- leodavinci, on 10/11/2007, -3/+99For those looking for a better web browser now, take a look at Opera. They have a mobile edition that I use on my Windows Mobile phone. Has the ability for tabs and does a much better job over IE.
On the desktop I like Firefox over Opera, it will be interesting to see if they can beat out Opera in the mobile area as well.
This will be a huge development for the open source phone movement to. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -20/+99Thanks but my cellphone doesn't have 100MB of RAM for firefox to eat.
- colin409, on 10/13/2007, -3/+35The new Opera 4 beta 2 will be hard to beat, can't wait to try out the Firefox though.
- DietMountainDew, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Hopefully it is nothing like Minimo:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
I've tried it on two different devices, and it takes nearly all of the RAM and CPU, and still runs like crap.
I would also recommend Opera Mini Beta 2, full page views with zoom like the iPhone, no extra costs involved. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -18/+42I don't want a memory leak on my iPhone :(
- elvisjulep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I agree with a lot of the previous posters...Opera is far ahead on this front. I like FF, but unless the mozilla project does something super spectacular, they're going to have a hard time topping Opera.
- FyberOptic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Opera can afford to give away their desktop browser these days due to the very fact that their embedded product line is doing so great. There is no way Firefox can compete against code so highly optimized, and against a company that has proven innovative time and time again. They put Opera on the Wii, even. Firefox is sluggish at best even on the PC, where as Opera has always been blazing fast. Just look at Firefox's massive system requirements, especially considering the fact that it's a barebones browser out of the box. That's not including the ram and speed loss when extensions are added. Its very nature simply prevents it from being compact and efficient. The only way Firefox could enter the mobile arena is if they completely rewrote the thing. Opera maintains versions for multiple processors and architectures, so there's really no reason why Firefox couldn't do the same, if it were written better from the start. But then it wouldn't be Firefox anymore, would it?
- FTLJohnson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18I wonder if Apple will finally get to feel what it's like to be Microsoft, when Mozilla Sues them for bundling Safari with the iPhone, and not "allowing competing browsers" like Firefox into the mobile internet device world.
Call me Dvorak-like... but that's my prediction. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Actually, that's not why he doesn't allow us to run 3rd party apps at all. You're just a jealous bastard who knows nothing at all.
- rspeed, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17I don't know when that was, but it's free now.
- RBotros, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Let's face it, people who prefer firefox do that because of the extensibility. Opera is faster, richer with features and smarter with memory management. So on a mobile device, Firefox just can't win the battle.
- fiddelm3742, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I'm waiting patiently for Opera Mobile 9
- sulteth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Opera Mobile still costs money and is an actual web browser. Opera mini is free but requires every web page to be run through opera's servers to re-format the page and shrink images for the device's screen.
- gweedo767, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I think the better question is why would you want that? Sure I run Firefox on my desktop machine, but Opera on the Wii is fully optimized for the Wii and works great.
- shortarabguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Same here, it's like it just takes up physical memory and then keeps it, but doesn't use it, instead taking more still when it calls for it.
- doom2quake, on 10/11/2007, -14/+25Opera looks like a lean and mean browser unlike ff (atleast for me memory is valuable, when ur browser eats 150mb you know something has not been done right). Hopefully mobile firefox will bring in some memory optimizations ...
- doobydoo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15They've had a mobile browser out called MiniMo and it is terrible!! It's poorly designed, slow, and a resource hog, much like its big brother. I admire the Mozilla organization and the achievements of Firefox, so I use it on my PC. But, it has its faults. Between extensions and the browser itself, it eats tons of memory. It's hard to get excited for any mobile release from these guys, for now.
On a fast connection on Windows Mobile, it's hard to beat Opera 9 or pIE (with a few downloadable tweaks) for speed and formatting. Opera Mini is great for cell phones or slower connections (since it goes through intermediary servers). On Palm, you have no real alternative but Blazer, which is OK, but dated. Safari on iphone will be a clear winner in usability once the phone is 3G. - danielg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Opera Mini is free! (http://www.operamini.com)
- 04TL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12i agree...i use Opera on my Nokia 6233 and it is great...works just like a desktop web browser, just on a smaller screen...
- danielg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12There is still Opera Mini, which is less than a 100k download.
- FrogMuffin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Opera Mobile is _not_ free. It's $24 now, according to their website. You guys must be thinking of OperaMini. Opera Mobile for Pocket PC is only free for 30 days.
