- starf1re, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Ads? What ads? Websites still have ads?
/me dusts off IE and opens it up to a popular website. ahhhh! hideous!
The firefox adblock extension is one of the best things to ever happen to a web browser, and one of the main reasons that I use FFox. - Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14But if we don't look at the ads it's like we're stealing the internet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Firefox users are at LEAST four times as likely to have installed AdBlock than IE users (which can't do this).
Knowledge of technology likely doesn't relate to ad-clicking. It most likely means that Firefox users are more likely to have very specific destinations when they browse the internet, and are interested in whatever information is contained in those destinations. This is why they downloaded Firefox -- it helps them get to this information with less hassle. Internet Explorer users, on the other hand, are probably more casual web browsers, and are more likely to click on ANY link (whether it's an advertisement, or just a link to a random page of some sort that catches their eye). This sort of apathy about browsing is the reason they don't care about switching browsers.
Of course, I'm just speculating based on common knowledge and personal experience. - Wuss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've been using firefox for awhile now, but I do not have ad block installed. Most of my friends that use firefox also do not have ad block installed.
I don't think it has anything to do with 1 single extension. Generally speaking, firefox users are just more savvy then then IE users. That's why they use firefox to begin with. Clicking on internet ads is the equivelent of actually having a conversation with a telemarkter. Firefox users aren't that dumb. - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Adblock + Filterset.G Updater means you'll almost *never* see any ads -- and you don't even have to worry about creating your own rule set. I think a lot of Firefox users don't even see ads anymore (I know I don't). Furthermore, the idea that a lot of people think of the "big blue e" as the Internet is not a joke. I work in a computer center at my university, and often when I recommend that students use Firefox, they look at me like I'm retarded. They really do think that the "big blue e" is the internet, and they *really* don't understand the difference between a banner that looks like a dialog box and a real dialog box. Surely these people are more gullible than most FF users.
- ssb8mao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When I am forced to use IE at school, I get clausterphobic with all the ads jumping out at me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i use content block and get nothing but ad's
i dont click them though.. i just like to look at the flashing colors until i get a seizure.. it is like the fair but you dont have to stand in line. - markmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, I forgot, here's my adblock list:

- dvdgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Firefox, and when I read an online article that I find useful or funny, and the page has (non-flash) ads on it, I'll click on them. I think this is a common courtesy, and should be instilled as a form of netiquette. Of course, I always open the ad links in a background tab and never bother to look at them, but don't tell the advertisers that :)
- mason.parker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-2 Flame
Man I hate the intarweb. These are the same lame-ass comments I stopped reading on Slashdot. I know we feel better about ourselves when we can look down at somebody (like I'm doing now) but WHY the stupid comments?
"HELLO!!! IE users are archaic and dumb and perpetually stuck in the late Nineties."
This is why the 'Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy' skits on SNL are so funny. - alastria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty much every Firefox user has installed Adblock.
- nesquik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Surprised these flame bait articles are getting Digg-ed. Shouldn't be surprised though, the majority of the users on this site still find humor in portraying companies using elite speak ("1 trillion FREE AIM Smileys!!???!?!? That's t3h 1337!!!" - ckpcw.) These same users will purchase an X-Box 360 at an inflated price and still trash talk Microsoft.
Why does this even warrant a survey? A true waste of money. Most general users use Windows, by default their browser is Internet Explorer, chances are they contribute to economy and are affected by marketing.
You're fighting the battle against ads, hindering the any potential revenue for the free services most of the ad endorse sites offer. Don't get me wrong, I dislike pop up ads as much as the next guy, but what harm is there in a banner ad. Chances are it may be of interest to you. - MarkXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Are firefox users more tech-knowledgable and therefore less likely to ad click?"
Exactly. Ive talked to many people who use IE, and they are "Fire what...?" - theDrizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this makes me feel smart...
adblock for president - Stormen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I work as a web manager in Norway, and I often buy commercial banners for a variety of companies. To be honest, you're really killing the internet if you're blocking ads.
Let's imagine a typical scenario: Johnny (20) starts his own website about.. flowers. He's reliant of ads to gain revenue, as his content (flowers) is non-commerical. To improve his growing site, Johnny needs to hire a Ruby-programmer. However, seeing all of ya'll rednecks have installed Adblock, 15% of all his visitors doesn't see the ads - and had this been in 2010, perhaps as much as 50% of his visitors wouldn't see his ads. That means a dramatic cut in his income, and oatmeal for breakfast & dinner - every day.
Get the picture? You're behaving egoistically and shortsighted. - shakey77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that this is probably because of Adblock, but people also need to note that adblock violates the usage terms of many websites. You may not care about doing this too a big company or corporate site like cnn.com or news.com, but it can have a real impact on the independent content provider. We all like to have access to seemingly free information, but the terms of the site often dictate that you have to view (sometimes worded as no altering of the displayed information or formating) the ads. Now, if you do not like the adds, then do not visit the site or don't click on them, but just blocking them may be taking money from your neighbor.
- SubZ3r0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Most of novice users have IE on their machine without knowing. These novice users are more attracted towards the IE. "
One way or another all users mainly windows users use IE and don't even realize it explorer is a piece of IE maybe some of you should get an education. All Firefox is, is mozilla so give it a rest cause I'm tired of people who use firefox putting people down when they themselves just buy into the hype of this dumb web browser war I believe a PC is not just called a Personal Computer just to sell well its said that way cause its like your own personal storage base thus like opinions everyone is entitled to them. So lay off for a change people us IE dont make them anyless smarter then you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2LOL, can you imagine an internet with no ads?
no ads = no google.
When everyone use adBlock, then it's Bye bye, Google. - ckpcw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11 trillion FREE AIM Smileys!!???!?!? That's t3h 1337!!!
Firefox users don't click the ads cause we already got our smileys from ThePirateBay.org. - theDrizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well thanks to IE users...we wont have to worry about google going under now will we
- almast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of novice users have ie on their machine without knowing. These novice users are more attracted towards the ie.
- cmikeshawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firefox users have demonstrated the ability to apply critical thought and make independent choices unlike IE users.
- horatio324, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adblock and Customize Google; I have my Google set up so I never see any Google adverts, on any webpage, and on any gmail. Can't click what you cannot see.
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NetCaptor users NEVER click ads. I know, I am one of about the 10.
- samstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont mind ads on sites, it's not like I'll ever click them.
Popups can piss off though, - PhatFingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd at least entertain the idea that grayware/spyware in the form of ActiveX plugins and unpatched javascript vulnerabilities may account for a good chunk of those "clicks".
And when a couple of simple Adblock regexes can block the majority of ads... out of sight out of mind seems a pretty likely reason, too.
/^[Aa][Dd][Ss]?[.]/
/[Cc][Ll][Ii][Cc][Kk][Ss]?[./]/
/[./]([Aa][Dd]|[Bb][Aa][Nn][Nn][Ee][Rr])[Ss]?/
/[Pp][Rr][Ii][Mm][Aa][Rr][Yy][Aa][Dd][Ss]?[.]/ - McoreD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It just means that the IE users are generous enough to help out the Website owner to earn some buck.
- cheesetoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I like a website or blog that i visit frequently and see an ad, I right click and open the link in a new tab and let it sit there for a while before I close it. I don't really pay attention to the new tab, but i like to support the websites that provide good content. Yes, I got banned from Google Adsense for clicking my own ads!
- SubZ3r0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good point for all the firefox noobs out there that think dumbness is actually making them smarter and ruining free services that rely on them ads to pay for there hosting. its not free people bandwidth costs money.
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HAHA! Adblock kills this page....
- Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try clicking on ads for your favorite sites occasionally, or even not so occasionally- do it quite regularly.
Your favorite sites won't be around long if you expect them to run on magic ad-free money.
I'm going to the top right now to click on some digg ads. What does it cost me- nothing? - Skitals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why exactly would you want to block ads? Do you really want content providers to switch to a subscription model? (just think, digg no longer a free service).
- whatsthatsmell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've really been trying to cut back on the number of ads i click on, can someone tell me what Firefox is? It sounds like it could help with my problem.
- SubZ3r0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0before someone starts cryin over my post yes I use IE and im quite happy with it. I have used firefox and many other browsers all seem the same to me if they load a webpage great I dont care!
- bonedog73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's been so long since I have seen a popup. Now that we have to use IE at work, it has opened up a whole new world of ad hell for me. Cant wait to get home and surf without all this *****.
- tadeu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adblock plus can even block DIV tags or any DOM element... i.e, easier to block text ads too! =)
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ads suck. I run 3 websites out of my own pocket. No ads. I get about 500 visitors a day. Why would I want to annoy them?
ADS SUCK!
If you need ads to survive, get off the internet. - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i use a hosts file from here

stops pretty much all adverts and banner ads dead. - zqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0/^[Aa][Dd][Ss]?[.]/

Can anyone explain to me what this does, presumably one puts it into Adblock filters but how does it work? - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t adblock! i dont know what some of you are talking about adblock doesnt block out this entire page for me o_O
- bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adblock has already been said, but it can be said again. I still am suprised when I have to view websites at school that don't have adblock installed. It irritates me so much, especially when jackasses put them in the middle of stories. What next? I between letters? Halfway between every "s"?!
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One word: Adblock
- dutter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Zqwerty:
Those are regular expressions. More here: http://www.google.com/search?q=regular+expressions
Adblock could be a very unpleasant surprise for Microsoft once they launch their online self-serve ads: http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/wpn-60-20051212FirefoxExtensionCouldWreckMSNAdCenter.html - tdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or, possibly IE users are less likely to click an ad because the user is 8x more likely to be an IE user than a ff user.
that means all you former linux "my dick is larger than yours because i use linux" idiots are more likley to click an ad than an IE user.
***** i hate idiots - Antz0rz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lolol noobs plz.
Yeah its because we all have adblock. :P - gluon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys are the l33t3st l33tst3rs to ever be l33t on the internet.
- m85476585, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't block Google ads (except on Digg and Slashdot because I go there so often).
No body is loosing money by me blocking ads. I wouldn't click on them anyway. I installed Opera the other day and the FIRST thing I did was find out how to block ads. - deepblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't view this particular comments page using my default browser Maxthon. It says [Blocked Ads]. I have no problem with the other comments pages.
I had to use Firefox to view this page! - bchow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From personal experience:
I use firefox and I do not use adblock.
But after using the internet for so long (Celebrated 10 years in October and will do another 10 years of self-payed internet access in February) I do not "see" them anymore. Even if reading a text next to it - I can't remember the ad a few seconds later. And I'm so fast closing overlaying ads that they are gone before they loaded completely. So no wonder I don't click on the ads. -

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
