- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think it balances out, or close too. Sure i have downloaded firefox more than once, but ive installed in on more pcs than the # of downloads. Also on some machines, multiple users share the pc. So for me the download to uesr ratio is more like 50:1. :)
- scrapstyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and 99 billion served McDonald's.
- nohart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually it was just me.
- Bahwoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2# of downloads means jack. I use it because its good at what it does.
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Though I love Firefox...I have to ask a few questions (though these won't solve the debate, they would be helpful)
1) What version of Firefox was downloaded 150 million times?
2) What percentage of these downloads were from unique IP addresses?
According to InforPlease at: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0908185.html
as of 2005 there were 934,480,000 Internet Users worldwide. If we're to believe that 150,000,000 dowloads equals users, then this is 16% of the world uses Firefox.
However, according to Janco Associates at: http://www.e-janco.com/PressRelease/press_release20060124Browser.htm
Firefox's marketshare is only about 12.6%
I don't know the reliability of these Janco stats, however, these are real numbers and real questions to include in this debate.
This whole thing is sort of like my question of AOL accounts vs AOL users. I don't think those numbers have ever necessarily been equal. Same goes with Firefox downloads...it is more of a testimonial than a statistic. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox is growing, but it's obvious that some people download more than one copy, so it's very hard - to impossible to get how much individual users there are.
- unknowndomain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** hell why are people so thick, if u read the comments here they are all the ***** same!
Who cares if I use firefox or not or if ive downloaded it 10 times or if I have used a memory stick to put it on all the computers at work or what ever I dont care, w2g mozila for getting 150mil thats all it needs we dont need to know from every one on the web that they have downloaded firefox 10 times or that they perfer opera.
This is a news item about firefox not a opera vs firefox vs ie vs the others
Also stop posting the same news over and over ppl its boring. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1only 850 million more to go, considering there are over 1 billion internet users.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm holding out for a new version of NCSA Mosaic.
- midlifecrisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The market share is no where NEAR 12.6%"
Depends. For the overall market the actual number may be lower but if you target a certain audience with your website or blog (let's call them the "Technology Haves"...) the number can be much higher. I started to publish the actual browser stats for one of my blogs and regularly have more than 60% FF users. - nox327, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox downloads: 140485955
Add this counter to your page
Why does it say this on the spread firefox page
Today it was more than 165 million and now it's 140mil - Kiba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1greenshop: do you have to echo what your fellow diggers say? WE GOT IT LOUD AND CLEAR!
Yes I know that a lot of people like you hate Firefox because of memory leaks and like Opera a lot.
Please do not repeat the variant of "Memory leaks problems OMG!" every time it was about firefox.
It is gettting old
I be happy if you do that.
Also this apply to Firefox fanboys too. They are also annoying,
Thank you for listening to my opinonated comment. - wicked9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the description doesn't even make sense
- Kiba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ARGH! I hate the same damn comment that happen every time when we reach some milestone!
"I download this balbhabahblahblahbab times. I download one and deploy it to balbalbalbahbalba computers"
"MEMORY LEAK NOT FIXED OMG!"
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!
STOP MAKING THE SAME DAMN COMMENT!
We already get what you are saying! Now, can you make fresh new comment that won't echo everyone's else?
People are so damn unoriginal and ignorants those day..... - asadotzler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there was a bug in our counter that surfaced with the release of Firefox 1.5.0.1. We aren't actually at 150 million downloads yet. This should be corrected soon.
- Asa - BrainiakZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may be growing in downloads, but my web stats for all my servers hardly reflect Firefox. I think Firefox is nice.. I use it for all my development, but I think its a little over-rated. I think its just mainly people who hate Microsoft who want to use it. There was another story on IE7 beta today where people were knocking on it. DUDE.. it was beta!
Browser wars just waist peoples time. - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all of you that say you've downloaded it X times, you also have to consider people like me. I am a lan admin and I've downloaded it maybe 3 times, including my home copies, and I've installed it on over 200 computers.
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With Asa's adjustment sans 20million, that brings the marketshare percentage (based upon 2005 numbers listed per my earlier comment) to ~13%
Which, given the certain growth of the number of internet users from 934,480,000 Internet Users worldwide (thanks to http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0908185.html), puts the market share back inline with Janco's number of 12.6%
It would have been nice...but we'll just have to wait. Besides, who really cares how many people use Firefox...just as long as YOU enjoy it, cest la vie! - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Multiple Downloads adds to the total, while unofficial mirrors and software repositories (ie. apt-get, portage) subtract from the total. I would say this number isn't *too* far off. maybe give or take 60% ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone with courage enough to admit they still use InternetExplorer?
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, the FF community is measuring success based on the amount of downloads, even though most websites only experience 10% usage from firefox. People download it and check it out, then NEVER USE IT AGAIN. After the memory leaks crash your system, why would you use it again. Since the Firefox programmers are not be paid their is no financial incentive for success and firefox will never gain 50% or even get near to IE's massive user community of 75%+. Keeping trying to justify success somehow since you'll need all the momentum you can get.
- rusty_g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually they didn't-----
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/21923 - ShadowRider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the *****? Why would you make a big deal about every little progress? Oh Firefox made 155 million! OMFG!!!!!LKKJLDjlk
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1These milestones are kind of annoying, and I've downloaded Firefox dozens of times so this is hardly representative of unique users.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive downloaded it like 4 or 5 times
then i switched to opera - cowboyjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just for comparison purposes, Skype is at 248 million downloads. 65% more downloads than Firefox.
