- ShitHappens, on 10/12/2007, -25/+92If you honestly care about the correct abbreviation for firefox, please mod this down. I'm really curious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55The previous posters title was mispelled. So I posted the news again.
- acr2001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44If they dont know what firefox is I really doubt they are worthy of being called "good at computer stuff"
- Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I think you only see the ad when you're browsing with Internet Exploder so that's probably why you don't see it.
P.S. I personally don't like the abbreviation 'Fx' just type it out.. Firefox is not a long word sheesh. - clintonforbes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Um, being computer illiterate and being stupid are not the same thing. There are many people who are brilliant in their chosen field who don't happen to know a lot about computers - and are happy with the standard Windows XP, IE, Office, etc.
- gleffler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18This isn't entirely a third party ad - the submitter should realize that.. the ad is for "Firefox with Google Toolbar" which makes it sound as if they're pushing the Toolbar more than the browser, to me; and that they prefer to develop it for Fx instead of IE, which is fine with me.
In fact, I think this is a great thing, just not quite as 'third party pushing' as the post makes it out to be. It's my opinion Google's much more interested in getting the Google Toolbar on every desktop than they are getting Fx on every desktop. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+28good for google. i recently switched from FF to Opera 9 but anything is better than IE, i everytime in class when i see more than half of them are still using it.
down with IE!!!! - tlogank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14They must not be THAT good if they don't know atleast what it is.
I mean anyone that has been to a tech-related webpage in the past year has HAD to have seen articles about it. - LouCypher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@anchorman: The permalink for the story is http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/23155
- recursive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10>HERE YE! HERE YE!
>The abbreviation for Firefox is "Fx", not "FF".
>And the proper format is "Firefox", not "FireFox".
>This is all on the Mozilla FAQ.
If you're going to be a pedantic prick, you shouldn't spell "HEAR YE" incorrectly. Twice. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Google is doing this to make more money - firefox sets its default homepage to google, IE does it to MSN. I still think this is great because the less people using IE the better.
- CrookedAsterisk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10dfunked,
I have never seen anyone anywhere type IE in an other combination, other than "ie." I really have no problem with holding down my shift key for the short duration of the time it requires to press the buttons "I," then "E" in sequence. - trvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7if anyone is too lazy to open IE and goto the link, it just redirects to here: http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/index.html
- dankoleary, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Wow. I think as geeks we don't realize how stupid the general base of computer users is. This is an excellent way to spread the word.
- mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Um, anchorman, how about you actually link to the article in question rather than the home page of spreadfirefox.com so that we don't have to have the Quicktime video foisted upon us? There's nothing more irritating than an embedded movie file that starts loading and gives you no way of saying "stop loading, you freak; I don't want you wasting my bandwidth and nor do I want to see your ugly self"! Grrrr! No digg...
The article itself (which is kinda reaching just a bit and isn't really a third-party product *endorsement* as I would call it) can be found here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/23155 (without evil, annoying Quicktime embedded crap). - cheshire76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This shouldn't be a big surprise to anybody using Firefox. There was an announcement in late February between Google and Firefox teaming up to help bring Microsoft down (vs MSN and IE). I'm pretty sure the deal was made at the same time as the Sun/Firefox deal.
These deals are good for Mozilla (they can keep working on these products and we get them for free). They are good for Google and Sun (we all know how bad MSN is and Sun still believes in Java games).
Sadly, Google is turning itself into the Microsoft of the web with their 1 out of 10 good ideas (most of them involving acquisitions). My fingers are crossed that Mozilla doesn't sell out to them and become the next IE. - haxored, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11@anchorman:
I love it. You repost because of poor spelling and then turn around and misspell "misspell". - honging, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah, first "third party endorsement" on the front page except for the google pack plug a while ago, which contains a lot of ... (wait for it) ... third party software!
- JimV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you visit Google with Firefox, you see nothing but the logo and the search box.
- purpleplatyduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6one of the Firefox banners offered on SpreadFirefox.com uses the abbreviation FF, indicating that this is an accepted abbreviation for Firefox. See http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/36x14/blue.gif
- Rio517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I agree, but I think the bigger issue is that as new posts are added to the spreadfirefox blog this story will get burried. In a week, this link won't be at all userful.
