google man - qeek, on 10/12/2007, -15/+50I see nothing wrong in promoting their own products on their own websites... hell, Google's a company too.
- DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33I will never loose faith in Google, or any other big company for that matter.
I will always have faith that they will do whatever makes them the most money. - ionut, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Link to his post: http://www.blakeross.com/2006/12/25/google-tips/
- DiggTheWii, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29I say "big deal".
Type in "photo sharing". Look at that size of the Picasa logo! If you weren't looking for it to start with, you might miss it completely!
Google has prided themselves on helping people who might not be too accustomed to using the Internet anyway. Google Calendar, Blogger, and Picasa are three services that are extremely easy to use.
Seriously, if you are Googling "photo sharing", you are probably looking for somewhere to share your photos in the first place. It seems to me like it is only Google being helpful and promoting themselves at the same time.
What killed Yahoo is that butt ugly interface. Google is so nice and simplistic... - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24The way to deal with a dupe does not involve the comments. I'll give you a clue, there's a nice lil' drop down box somewhere around here...

Bush isn't making the information publicly available and universally accessible. Also, wiretapping is CREATING information, Google just organizes existing information. - umbriago, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29Hot damn, this is the break Ask Jeeves has been waiting for!

Your abusing the reply to do something everyone hates. - Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Google organizes data and references things and other data people have voluntarily put out onto the web. Wiretapping picks off data between private communication or communication between two parties that I did not agree they could have. They also put you on nice little lists that don't let you fly on planes and possibly jail time. Last I checked, Google hasn't arrested anyone recently :p
- sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I wouldnt say just as slimy but not totally clean either.
Some of the reason they are so popular is that they have been just a bit less slimy than others.
But I am sure many of you can point out many times they havent quite followed the mantra "dont be evil" - SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10No AJAX, though. I'd digg it just for that if AJAX was in there.
- SectorNation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If Blake is so bent out of shape then why does he still contribute to Firefox when Mozilla does the same thing promoting Thunderbird at every turn? Whether it IS a superior mailer is irrelevent, my only point is the guy's got some weird double-standard about organizations with multiple product lines and services recommending each other. Who DOESN'T do that? "e.g. Do you want fries with that?"
Cry me a river, Blake. - fuckingusername, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9OMG this is on the INQUIRER didn't they say hackers can blow up your computer and burn your house down?
- northernstar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I do enjoy smelling Google's *****.
- chiefwahoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A little self promotion is to be expected, and is not a sign that a company is selling out. Funny that when Apple plugs their own products no one cares and it is considered excellent advertising, yet when any other corporation does it they are evil and money grubbers. IMHO, Yahoo! was not successful with their product self promotion mainly because the search feature was not as comprehensive as Google's and therefore people did not trust the results.

