- kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9wow, so, people don't know much about this story either, and their ignorance is showing. even the sunday times got it wrong. she wasn't trying to commit suicide. she apparently had gotten into, as the british say, a "bad row" with her childrens before they were going to bed. in order to calm down and get to sleep, she took some sleeping medication. not to commit suicide, not being a druggie. sleeping meds caused her to stay asleep while being mauled. i'm sure she woke up at the end of it (or maybe even during it) and, well, the rest is history.
FYI: i'm writing a 3 page paper on the ethical decision to actually do this for my 3000 level medical ethics class, so i've actually researched this alot. - synystar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Now, if I am wrong, rate my comment -4 or something, but I feel no sorrow for druggies who get their faces bitten off by dogs. Go dogs." "i dont like her. stupid druggie." "if ya asked me.. the dog should have finished the job... less story there." "she doesnt deserve to live more or less get a new face... how can she even look at herself?"
It's really amazing... the diversity you see in diggers comments. Just a quick question though? When did drug users and depressed people become perfectly acceptable dog-fodder. Either I missed some shift in popular thinking on this subject or the *****/non-***** comment ratio is higher than I would've expected. Last I heard people getting mauled by dogs is rarely a good thing. I don't think her labrador was attempting to prevent her from killing any of you, so what again is your problem? - Trojan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10what is the ***** matter with you people?
Nobody deserves getting their face bitten off. Suicide/Drug addict or not. Wishing suffering on another human being who has done you or anyone else no wrong is ***** psychotic.
Shame on you animals. The dog is more humane. - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"How does being a drug user make it her fault that a dog bit off her face? How is that different if you're asleep, and your pet came up to you and bit off your face?"
Umm.... Because if you're sleeping versus unconcious from a self-inflicted drug-induced state, I'm pretty sure you'd wake up when fido starts searching for kibbles-and-bits behind your nose. - CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8may a dog eat your balls the next time you're unconscious from a night of drinking
- FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Someone trying to commit suicide by ODing on sedatives doesn't make her a "druggie".
Nor is somone who does someone who is addicted to drugs deserve to die.
Ever hear of a little something called compassion? You have no idea what her life was like and you think you have the right to pass judgement on someone who has had a life probably many times harder than yours?
I'm not disagreeing that the doctors had their own agenda, but if no one does it first, then it will never happen. Something like this could help many people who are definitely deserving of it.
Cut this poor lady a little slack for being brave enough to be the guinea pig. - CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i was under the impression the drug overdose was because she was trying to commit suicide
- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I swear, the level of maturity here declines more and more every day. Digg needs a feature where you can karma someone into not being able to post anymore for a period of time.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow..this is why digg is frowned upon.
"I'd hit it.....No! Not even with a car." Cmon dude...mature a little... - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks to me like this woman's doctors did an amazingly good job.
- krazikamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"First off, they have been waiting YEARS for this opportunity. They jumped on this as soon as they could. Of course she didn't pay for it, the company that desperately wants to market and sell face transplants paid for it gladly (or persuaded a hostpital to perform the surgery)"
Those of us who aren't cynical would consider this a win-win situation. The doctors got a guinea pig, and she got a chance at a normal life back. I don't see what the problem is here. - CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not that bad at all
i'd like to see a before-and-after
before she got mauled that is - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"There is still a risk that Miss Dinoire's body will reject the new face and for the rest of her life she will have to take preventative drugs, which cause an increased risk of cancer and kidney disease.
But she is not letting anything spoil her hopes. "
I would be more worried about the chain smoking and suicidal dendencies than the preventitive drugs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7How does being a drug user make it her fault that a dog bit off her face?
How is that different if you're asleep, and your pet came up to you and bit off your face? What difference was it to the dog?
Have common sense, it's not her fault. - whereswayne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3props to the doctors, sounds like the best and the brightest were tapped for the operation.
drug overdose or not, getting your face ripped off and having the courage to show your new face in public is definately a sign of some inner strength. more than some of the keyboard jockey's above will ever have. - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Whoa... It looks just like it was Photoshopped, only real. Literally "cut and paste".