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just found this amusing: if you click on the last page of stories (982), roughly about as far down the list as this story was is a title reading "Firefox reaches 10 million downloads!".
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im responsible for 149 million of that
- msipes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, and about 50 of those are mine. 150 million...divide that by 100 and thats probably more accurate.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Read the article...
- OperatorNo9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The absolute numbers have no meaning. It's the user base. Stop fretting about FF. For absolute browsing experience, use Opera."
Absolute. You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Seriously though, absolute is a big word. Are you sure you want to use it on a browser that lacks functionality?
I mean absolute, to me, would mean has everything a browser could need. And yet, Opera has no means of extension. And when it fails on one of the numerous IE only websites, you have no recourse. Of course, I bet hardcore fanboys like you probably just think to your 1337 self that their content wasn't worth viewing anyway. But in the business world, that website might be essential to your operation. If I end up on an IE only website, I can either right-click and pick "View in IE" or click the "IE Tab" button that loads the page in IE right inside a FF tab. Does it save me goo-gobs of time? Nope. But it puts a smile on my face every time I do it.
Don't get me wrong, I love Opera. I think they did some very innovative stuff that inspired the world of browser developers. You could even say that they sparked the browser revolution. You could even say "OMG Opera is teh h0tn3ss. Every time I think about it, I wet my little fanboy jeans." But absolute? - tkcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Downloads don't indicate usage. Sadly, my Microslave bro still use IE.
- jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a very inaccurate number because people download it more than once. There's no way 150 million people are using FF.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not really accurate at all considering many people download more than once. The way people claim statistics is lame. Similar to the way Macromedia claims %90 something percent of browsers have Flash player, but most of them don't have the latest version, and were tested on sites that a user visiting would likely have Flash.
- frankiefrankie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: EmilioLizardo
"Anyone with courage enough to admit they still use InternetExplorer?"
Well I do.. Because of all those memory leaks my computer becomes slower and slower as I use firefox. I posted this on mozilla forums several times, yet no solution.
they say "If you find that Firefox's memory usage continues to grow after long periods of being open, you may want to consider periodically restarting Firefox"
duh... wasn't this suggestion (!) Microsoft's motto (i.e., restart) that everybody made fun of. - hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've downloaded like 20 times..
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not really accuarate because many of us download the latest version and install it on 100's of PC's.
;)
1 = 100.
GG~ - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather use SeaMonkey myself, but they just won't implement some of the abilities that Firefox has in it. Oh well, someday I hope.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please!
Can one of you diggers please tell me what 'memory leak" is?
The only problems I have is with Mozilla Tthunderbird. Even the latest release still has glitches, like in saving sent mails. But Firefox seems to work perfectly.
What the hell is a 'memory leak'? Maybe I am not an advanced enough user to notice that. Mine works fine!
You can privately mail me at giotkr @ earthlink.net if you have the answer.
Thanks! - Outdoor83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I used to use Firefox, until one day when I came in to work on Monday after Firefox had been open all weekend. It was after a Friday of research online, so many tabs were opened / closed. There was only one tab still open when I got back.
I noticed that my computer was kinda dragging. I have no extensions, just the base Firefox installation. Wondering what it was, I ran top. I took a screenshot because it was so awful.
CPU usage to Firefox: 86.7% (of a 1.7GHz P4)
Memory: 85% (512MB)
The memory leak IS NOT A MYTH. IT IS REAL. Maybe only on some systems, but seems to be a whole lot of them by the response out there. It requires a daily browser restart, but sometimes you just wanna keep some tabs open forever. And you should be able to do that.
Opera lets me do that, and that's what I'm using right now. I'm very happy with it, does everything that Firefox does (and a little more of the things I want). And after days of usage, has sane running values. If you're a Memory Leak victim (capital ML), use Opera. - danjal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree, opera is the coolest and sleakest browser and has a much more tider interface than any browser
- GodPants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not impressed. I have an idiot friend of mine whose hooked on the Pron. hes always getting viruses and having to reformat and download. Hes probably responsible for 2/3's of those downloads.
Loser. - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its market share that is important. google are going to start bundling it, meaning more instals with the stepford masses.
I prefer opera, although firefox is also ok. they all have their + and -. I like IE the least but have to keep it as a back up for compatibility glitches on sites.
anything that kills off microsofts market share is good for innovation. - pigdart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive downloaded firefox at least 15 times, but i don't have it installed on any machine. I really wish someone would post the browser and operating system stats for digg. Then we could all see which fan-boys are the loudest.
- MStiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I've downloaded it at least 20 times between my home and work computer, what with all the versions.
- kali25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what, I have downloaded it about 50 times since 0.3. 150 million does not mean anything So if everyone downloaded 50 times there are on 3 million users.
- locojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In other news, RAM manufacturers rejoice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IE7 beta 2 is on the level of Firefox so i see Firefox losing market share or not gaining market share in the future.
If only you can synchornize bookmarks, rss between IE and Firefox - leesto, on 12/17/2008, -0/+0I think this is a bit wrong now. go onto the page and you get this:

Oops. We recently introduced a bug into the counter and it's being fixed. We're not quite there yet. Sorry for the confusion. We accidentally counted the 20 million people who updated from Firefox 1.5 to Firefox 1.5.0.1 this week.
