- tommythetomcat, on 10/12/2007, -13/+149did you just agree with yourself?
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -12/+110I'll digg this one because that title isn't as good.
- netwookiee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+56The idea of "Third World Hackers" comes to mind!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+39There should be a 'if it didn't make frontpage the first time then the second isn't a dupe' rule
- dominolover, on 10/12/2007, -23/+53Agreed with Chris. Make the title better in future and then you'll get my digg.
- conigs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33If it was a front-page dupe, you might get some support. But there are often multiples of the same stories in the queue. The headlines/summaries that attract the most attention get more diggs. It just a way of life.
- eradicator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Where's the hand crank?
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I like how half the pictures are of other laptops - and how the one HP laptop has two Apple stickers on it. (gregmo beat me to that one).
Oh, and I'd pick the green OLPC.
(Does anyone else think OLPC sounds like a Catholic Church? Like Our Lady of Perpetual Computing or something.) - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Fisher Price meets Tangerine iBook.
- technonoob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You shake the piss out of it like those flash lights
- 83457, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21yeah, just like welfare is better than education
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22"It looks like a Speak and Spell" and then "Indeed very speak & spell. It pronounces letters and words as I recall. Mine had one bad key that said "poopus" instead of the letter. My siblings and I would entertain each other by interviewing the machine and getting it to tell us it needed to go "poopus" and "p"."
I just about pissed myself laughing so hard. - gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I like the HP Laptop sitting next to it with the Apple logo stickers on it
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -13/+28Blaa blaa blaa. Dup original who cares? as long as one fights to the top we're really not interested.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Give a man a fish, he eats for a day...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I don't think the segway was ever targeted at 3rd world countries...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I like how deadbaby makes a politically correct stance, and yet, has the name deadbaby.
- rekka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I'm just happy that people in 3rd world countries will be able to join in and be tell able to post how every post is a dupe.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14So *this* is where Apple got the idea for the MacBook keyboard....
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pete/151943889/in/set-72057594143224765/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Thank goodness, 419 scammers wont have to find a kingpin to provide them computer time anymore!
If these suckers find there way out of the 3rd world, there will be a modding frenzy. - warrenfalk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I agree with everybody.
It is bad that the same URL is posted twice because this wastes the time of diggers who digg past the front page.
It is good that we get someone to submit the story with a title that is more appropriate and easier to read
I would like to request a feature to digg that when duplicate URLs are submitted, that instead of creating a new article, alternate names are provided instead - so the article shows up once but with different titles. Then which ever title is clicked more is the one shown first, and only one shown on the front page. - hakluytbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9As the photographer explains and as many guessed: "The 'horns' are directional wifi antennae that cover the usb & audio ports when not in use."
For anyone ^ concerned about the 'devil horns', horns in most parts of the world are seen on animals rather than imaginary beings and are very likely considered just cute... - loginname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://static.flickr.com/45/151943889_60bcc60b83_o.jpg
This laptop looks like it should be running FreeBSD... Check out its devil horns! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8damn dude.. they run Fedora.. that's cool
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19they dumped the idea of the hand crank. they were worried that the third world children would break it and, then, try to eat it.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think the kids who will be using this have far more things to worry about than the feel of the keyboard, and will be grateful for having even one of these things.
- eamon1986, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12No he means those flashlights that you shake to charge the battery.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I just read in Time that they got rid of the hand crank in favor of a detachable foot pedal.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well, I assume the port covers act as Wi-Fi antennas as well. Otherwise, I have no idea why they would make the covers look so unbelievably silly.
- envy860, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10hmmmmmmm. glossy screen and macbook looking keyboard.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Laughable? Unless you live with little-or-no electricity, have a dirt floor and ***** next to the tree behind your tin hut, you're not the market to which this laptop is directed. Laugh all you want...and when you're done, answer this:
What exactly have YOU done to help humanity? - humblepatience, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11indeed, where the frick is the frickin hand crank
i wish my laptop had one! - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Looks damn fine for a hundred bucks, keep up the good work MIT guys.
- matthew.paul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Thats the point. I remember Nicholas Negroponte stating in an interview that the funky colors are to discourage theft. If you see some man running away with a bright green laptop, its pretty obvious what it is and that he stole it.
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Illegal internet aliens?
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Its just you.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why should we buy them textbooks at 100 dollars a piece when we could get them one of these and load them with all the textbooks they'll ever need?
(Yes, textbooks are that expensive.. on a good day.) - cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The problem with the Segway is not the technology, but the price tag. At $100 these computers are disposable. There was also a lack of supply and low demand. This computer will not have a demand problem.
To understand technology for consumers, you need to understand business. - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Isn't it intended for children?
- sycsix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How am I laughing hysterically and offended all at the same time?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Looks like some sort of demon laptop.
Like one of the comments on Flickr said, they should charge US buyers $200 and give one to the 3rd world countries. It could be some sort of charity promotion (and possibly a tax write off anyway). - Narrator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6the $100 419 Scam/Gold Farmer starter kit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's a kids product, so your comment is actually spot on.
- tether, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The segway began as hype and never amounted to anything much more than hype.
- Phlag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Firemillen2, your reply is a series of random, disjointed, illogical criticisms lacking proof against THE HORRIBLE WHITE DEVIL.
Keep stickin' it to the man, buddy. He just wants to keep our dark-skinned brothers down! - conigs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"My main concern with dupes is that they can cause the more important and popular stories to take longer to get to the front page."
I agree with the rest of your post, but what I really don't like about dupes is when talking about the duped story takes over the conversation instead of actually discussing the content of said story. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interesting quandry. You're right. There are a lot of other more serious problems facing these countries. But the biggest problem is the lack of knowledge and information. Also known as EDUCATION. Without education these countries will continue to have problems such as war, unstable governments, lack of any kind of progress in general (political, social, economic to name a few). The $100 laptop is a tool that can be used to bring that education to these locations. Of course, humans being human, you're also right in that these machines will probably be largely used for non-educational functions. But that has less to do with the OLPC project and more to do with the types of people who are a problem everywhere in the world. I speak of the lazy, cunning, fools who only wish to do enough to unfairly skim off of the systems to their own benefit. That has no class restriction either. There are rich people who are perfectly happy to spend more money on finding ways to keep from paying taxes just as there are bottom feeding scammers who con social programs (ie. "welfare queens") to get more than they should. Sadly it appears that nearly everywhere on earth people are losing their sense of civic duty (if they ever had one). Every human on the planet should be raised with the following mindset regarding everyone else: "You are my responsibility and I am yours. Without each other we cannot succeed. Against each other, in the long run we shall fail". But most of you haven't evolved to that level yet and the ecological balance has been damaged in deference to the less evolved. Give it a thousand years or so and nature will reestablish the balance. I've seen it happen time and time again throughout the eons.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If the US was run by human beings instead of evil robots we could cut 10% of our Iraqi murder budget and give one to every student so they can grow up to be educated, productive, members of the workforce.
- disrupter, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10like AIDS
- freddybeanbag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have no idea why it has horns really, but just from looking at some of the pictures I'll say it looks like they're there to cover USB and other inputs on the sides. (And that might double as a wireless antenna.)
