- egbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+75'...a Microsoft official at CES told them that work has already begun for IE 8 and it may be released as a final product "within 18-24 months".'
I guess that means we will not have to worry about it for another 36-48 months. - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Netscape: You can't win Bill, if you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine!
Darth Bill: Foolish browser...bzzzzzzzzt.
FireFox: BING! 'Sup *****?! :)
Darth Bill: (&*^%#&^%()*&)#(*&*&^$ - LiveFastDieOld, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Flexibility is great, in browsers and in humans. Sure, fine, whatever. But as a longtime Firefox fan, I just pray to God they do something about the excessive memory leaks. I expected Firefox 2 to address the problem, but instead, it just got worse.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28It confuses me why you guys like to rag on MS for making IE insecure, yet you don't like to see them update it.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18There was a HUGE gap between IE6 and IE7. During that time, many other browsers improved years beyond IE. Once FF3 comes out, it will be fully ACID2 compliant and (essentially) fully CSS2 compliant. Once that happens, every major browser but IE will be able to pass the acid test and be standards compliant. IE is far away from compliant. As a web developer, I've found it easy to make FF, Opera, Konqueror, and Safari all look the same with the same code, but IE still needs hacks (although only minor ones in 7)
If IE wants to keep up with the game, they'll have to release IE8 in less than a year. - ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20FireFox 3 automatically uninstalls IE (any flavor). What a dream...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15funny how previous to FF3 alpha the acid2 test was "just a test that doesn't really matter"
now all of the sudden it does and "oh man look we do it way better than IE!"
no mention of opera being able to do it for ages, vs firefox's weeks - Brahma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Firefox 3 is code named as "Gran Paradiso".
For the interested "Gran Paradiso" is the highest mountain group in the Graian Alps, located in the Aosta Valley region of north-west Italy.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Seriously, give me a reason instead of telling me just to switch.
I don't have a problem with viruses or spyware. My system never crashes. I havent seen a BSOD in about 5 years. I don't have to use IE if I dont want to. I can play tons of games, and my computer is cheaper to upgrade. I have office and more. I can run photoshop. The only thing I DONT have is money to flush down the *****. - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Personally I find MAC addresses to be quite difficult to memorize.
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not to start the proverbial browser war or anything, but Safari has been acid2 compliant for 2 years or so. And I think that means Konqueror became acid2 compliant with it, as they both use the khtml rendering engine.
- Metasquares, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why does the article equate "better browser" with "faster AJAX apps"? There are many other features that define a good browser.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I blocked that douchenozzle ages ago...why haven't you? :-)
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"funny how previous to FF3 alpha the acid2 test was "just a test that doesn't really matter""
By all means, correct me if I'm wrong ... but the FF team never said Acid2 doesn't matter. Passing Acid2 was always a goal, but it took a significant refactoring of Gecko's document reflow code. (Do a search for "firefox reflow branch.") This code has existed for a while, but they couldn't (or just didn't) land it on the trunk until recently.
Now ... the IE team *did* effectively say that Acid2 "doesn't really matter." But that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I am posting from my Commodore C64! No, seriously...I am.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10If only the same logic worked for human
- wonklit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I hope they follow some sort of standards. I'm sick of developing for multiple browsers.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Pet Peeve: Apple fanboys spelling "Mac" in all caps.
Grrrr.... - nubnub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ywong137 - Press Shift Ctrl W...
- redavni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I disagree with the author's guess that IE8 will be focusing on proprietary features. The IE team at Microsoft these days is very different from the old IE team.
The IETeam blog is a good source for IE info.

Umm... 234/365 = 77.8%
That means roughly, 8 out of everyone 10 days you were browsing with IE, you were vulnerable to some exploit or another that was a result of some flaw in Internet Explorer. Why would anyone want to use that, let alone update it? By the way, a large number of their updates were not for the immediate flaw at the time and others would only introduce new flaws (hence the 234 days of flaws)
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2007/01/internet_explorer_unsafe_for_2.html (Google "days IE was vulnerable") - drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Am I the only one that thought "Final Fantasy 3" when I read FF3 in the article?
- level, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I was a loyal firefox user until IE7 came out and Firefox 2.0 was released. I think the interface is just so much nicer with IE7 and it loads up so much faster and is not near as buggy or crashes. I use IE7 pretty much exlusively now. The phising filter works great. It caught one the other day. Also, the tabs are nice and quick to use. Just not feeling firefoxs outdated look anymore. IE7 was really creative on the layout. It took few times to get used to it and actually start to appreciate it.

