- hardeep1singh, on 11/07/2009, -1/+89What's with the super huge ad background. Don't be greedy digg, I want my white background back.
- Kronos6948, on 11/07/2009, -0/+72This ***** is beginning to be like Myspace. There's a reason why we don't go there anymore, Digg! Get rid of the ad background!!
- kiantech, on 11/07/2009, -0/+53***** this *****, get this ad off my computer.
- factsahoy, on 11/07/2009, -2/+46THIS IS ***** OFFENSIVE.
And the fall of Digg from a tech-news site to a bog of ***** is complete.
And WTF is up with that headline? When something "spikes", it INCREASES.
"We saw a spike in network activity during the hack attempt." - TylerDuhrdan, on 11/07/2009, -1/+39Why does Digg now look like a ***** MySpace page with a picture for a background?. WTF?
What is up with these retarded ads on Digg?.
Oh, and on topic, yeah FF has been pretty unstable recently. - infinitus64, on 11/07/2009, -0/+28adblock http://cotnet.diggstatic.com/img/skins/*
i prefer the previous aspect ratio but the blank background after i block your huge ***** advertisement you commercial whore admins. - inactive, on 11/07/2009, -0/+22Already blocked the backgrounds and any others that will come from there with a custom filter. Digg has the balls to label that a 'skin' and not horrific advertisement? Get the ***** out, seriously.
- PCMichiana, on 11/06/2009, -1/+22Dugg, but whats with all these websites doing those annoying advertising pop-ups now? (don't tell me to install a plug-in)
- lebeagle, on 11/07/2009, -0/+15Web 2.0 not paying the bills?
- 4321234, on 11/07/2009, -0/+12Digg> Tech News> Digg Now Suckier With Huge Annoying Ads.
- Kronos6948, on 11/07/2009, -0/+11Thank you very much. I don't mind the black background as much to the huge mug of some stupid video game character that no one really gives a rats ass about.
- gdo01, on 11/07/2009, -0/+11It's actually the Tech Industry News page and all of that section's articles.
http://digg.com/tech_news - qwer777, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9ok. kinda annoying.
- Mr_Lyle, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8Since this seems to be the bitching about digg section for today...Does anyone else get a solid 5-7 second "hang" from the time you click a link on digg until it actually start loading the page you clicked on? Clicking between categories is turning into a nightmare.
It started about a week ago. I'm wondering if it has something to do with all the ads. - the8thbit, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8It's an ad for a video game. Why is this in Tech and not in Gaming?
- shuukiru, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6WTF? wtf, wtf.
wtf.. omg. wtf.
WTF. - KibibyteBrain, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Maybe if it didn't have some huge face as part of it. Quite distracting. And if this is an attempt to get past ad-blocking software I'm sure that will be futile too.
- angrytortilla, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Aw, you guys all look so skinny now! Skinny comments!
- unluckier, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Don't ask questions you don't want to hear the answer to.
- palmer, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4Ummmm, no.
- 4321234, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4http://digg.com/d319P0k
- factsahoy, on 11/07/2009, -2/+6I particularly enjoy how links clicked in other apps will launch Firefox but not navigate to the linked page. And how log-ins and other persistent data aren't stored anymore.
- wpf999, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4Really annoying background ad. Gross and distracting. Digg has turned into MySpace. Can't you at least put something relevant for tech blog readers?
- qwer777, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3wonder if adding http://cotnet.diggstatic.com will work safetly.
- Catchpen, on 11/08/2009, -0/+2Hey cool it's like we're in a gamerz forum brah! Can I put my OC specs in my sig Kev?
- qwer777, on 11/07/2009, -1/+3seems to be just this one too. wonder why.
- MemoryDump, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1you know.. ads like this can be offensive for some younger people (even the older).. it's not just adults who surf the web, nor digg.. having "graphic" ads like this shouldn't be permitted on a sites like digg. kinda disappointed in digg
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/08/2009, -1/+1Nonsense, he can know how advertisers are bypassing his web browsers' pop up window blockers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_ad#Circumventi ...
As explained on the web page cited above, they use Adobe Flash or other technologies.
A plugin or signed ActiveX control can basically do anything and do so without the browser's permission/awareness. An ActiveX control, you gave YOUR permission to do Everything when you downloaded it or ran it the first time, usually.
ActiveX is only supported by the IE browser though. Last time I checked it will not affect Firefox or Safari, even on MS-Windows. Those two web browsers just support plugins - not ActiveX.
Lots of browsers have Flash preinstalled these days. In fact, it is becoming comon for the two biggest commercial operating systems to come with it pre-installed.
For some reason, Apple included it in Snow Leopard (10.6 Mac OS X) that was just released this summer and Microsoft is including it on their "Microsoft signature" PCs they sell.
Flash burns CPU time when Flash components are loaded and it burns more while they are running. Flash does not seem to have any kind of a Dashboard that tells how many or what Flash components are running on each tab or window of your web browser, nor how much memory and CPU time they are burning.
Worse, Flash seems to get exploited by hackers a lot. And yes, for years advertisers have been bypassing pop up blockers by simply using Flash to pop up a Window.
Look into using Firefox more and using NoScript and perhaps Adblock Plus addons. Or, if you use Safari on the Macintosh (not sure about on MS-Windows) you can get the Click To Flash WebKit plugin. It blocks flash initially but still allows you to let it run in cases where you want it too. Its name tells you how.
Click To Flash has another benefit. For services like YouTube, you can let the service know you want to see the video it is offering you in H.264 rather than Flash format. H.264 is probably safer for your computer and smoother display to you. I may be wrong but I suspect that the H.264 video probably gobbles fewer resources than Flash too. - javaroast, on 11/08/2009, -2/+2"We spiked the vampire"
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/08/2009, -2/+1Not in volleyball.
When you reach up and smack the ball almost straight down onto your opponents side of the net from up close to it, that is called a "spike".
Nice call though, regardless. It certainly is an ambiguously worded title. Readers do not like those. People who do not read the article, just the title, might walk away with the wrong message too. - dawngordon, on 11/08/2009, -8/+1my husband made me take firefox off, our computer fried from it a few years ago
- 2goats1tub, on 11/07/2009, -10/+2But then again this is Firefox, so they won't tell you about the hundreds of stability bugs they added.

What is Digg?
