- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -16/+45Off-topic, but it needs to be said...
I can only assume that that this thread, like others before, is the target of some "digg down" script. There's only one positive comment so far, and I'm pretty damn sure even Digg doesn't have enough losers to sit here and digg down every comment within seconds of its being posted.
There's an obvious problem here, and it needs to be fixed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14You guys need to stop digging each other down. When I see a page where 90% of the comments are hidden, I go WTF? and then I tell it to show all. So by digging down everyone, you just make it so that everyone's comments are seen, even the really retarded ones.
- tofuComputer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Who the ***** came through and buried everyone's comments??
*****. - SatanicPengiuns, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Guess ill go head and jump on the digg me down train.
- Catchpen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3***** (singular). Some asshat with multiple user accounts. Trolling 2.0
- suntereo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm guessing jm1234567890 dugg everyone down... his is the only comment left! And +46... whoah!
- QurrUm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Heh, yeah, I'm using Opera. Firefox is too slow for me.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2this comment would have been funny if it was the first comment. being that its the 107th, it loses its comic appeal.
dugg down. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3No.
- jsanders, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3digg me down too!
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4The downloads for Firefox include the people who have to download it again because the installer is horrible. In reality only 500,000 unique downloads have been made of Firefox.
- internetworld7, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Long Live The Fox Baby! Opera Sucks!
- tcomputerchip, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I'm on the bench for this one, well kinda. If Microsoft wanted more downloads then it would allow it's software to be distributed to OS X. The underlining problem is Microsoft could not afford to make or distribute to a platform that is not windows. As no one will come for IE. Hence the reason for no more support on OS X.
I think it's a good comparison (regardless of dmg/exe/tar) because Microsoft chooses not to compete as they know they will get beet. -had to do some crappy joke somewhere
As for firefox, I use it all time ... that because I dont get damn pop-ups and spyware. That's the best part. I also feel a bit more secure with a browser that is viewed and tested by some of the top hackers of the industry. IE7 gets tested by MSDN subscribers in a closed network. Firefox get benchmarked from millions all the time before a new release.
You can draw your own conclusions to what browser is better, - thefinger, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Nope! the people haven't spoken-- the basement dwellers have, however. :-)
Seriously, sometimes I just love coming here to read things. Other times I could just throttle the minors that seem to make up most of this landfill called Digg.
Also, someone (or lots of people) talked about the way this place seems to be rigged. It probably is. But I suppose anyone can game Digg, provided they have a lot of free time, are sufficiently immature, and have no qualms about playing the system like a video game.
One thing I have noticed, especially after visiting Netscape.com, is that the quality of stories is more mature there. Digg, on the other hand, seems to have been taken over by the sort of people who don't wash their hands after taking a crap.
2c - TotalBiscuit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1hahahahahaha, are the hackers trying to stop us using Firefox or something?
DIGG ME DOWN TOO, I WANNA JOIN IN!!
Firefox 2 is really good
lol, wouldnt if be so funny if its Microsoft doing it - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2When I see a page where 90% of the comments are hidden, I tell it to show all and I start to digg down every comments.
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Go Firefox,
what else do i have to say? - falcyn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4People have to realize the audience of Firefox consists of plenty of techno-savvy people, whereas the majority of those using IE are certainly not - therefore, people using Firefox are going to KNOW there's a new version almost immediately - whereas people using IE are often going to get it either by Windows Update or not at all. And those numbers aren't being considered here.
I'd venture to say very few people actually downloaded IE7 manually. I sure didn't. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13@G33k0ft3chz: Microsoft hasn't forced anyone to upgrade to IE7. That comes November 1st, and even then you can choose not to upgrade if you have Automatic Updates set to ask before updating.
- aguilr, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9You know what, the best thing here is that the new FF is getting a very warm welcome and that the IE people have a browser that is more respectful of web standards. That right there is the real win, especially for all the fellow web developers out there.
- gu014, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3i attempted to download IE7(just to take a ganders) and gave up on two occasions as the installation stalled for over 15 minutes both times while it was checking for some sort of update. i waited patiently both times but just could not take it when the 16th minute came upon me.....
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4IE is more popular than FF and always will be as long as it comes installed with Windows. Dumba--es
- green67, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6only one +digg on the whole page??this is wierd..I think Cl1mh4224rd is right.Now watch me be buried.
- tcomputerchip, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3The security flaws you mention have been patched as soon as they are known.
And the same goes for IE. This flaw is also not reproducible on all machines. You have a clear bias towards IE. I have no direct bias towards either browser. Being a software programmer, I know it's impossible to patch and fix every bug or vulnerability. Anything in the mainstream is vulnerable to attach from people willing to do so.
I hope the numbers of users on Firefox stay exactly at what they are bringing in small percents. It will keep my copy of Firefox very secure.
And your list, I think is funny because it's not nearly as long as the updates that IE get's. Have you ever checked your logs on windows, I bet you have about 200+ updates for IE that automatically install every time you login/out. These are considered a NON threat in Microsoft's eyes. On linux or OS X you would be clearly notified of any and all installs or updates. That, in its self seems to be a problem to me. But I will let others be the judge.