"I'm a big MAC guy"
Extra sauce? - jantzen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6as long as they adhere closely to the same web standards, I'll be happy :)
- Solan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I would like Firefox to first fix MEMORY issues and frustratingly SLOW STARTUP and PERFORMANCE issues rather than add any new features.
- rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And a completely new drawing mechanism plus a ***** load of fixed bugs... *cough*
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"When will people quit talking out of their asses just to get dugg"
While they may be talking out of their asses in this instance, the iPhone turned out to be real. - nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6is the speculation on digg ever going to end. I've had to put up with it for 2 weeks with this iphone, now this. When will people quit talking out of their asses just to get dugg
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5ditto for the exclusive use bit. IE's starting creeping back into my sphere for the first time in years. It's less painful to use IE7 than it is to use FF.
- ShadowKlown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol I like how everyone keeps mentioning how IE is hooked into the windows system, that's why it loads faster. IE7 isn't integrated throughout the OS anymore... Personally I use it over FF now concidering I've never had IE crash and lose every bookmark and setting I had...Or had the window literally 'shake' when it opens? Lol
IE Hacks? My CSS compliant site looks almost the same in IE and FF... So I don't know what ya'll are talking about. - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7The people that made IE6 are so old now that they are all living in retirement homes.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is one of the oft-repeated arguments on digg these days.
FF vs. IE
Win vs. Mac
Mac vs. Linux
I-Phone vs. Using that money to put your kids through college.
...And I just found a fun new thing, thanks to a commenter in another story.
http://googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=Firefox&word2=Internet+Explorer - fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i dunno wats wrong with ur pc, but on mine firefox loads quicker than ie7 which takes waaay 2 long to start up
- kavaliro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IE7 and IE8 are the Microsoft equivalent of sending in 20,000 more troops. It's too little, too late, with no real plan for victory. (although, at least there's a clear definition of what "victory" would mean in Microsoft's case...)
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hope that FF moves away from integrating more Google services. The instant FF becomes the GBrowser I permanently switch to Opera.
- wmhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2End User Stability Airbag P2
Is this for real? Or just a joke?
For those who did not read the Wiki:
An airbag designed for a user to do the job of stability. Will be in the second "tier" of things worked on in the project. - rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MrViklund, you sir, are an idiot.
- jhaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@agabara:
Ha, I completely missed that passage as I was reading. Sorry.
But in order to save face, and not admit that I was wrong (:p), I'll make a witty comeback:
Yeah, but who actually believes that MS will release it on time? How long has Vista been "just around the corner"? - loof, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Competition does that. There was no reason for Microsoft to spend massive amounts of money on IE since they pretty much owned the browser market. IE had some problems but no one was challenging their status so there was no reason to fix them. Not a good way to make people happy but it makes good business sense. Once ff came along and started taking away market share MS got together and came up with a very nice update to IE.
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2CBTF, can you specify for me what security issues and holes they fixed with IE7? Except for the ones in IE6. IE7 was a "browser update" where they added a stunning phishing filter (and some other features seen in FF and Opera for years)... And the crowd goes wow!
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1alot quicker they have a reason to update now
- rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can't complain if you haven't reported your issues, which I doubt any of you have. At least if you find someone else has reported the issue you're experiencing you can vote for it...
It is more often than not something wrong with the computer/os or an extension playing up. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"If IE wants to keep up with the game, they'll have to release IE8 in less than a year."
Since when does Microsoft care about "keeping up with the game" in web browsers? They have the default-installed browser on the 90% market share operating system. The game is already over. Microsoft won. Internet users (all of us) lost.
How many people still use IE6 and think it's "just fine" or even "great?" Far, far too many. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure what you mean... drag racing? If it doesn't run fast on your system check several oher systems, if you still think there's a problem look through the support to see if anyone else is having it, if not report it.
Have you updated? - flake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wonder why ppl are digging you down? Also funny how this blog writter guesses that IE8 will change direction and become more proprietary. In fact, IE7 was a lot about increasing CSS compatability. Unfortunatly, it was out of development for so long that major efforts had to go into UI feature parity instead of improving the rendering engine. Anyone who's read even a simidgen of the IE7 team blog would know that one of the main goles of IE8 is to break new ground in CSS compatability which means complete CSS2 support and hopefully a good portion of CSS3
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Opera > IE7
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hm. You think MS would be happy with being able to say "You're using [alternative browser], so go call THEIR tech support." As it comes free with the expensive OS, I've never quite figured out why they care what their marketshare is. Surely the default MSN search through the titlebar (at least on IE6) doesn't come close to making up for the bad publicity they tend to receive about IE and all of their security flaws and Keeping Up With The Foxes "new" features.