> Well he should have never had "faith" in google in the first place. Lookup the definition of "faith."
Well, perhaps the Inquirer used the word "faith" and not me. Perhaps.
> Perhaps Picasa shows up when you search for photo software, because Picasa infact is quite popular due to the fact it's actually decent and free.
The purpose of the article was that that is clearly not the reason. Picasa is pages and pages behind in the natural search results. So there is no "perhaps" about why Picasa appears when you search "photo sharing"--it is there because Google put it there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Well he should have never had "faith" in google in the first place. Lookup the definition of "faith." You could say, however, that he lost belief that google was a well moralled company with the best intentions in finding success in alternate programs than utilizing their own utilities to gain market share. Ultimately, this is a common business practice and should not be taken to heart. Perhaps Picasa shows up when you search for photo software, because Picasa infact is quite popular due to the fact it's actually decent and free.
Boo flippin hoo. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12didn't Microsoft get sued for $500 million for doing the same thing?
funny how things looks from the other side isn't it. - blakeross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Daniel591992: The keywords need to be lowercased to trigger the tip ads.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It really doesn't bother me. Google for Calendar, you get a small little ad that is marked as a "tip" and not part of the regular search results.
I'm not paying for a site that I use probably close to 100 times every week and has made my life so much easier. I'm not going to complain about a half a line of text. - invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i'm afraid of filthy spammers :-(
ahhh.. look what i found :-) a little button that says "Block/Report this User"
the day is saved! - raynevandunem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5As that piece of software has Google's involvement and patronage,
and makes money through Google's search results,
and is constantly being offered by Google's ads (Firefox + Google Toolbar),
it matters a whole ***** lot what this guy thinks in regards to his project's relations with Google, since he happens to be a leading developer and co-founder for that project.
Shut the ***** up, please. - Mudbeast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dude, is being anti-google your whole life? Do you actually wait around for it to fail looking at your watch?
Google is an excellent search engine. If you know of an equal or better one then I'll use it exclusively. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The problem with storing data forever is the government knows this too and, in its thirst for more power, will get this information. First they try to get email/search terms for terrorists. Then once that works, they try this for spammers. Then pornographers. Then everyday people in say divorce proceedings - the judge might think your email stored at google might have something relevant to the case.
Google can resist for so long. The correct thing to do would be to not record so much info, 30 day cookies ,etc. - Perno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Odds are, people that are going to Google in the first place would love to try any of Google's "tips". Myself included. Me likey Google, even though they're the next evil empire.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5BLOWN OVER PORTION.
see it for your self
google "search" the first one listed is msn
google "stock quote" you get yahoo finance
google "email" you get yahoo e-mail
true if you google something like photo sharing you get something on the top that says tip. but is clear to the user that is not a result to the search and google is not trying to make it seem like it either. - monofonik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Who gives a ***** WHAT Blake Ross thinks? He's just a kid who helped develop a piece of software. It just so happens that I and most of the rest of you are using that piece of software right now. But does that ***** mean anything? No. I really just don't care what his opinion is.
- kroenecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google is FREE.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@chris9902
did microsoft get sued for including their other software with their OS, or for adding a tip to go download it?
i can't believe how people all of the sudden "lose trust" in google for making recommendations for other free google services! if they didn't put the tips there, you kids would be digging articles about this "hidden extra google service" and begging for invites!! but noooo, since google wants to let average joe know about other free services, they're -- *shudder* -- evil! - Vokas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, that is the Enquirer.
- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@blake, if you want to be heard for what you have to say and not who you are, it's time to start writing under a pseudonym.
- BionicAntboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've only noticed the google tips a few times (I guess I'm not often searching for terms that match the Tips formula) but found them somewhat annoying, mainly because of their location. Sandwiched between ads and results is an iffy spot.
Conversely, there's nothing wrong with a company promoting their own stuff, but as it stands the "tips" aren't disambiguated enough. They'd bug me hella less if they were either in one of the "Sponsored Links" sections, or better yet, in a separate box that intersects at the upper right hand of the screen where the top ads and side ads intersect. - CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8from the first line of the second paragraph:
"Writing in his bog"
hehe, interesting typo.. - igotnothing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Finally people are starting to see Google as what they are...a great search, with their own interests at heart. If Microsoft did this...wow...the world would down on them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Honestly, I have also been re-thinking my enthusiasm for the search engine giant. In the last couple of months I have had a couple of very bad experiences using Google services. I wrote the company numerous emails and found that the only response I received was an automated one. In fact, I have never had any 'real' contact with anyone at Google other than responses from automated systems.... which I don't consider 'real' contact.
One of the complaints I had was over the use of their custom search engine building tools... where you can build a specific search around one site or a number of sites on similar topics. I spent a couple of days building a specific search site that was NOT in violation of any of Googles terms of use. I gave credit to Google and had my 'powered by Google' images and such all in place. The search engine was working for about a week... when all of the sudden it just didn't work anymore. So I went in to check my settings and I found that Google had simply deleted the site from within the admin interface they provided. So I sent a few emails to support with absolutely nothing whatsoever of a response. Nothing!
So I lost two days of my time using Google tools and they can't even send me a response as to what happened? Nothing... no call, no email, no nothing... that was pretty disappointing. - talcyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Evil is justified, sometimes, according to when we say so"
Isn't that the new corporate mantra? - tackle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was expecting to see several.. "It is ok because it is Google" comments and you guys haven't let me down. Mad Props to you all.
- Tanath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"All that "do no evil" talk was actually just a big puff of smoke blown up our asses."
Get a clue. Google started the whole "do no evil" motto as a private company. They have since gone public and are now beholden to their share holders (by law). They still try to live up to that motto (and do a good job of it), as it's one of the reasons Google is so successful, but a motto is a statement of intention and at the time it was made it was true, and still is now, thus not a lie. - tlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. This article is terrible.
2. Yeah, its true, google provides links to its services that are relevant to your search (ie if you search calendar, yes they will have a hit for google calendar)...
3. The inquirer.net is not a very good site.
Buried as lame. - tensvb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You forgot about collaborating with Chinese regime.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google is bound to make mistakes just like any other company.
- blakeross, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I agree. I'd rather people digg my posts because they find them interesting than because of a meaningless title. (Is "Firefox Man" some new action figure?)
- Taorluath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Viva el Google!
- RobertBogley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course - sorry - its almost "too obvious" that I forgot about it
I'm sure theres more - philovivero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5""Google is a corporation and is just as slimy as every other Mega corp
FACT like it or not""
Calling ***** FACT doesn't make it a fact. Google is no-where near as slimy as every other megacorp. I'm actually struggling to think of any stories that would make you come to the conclusion that they're even half as bad as, for example, Microsoft or Sony, or 1/10,000th as bad as, say, Halliburton.
Perhaps you could give us some references to the facts that show your brilliance? Because I'm not seeing any. - xoe26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I noticed that too.. It's amazing that all the other commentors didn't notice as its in the second sentence. Are people commenting on an article without actually reading it?