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's hope that this experience gives her a new outlook on life and not feel suicidal.
- eastshores, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is interesting, but not surprising how some people regard those that are afflicted with things like drug abuse, suicidal behaviour, etc. The fact that they have managed to go through life un-touched or un-affected by someone close to them having these problems seems to give them an arrogance that is rather sad.
- CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank god for the decent comments since it hit the front page.
Ignorance and judgement go hand-in-hand far too much. All too often on digg anyway. - rft3rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm pretty sure you'd wake up when fido starts searching for kibbles-and-bits behind your nose.
and understatement if there ever was one... this lin gets my vote for the most appropriate and casually dropped one-line in the history of Digg. Kudos Uptown!! - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Soon enough instead of TV shows titled "Wife Swap", we'll have TV shows called "Face Swap". Oh wait, they've already got that idea: http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/blackwhite/main.html
Gee, what will they think of next? - mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This just goes to show the vile and putrid waste people with so-called-morals posses in their minds.
They're all loving, all forgiving, and all peaceful but just towards whom they deem worthy. What a crock of *****. If you were really compassionate you would have no reserve as to who deserves compassion in your eyes.
Some say guy named Jesus went around helping the ones who you wouldn't dare to have compassion for, much less help out. I personally don't believe it, but it would be nice if the people who claim to follow in his footsteps would really do so. But what do I know I'm just a crazy Atheist lefty.
If you don't have anything constructive to add why bother to even waste your time here?
-3 for all you @holes. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not bad indeed. I have big scars on my head and neck, but hair mostly cover them. Poeple would have to look hard to find them.
- CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lol, haven't you heard? drugs are evil
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh. The Wind Changed.
- talwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shes not the first, i have seen 2 documentaries already on face transplants being performed.. one in india and the other in europe somewhere.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 No woman deserves to suffer like this. You, people, blame her for drug use, yet the article doesn't specify the circumstances. It could've been accidental.
She has 2 daughters, has been divorced and then such a tragedy on top everything.
She deserves a chance. I'm sure if a thing like that happened to anyone of you, you'de be the first in line for a transplant. I wish forums like that could be used against people:
"Sorry, but cannot allow you the surgery as you have previously opposed such measure at www.digg.com on Jan 28, 2006." - CaptenSpaulding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Then shouldn't they have killed her rather than fixed her face? How is fixing her face going to help her if she wants to die anyway?
-seumas
It was in response to pingviini saying s/he had no sorrow for druggies. I had read somewhere that she was trying to kill herself (ie. not necessarily a drug addict) so was just trying to clear things up.
Of course, none of that should have brought about the hate-mongering by many, and in fact, kkaabboomm has pointed out that it was neither; she had taken sleeping pills to calm down/get to sleep after an argument. - flaurencin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's crazy they gave the name of the dead person. Where is the medical secret. :,(
- Optomistified, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only two things are infinite, space and mans stupidity. I don't believe anything more needs to be said about the morbid comments posted on this page. You should be ashamed of yourselves for not only writing these sick things, but for laughing at them as well. To those of you who made comments opposing the tasteless remarks of the morally retarded, I give you a tremendous amount of respect and wish that there were more people out there like you. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed as being morally retarded, fear not.The wait for some sort of treatment is finally over. It's a new pill called MORAGRA. It's like VIAGRA for your morals. Keep in mind that MORAGRA is only suitable for those who are open minded enough for moral expansion. Talk to your doctor to see if MORAGRA would be right for you. Possible side effects include, but are not limited to. . .head re-surfacing from anus, intolerance to vulgarity, and in some cases a decrease in diarrhea of the mouth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I myself am dissapointed that after getting this second chance, she is going back to her old ways, chain smoking. She doesn't care about her health, nor her children's health. I'm not just talking about second hand smoke either; her smoking gives her kids no reason not to pick it up, if they havn't already.
- psychospam90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just ahve one question.