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The best thing about Google's Fx toolbar is that it works on Linux. :D
- Nightspark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As far as I know, Gates hasn't picked up the chair throwing habit.
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@clintonforbes: People can be happy with IE? How? Some new wonderdrug?
- Mooseknuckle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's actually "Here ye, hear ye!"
The "here ye" part is calling attention, and "hear ye" is telling everyone to listen... - gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The "Fx" abbreviation was drummed up by someone too stupid to have the foresight that it would not take at all. It doesn't take a genius to know that people are going to abbreviate something that sounds like "Fire Fox" to "FF" Although "FF" is already established in the mind of people as "Fast Forward", "Fx" is unfortunately pronounceable and widely used to abbreviate the word "Effects". If the Firefox people really wanted to promote an "Fx" abbreviation they should have just used "Fox" instead, and they should have started doing it a long time ago. Its too late now.
Or it's just a throwback to the days of the Netscape FAQ's "It's spelled N-E-T-S-C-A-P-E but pronounced Mozilla" - Dolemack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can't think of anything more worthless than the google toolbar on Firefox. I just used it on IE to stop pop-ups.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Frequently asked questions
"How do I capitalize Firefox? How do I abbreviate it?
Only the first letter is capitalized (so it's Firefox, not FireFox.) The preferred abbreviation is "Fx" or "fx". "
does anyone really believe that is a frequently asked question??
have you ever got someone to switch from ie to fx, only to have them say "wait how do i properly abreviate it, and what about capitals.. i am so lost"
I think i would unplug them from the web and walk away. - mackey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Any contribution to the cause of a higher quality free browser that is Firefox is a good thing. Cheers to Google.
- Nightspark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IE7 is a superior browser already? I admit, it does a couple things better than Firefox at the moment and is a hell of a lot better than IE6, but a superior browser? Even with its bugs?
IE7 could be considered a superior browser when they make good extensions possible and actually implement all the big web standards. Of course, by the time they do that I expect the Firefox team to have gained ground and shamed the IE team once again. - dufoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I imagine this is just a subtle move by Google to combat the crescendo of the rest of the industry's cooperative effort to halt the growth of Google's size and strength. Recent example (eBay talks with Microsoft and Yahoo): http://business.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,9075-2146354,00.html
- deadfones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess this eliminates the possiblitity of the Gbrowser.
- thomash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So isn't that abusing their position of near monopoly in the search engine market to push a product they have a vested interest in?
- boinx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow, so after all these years of firefox pimping google, google now pimps firefox.
its probably a safe bet that a large number of google employees now contribute source code to firefox on a regular basis. you could call this giving back to the open source community, or infiltration of a large company into a smaller organization for its own gain. probably some of both.
whatever the reason, its a safe bet to say firefox is google's browser. - digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No it doesn't. In IE it goes here: http://services.google.com/toolbar/firefox?utm_source=HPP&utm_campaign=hpp-fftoolbar_en
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1probably helps that balmer said he wanted to kill google
so now google is advertising FF (FiRefOX and they can sue me for my use of acros and capitals)
and also offering $1 for reffereals to swutch to FF. And as much as the mooozila guy would like, most people seem to have choosen FF1.5 over Fx 1.5.. they may really want bad for people to type fx.. but like sidewalks it is better to build it were people walk.. or they will just make a path anyway.
Most people make acros from first letters of sylabols anyway.. i am pretty sure in acrophobia they wouldnt let you list fx as fire fox - greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10I'm glad to see someone like google doing this. i can't tell you the amount of people i know who are good at computer stuff and have no idea what fire fox is.
- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to wish firefox was less about marketing, less about fighting IE and more about actually doing a great browser, now I don't care as much as before cause I switched to opera 9 and only use firefox for specific uses through specific extensions.
I wonder who knows that firefox is derived from "mozilla suite" internally codenamed seamonkey which derived from netscape code (internally coded mozilla) and that mozilla is the contraction of 'Mosaic killer' and godzilla. Mosaic being the most popular browser at the time. A long history of try to kill the most popular to get its marketshare instead of just trying to do a good software.
