks.
- wout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2déja vu
- splatnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So do you always have to have a right and left handed crew? I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a right handed copilot taking over in an emergency if he was using the left handed joystick...
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty confident you don't need that many buttons.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Crazy. I saw a picture of the cockpit months ago though.
- srg13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can see why that didn't get dugg... Not a very good title...
- Botond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After takeoff and rotation, we push the autopilot as soon as possible and let the FMS fly the route. It depends on the carrier and when they allow it, but Id say max 10,000 ft and its all on its own. Most actual hand-flying is done on the approach phase, autoland isnt used very often. Even requests like holding are done by the autopilot.
So to answer your question - the sidestick is always used, on shorter flights more and on longer flights less. -