Why is this in the technology section, shouldn't it be in the science section? - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope she does well.. but I can't help but think about how creepy it is to have the face of someone who killed themself
- mr_cheese28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you think about it that lady has a zombie face.
- Whatchamacallit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dogs don't go up to a sleeping human and just tear their face off! Especially not their owners! Yes, there have been many dog attacks mostly with the infamous pit bull breed. The pit bull is a dangerous breed and is outlawed in many parts of the world due to their genetic tampering through breeding to make them more vicious. Even then, there is usually a reason for the dog attack. Dogs react to certain behavior and most maulings have some sort of trigger event. The only reason I can come up with is she took an overdose of sleeping pills because of her rotten children and she went into a seizure and the dog became frightened and attacked her. Labradors are a loving breed, this attack would not be normal behavior for this breed. They are excellent hunting dogs and even considered to be ideal guide dogs for the blind.
Apparently, the donor was also a suicide victim. Now the face transplant appears to have gone rather well she takes up smoking again which requires her to be able to move her lips and make a sucking motion. This means she is regaining control of her face. She is also eating and drinking without drooling. But the smoking increases the danger of tissue rejection. Cigarette smoke irritates the lining of the mouth and sinuses as well as the throat. Her scars are internal to her mouth and upper sinuses and nose. She already had a rejection scare but a high dosage of anti-rejection steroids stopped it for the moment. Only time will tell if the new face will just slide off or not.
I disagree, that she was a good candidate for the first face transplant. She is not mentally nor emotionally stable enough. In my opinion it will fail no matter how good the intentions. i.e. One woman commits suicide and another is given a new life after attempting her own suicide. Poetic solution, but by choosing someone who was suicidal makes the subsequent psychiatric treatment all the more difficult. This poor woman may again attempt to take her own life, especially if the new facial tissue is rejected. Such a major scientific event as this needs to succeed so Michael Jackson can replace his prosthetic nose with that of a white 12 year old boy! Frankly, I am against face transplants just for that single reason alone! Think about it, you wake up from surgery with a totally new face and you look in the mirror, what's gonna be your reaction! Now I've got to go cancel my organ donor card so my face doesn't end up on someone else after I'm dead! - LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow..they did an amazing job
- GreenStop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sucks.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote: "Whoa... It looks just like it was Photoshopped, only real. Literally "cut and paste"."
That just made my day. :D - Redge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder why its dog bit her anyway...
- schroeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if i had a 46 yr old strangers face where mine used to be, i would honestly, without a doubt, go COMPLETELY mad!
- SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0she looks like paul mcartany
- kkaabboomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it wasn't an overdose, it was just an amount that was able to knock her body out for a period of time. she didn't OD on said sleeping pills, she just took some and conched the hell out
- thecolorme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0did they give her an old woman's face?
- cesclaveria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We're just saying that they could have given the gift to someone that actually deserved it, like someone in a fire or someone that was tortured or in some other accident. Hell, maybe even someone that was hit by a drunk driver and their car caught on fire."
Can you tell me why taking sleep pills before going to bed and then having your dog take your face off your skull make her dont deserved it?
//sorry for the bad english, but i think you get the point. - bobb243, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god bless her
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"minimal scaring"
Yeah, once they perfect the technique the results won't be as scary... - sotloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0She is a human being what is with all these people that have nothing but judgmental things to say about her? At the very least the research in her case may be used to help any one of us because we are all one drunk driver, one fire or one accident away from needing this technology. Synystar's coment is right on point the immature faction of Digg is really sick.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The stupid bitch went back to smoking soon after recovering from the surgery. That should do wonders for the healing process. Never too early to start abusing a precious gift and a second chance, I guess."
It's difficult to smoke when you don't have lips. - MindReaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is jes downright eerie. From one suicide attemptee to another . . . .
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"We're just saying that they could have given the gift to someone that actually deserved it, like someone in a fire or someone that was tortured or in some other accident. Hell, maybe even someone that was hit by a drunk driver and their car caught on fire."
Good thing none of you had any say it. -