We users want less marketing speak and more efficiency, simple to use, modern features, innovative stuff, well designed user interface. firefox marketing has become a nuisance, almost an everyday hassle. More and more are getting sick of it everyday.
"Marketing remains an important part of our strategy. The focus of our community marketing initiatives can be found at SpreadFirefox. In addition to this we will continue to develop our own marketing materials."
-- quoted from firefox roadmap : http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/roadmap.html :
=> is it a good strategy to get people sick of a product by over marketing it ?
"Bon Echo will focus on user interface innovations that help the user in their common browsing tasks interacting with search, bookmarks and history, and improvements to tabbed browsing, RSS handling, managing extensions, security and performance.
Put into marketing-speak ..:
Bon Echo will deliver better performance, and improvements to virtually every part of the web experience, including new capabilities for managing and organizing a user's personal web information. From best-of-breed tabbed browsing to industry-leading web standards support, Bon Echo will demonstrate Mozilla's continued commitment to driving the web forward for every user, everywhere."
--quoted from quoted from firefox 2 goals: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox2/Goals
=> why do I feel like both of these are marketing speak ? can't the mozilla people just say the search bookmark and history is a broken feature that will be fixed in firefox 2. and why exactly do they need to reinvent the wheel when an extension already do this quite well, why not just integrate the extension in the builtin code ? same goes for many other extensions.
what was the last innovation from firefox ? when was it exactly ?
why not give the users what they really want: a free of ads web browsing ability out of the box. Is it related in any way to the millions of dollars mozilla receive from google ?
money talks and mozilla listens ... - MaelstromVale, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Google pimping the fox over IE... makes me wonder what ol' Ballmer will throw this time.
- acurism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its about time somebody brings an alternative browser to users attention. Good job Google!
- Junto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I think that the Firefox developers know with IE 7 around the corner things are about to get interesting. IE7 has the potential to be a really good browser, and they know it. They need to build momentum with ordinary home users, moving them to Firefox before IE7 gets pushed by Microsoft via Windows Update or similar.
The recent patch for a multitude of Firefox security bugs doesn't help the situation, where the words "Firefox" and "exploits" were plastered all over the press. I was just waiting to see "Firefix" pop up somewhere...
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#firefox1.5.0.2 - KayMan2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Firefox is not a third-party product, from Google's perspective. They provide Firefox (and more recently Opera) with plenty of cash to pay their developers in exchange for having the browser use Google as the default search engine. Consider it a joint venture. The default homepage for the Firefox browser is 'http://www.google.com/firefox' and unknown URLs bring the user to the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' search result.
- PhAdE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So somebody explain to me what useful functionality the google toolbar in Fx would allow me? There's already a searchbox, what else would I actually need?
- Nightspark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google's market share is a little over 50%, they definitely aren't a monopoly yet.
- bredman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I agree that Google's interest is obviously to spread the toolbar but if Google were advertising the toolbar first they would say something like 'Google toolbar on Firefox' not the other way around. This is definetly an add for Firefox first and a great one too.
- Maxington, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its safer, faster, and works well with google... I give it a thumbs up!
- TreasureChest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@LouCypher
Thanks for that. It'll be interesting to watch how the % market share changes after this.
This made me laugh: http://digg.com/software/Get_Firefox_-_Battle_of_the_Browsers_Video - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The comments here are way too off-topic. Anyways this is going to be the biggest turn in the browser wars since Opera was made ad-free. I think MS & Opera are gonna hate this move to the core. But there is a hidden reason for this move and I've posted my thoughts here http://chronotron.wordpress.com/2006/04/26/google-googs-firefox-ms-opera-shocked/
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"In fact, I think this is a great thing, just not quite as 'third party pushing' as the post makes it out to be. It's my opinion Google's much more interested in getting the Google Toolbar on every desktop than they are getting Fx on every desktop."
I have to agree here. As much as Google and Firefox don't suck, it's still milking Google search-page hits from the enthusiastic Firefox response in the end. - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Teh tihng I ewes it foor is teh spel cehker