I have one question, would you give your keys to your car to a person that is just walking by your house and is dressed in nice cloths? I know I don't, and I ask questions before I do. And if I were you, I would ask Microsoft why they need to make updates that dont notify me of the update (by default). - metalmallow, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7Holy *****. 90% of this page is buried comments.
- danboarder, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6That's hardly a solution for most people... A better way might be for developers to actually make apps that use the space on the screen better.
For example, on OS X it doesn't help that the Dock is across the bottom by default. On a Macbook, which doesn't have very high resolution, the Dock and browser chrome don't leave much room for the actual webpage (or document in other apps). - benc, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8"The people have spoken"? Not really. Like it or not, the majority of users don't really care about the browser wars, and will continue to use whatever's on their computer. More often than not, that's going to be IE for quite some time.
The early adopters have certainly spoken, though. Myself, I've loaded Firefox 2 on all the PCs I use daily, and IE 7 on none of them. - asuraci, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6What the crap? Some people are getting trigger-happy on the thumbs-down button. Some of these people have valid points.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -23/+18Ok, do you really think that download count for two new browser releases in the first 3 days can really be a representation of their eventual market share in 3 , 6 months ? This story is useless. Do you think that maybe Firefox users are a tad bit more hardcore fan boys maybe?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -26/+2090% of the world hasn't even heard about IE7 or Firefox 2. Those that have are mainly geeks and we're not exactly representative of the general population.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2If you digg me down, You are accepting the fact you are gay
- digg0digg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2583846480316559002
- suntereo, on 10/12/2007, -19/+12I just made the switch to FireFox after years of IE. What finally did it for me was the sluggishness of IE7 and the goofy layout. I think they really alienated their user base by making such drastic changes to their GUI. Anyway, I'm now using FireFox and LOVE it. I also love all the pluggins that let me tweak the thing to death. One of my favorites is Platypus (a GreaseMonkey script editor) which lets me easily remove banners, tweak settings, etc, from my favorite pages. And how cool is it to have it automatically check my spelling as I type this comment. WOW--I even sound like a FireFox marketer now!
- kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -17/+10None. Only existing IE7 Beta users received notifications to download via AU.
EDIT: Why are so many on-topic comments being buried? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4why digg theegeek down he's raised a valid point lol
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6the market condition with browsers is os installed browser (IE) to user initiated download (Firefox, Opera etc). The native one will always win out due to user apathy. I am sorry this is a historical fact of the market. When Google OS comes out maybe then they can control it with FF. Mod me down again but I am a FF2 user majority of the time, its just the facts. Microsoft has done just enough to keep apathy levels high (tabs addition, web 2.0 fades, some RSS work, slight update to rendering), then they auto download it to you and they control 90%+ of the desktops out there.
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Anyone saying FF is more popular than IE is an obvious freaking liar fanboy. I use FF, know lots of others that do but NO ONE is stupid enough to think we're themajority. Don't act like Linux idjits. Accept reality and leave the lies to the other morons.
- Dotnetsky, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3What a total bunch of BS. Use whatever browser you like Webtards.
- r0Ot3d, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Cool bury me as you have done my first comment because I called DUPE.
And you know I was right 7 hours ago and I'm right now. Also the same lame arse comments are being posted; maybe thats why everyone is being modded down.
Nothing *new* to see here move along, though there will be another one of these threads along in a few more hours. And more Firefox>IE7 threads until Firefox3 and IE8 are out. Then we can all start over again. - adiggtion, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6Why isn't FF2 available via "check for updates" yet?
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Yes some people just use what is there. These are the decendants of the AOLers that used the AOL embedded browser for years up until IE5-5.5 and Netscape 6 release when AOL finally put a good browser over their crappy AOL browser. FF market share continues to grow but until it has the OS distro that IE does for average users it will go unnoticed much like Netscape did past version 4. (back then Netscape sucked and IE was developers dreams, Netscape grew u to mozilla nd FF and is now better)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4It's only valid if it's a comment on how awesome Firefox is and how lame IE is.
Or if it's some ***** about how IE only got 3,000,000 people because of Windows Update, which it's not even available on unless you've already got IE7.
Or if it's a comment about how you downloaded Firefox 2.0 once and installed it on your seven million computers and that scenario should be counter - but only for Firefox. - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Countdown to Internet Explorer bashing in 3... 2....
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4You can even use it on the Wii:
http://www.opera.com/products/devices/nintendo/ - davy2002a, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5the version numbers coincide with the number of downloads :P mathematical coincidence?
heh :) - drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I use a different browser everyday so I can find problems on my sites in different browsers. I have to say, I dig both FF2 and IE7 but Opera 9+ is just hands down more functional less bs.
try it it will take 2 minutes
http://www.opera.com/ - xpose, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Firefox auto updates. IE6 does not. Enough said, topic inaccurate.
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Max penetration of FF without OS support is probably around 30-40% of users and that is a high figure. Right now its about 16% of teh browser market, they will still grow but until Google OS they are stuck in teh underdog position. I wish it was diffferent but it isn't. People are habitual and most people only know the internet as an "e" icon sadly.

What is Digg?