- negativefx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12i forgot, iphones are the only phones that matter
- Metoz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Opera Mini all the way.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Not with th econtract Nintendo made with Opera. At least not until people find a way to get their own apps to be installed as a channel on the Wii.
- fugazied, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Sorry, I don't need my phone crashing too.
Firefox sure has lost the plot with their software, of all the software on my mac, FF is the only one that crashes on a regular basis. Same thing happens for the guy next to me on Gentoo and the other guy in the office on Windows. Huzzah FF you made a browser that crashes equally well on 3 platforms. I am literally forced to use FF for web development (the mods are incredible), so have to put up with the issues.
But if Opera gets web dev toolbar and a few other things I'm switching. - iparker, on 10/19/2007, -4/+12Should of started doing this a while ago..
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8lol, you act like they're going to port a few lines of code and be done.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I don't like Opera Mobile. I prefer Opera Mini 4 Beta 2. It's a lot better than Opera Mobile. The Razr V3xx has Opera integrated and it's similar to Opera Mobile but after installing Opera Mini 4, I used that primarily. Now I use the AT&T Tilt (Tytn II) but I find my self using the J2ME version rather than WM6.
- z3r0c0O1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8IMO they need to work on their browser on a normal computer before going to Phones, at least get Firefox 3.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7That's a good point but Microsoft has a ridiculous market share with Windows while Apple doesn't with the iPhone.
- lcmatt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+81. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in “about:config” (without the inverted commas) and then press “Enter”.
2. “Right Click” in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize” (without the inverted commas) and press “Enter”.
4. Select “True” and then press “Enter” again. / Restart Firefox.
Every time you minimize Firefox will reduce its memory to around 6mb - richieforeman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Sweetness! Now my phone can crash in style too! ZOMG!
- dgath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Read the article, he says Minimo was an experiment and won't be developed any further.
- KevinRoseMustDy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11... Why?
- skyshock1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Too late, Opera's already on the phone and performs marvelously well. FF runs like absolute sludge on any platform I've ever used it on (windows, mac, *nix, bsd, etc..) so a big NO THANK YOU for FF mobile.
- FingersMckenzie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7...(64 MB of DRAM seems to be the minimum that will be required)...
Well looks like I can forget the idea of firefox on my phone. Takes me ages to start solitaire; I don't want to know how long it'll take to launch firefox. - CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Firefox eats my RAM. I have to shut it down a couple of times a day.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7lolz, pay for software? oh, lordy...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Same here. It's a learned habit on Digg.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah, web browsing companies quickly learned how much the likes of Google, Yahoo, and/or Microsoft would pay to get searches from them, from being "baked-in".
- DMXell, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Firefox runs like crap on older hardware, and now they expect it to run on a phone? Good luck with that, I'll just stick to Opera mobile.
- justintime32, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, Firefox is taking up 160 MB of memory right now. They absolutely need to fix the memory leaks on the mobile version.
- DarkShroud, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Dugg for all the Pro Opera comments. Opera 9.5 Alpha is amazingly fast at loading pages (digg).
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Damn you Alltel, forcing us to use your stupid "Axcess" apps and locking down our phones. (or at least mine) :(
- mishsquish, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5When I think of Firefox, I get an erection.
- shaun3000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but Firefox really is ***** on OS X. And Camino seems pointless, to me. It doesn't support Firefox extensions and uses the same crappy rendering engine as Firefox 2 does, so why would I use it over Safari? The fact that Firefox looks like ***** on OS X is the most obvious proof that it hasn't been optimized for that OS like it has for Windows and Linux. Firefox SMOKES on Windows and seems to run just as well on Linux. I'm not sure why they put such little effort into the OS X port.
- russelbutt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3opera ftw.. i've been using the mini 4 beta 2 on my sony ericsson k800i ever since i got it a while back.. vastly superior browser..
- FTLJohnson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Don't forget that the iPod touch is also a wifi device with browsing capabilities... It may not be long before Apple has a commanding market share in .. well palmtop (or at least palmtop-like) devices.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I am a little skeptical about Firefox on the mobile.
- mymate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i use operamini 4 beta 2, possibly best mobile application made for ALL phones, because im an avid firefox user i would definately be trying it! as im sure everyone who uses firefox would.
