- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -10/+76god. is there ever a non smug mode for you guys?
- controltheweb, on 10/27/2007, -14/+71Use Little Snitch for OSX, or GeekTool for Mac (direct netstat output to your desktop, see all outgoing connections)
- SonnyW, on 10/27/2007, -7/+50Zonealarm itself is worse than anything it might protect you from.
- Scynet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+43You look at it.
Of course, the average user has no clue what connections are valid anyway... - gjscds, on 10/27/2007, -4/+44Yes--because NO viral or spyware code can get around a software firewall like ZoneAlarm !
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25I'm troubled that avast is connecting over and over to hitbox.com.
- fjc8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Not quite. command.com is the old DOS command interpreter which runs in a virtualized real mode, which is why it gives you 8.3 all-capitalized filenames and responds slowly compared to CMD.EXE. CMD.EXE is the modern 32-bit command processor; it's a true Win32 console application, supports long file names, is fast, etc.

- 963369, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19"Hitbox is a tracking cookie that monitors your Internet activity and gathers your personal information as you surf the web. This information may be retrieved by the parent company, without your consent."
http://www.spywareremove.com/removeHitbox.html - 4ndr3w, on 10/27/2007, -1/+17Or you could just use netstat in Terminal.
- lukemandese, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19your computer runs slow, because of porn!
- malaak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14mine secretly connects to surf porn - it's got a hard drive of it's own!
- OpenFuture, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Or just use the packet sniffer Wireshark to monitor whats going on in even more granularity. Heres the link if anyone is curious http://wireshark.org/
- rAid135, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9They do give credit, read the article *****. It's right there at the bottom
- digital81, on 09/05/2008, -1/+9A hardware firewall(which a lot of the nicer routers have built in) works just fine without a software firewall. You just need to do some research and configure it properly. Not for the new users, but for someone who can take the time to read a few pages of information it is a great way to have one less resource hog running on your computer.
- LoveWidescreen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Um ... considering that netstat is a very old command and is used in many different operating systems, the only person who should "get credit" is whoever decided to integrate it into DOS. I've been using netstat in Solaris for many, many years. Since when is reporting a common, if underused, utility blogspam for anyone?
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Who's complaining?
- nogami, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yup, TCPView is the way to go. They have a lot of other great utilities there. It's one of the first things I install on a new machine I set up.
- Annix, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13Well it's admittedly been a fair while since I used ZA, but when I did, it would restrict program access despite "allowing" it in the config, cause awful problems with FTP access, and take up a larger-than-fair chunk of system resources while it did it.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7OK then, putting all the bashing aside. What are the alternatives? Are there any?... Is Zonealarm the "Norton Antivirus" of firewalls?
- jrmorris77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7News flash: Digg community has officially exhausted the news sources on the web and is now resorting to digging inaccurate posts about ancient system monitoring techniques. What next? Apple releases the iLisa?
Buried for antiquity and inaccuracy. - polymorphist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6sysinternals is full of goodies!
- footodors, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11then what do you do with this long list and I only waited 1 minute
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well my router can't stop connections that my computer initiated - such as a trojan will make. Please buy me one instead of digging down a perfectly rational comment!
- noumuon, on 10/27/2007, -0/+5lol, no, norton security suite is the norton antivirus of firewalls, norton antivirus included.
- calbff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Run it with administrator privileges
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Or just check your outgoing router log.
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'm not sure why I'd want a pretty app with fisher price buttons just to output a log file. Call me crazy, but if I find my computer is running slowly, I generally don't try to fix it by installing more pretty programs...leastwise not when I can do the job with a single command already.
- sublime, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6If the person reading the netstat dump does not have a thorough understanding of TCP fundamentals, they will not be able to interpret the netstat dump. If they do have an understanding of TCP fundamentals, then they probably already know and use the command.
- Drizzit, on 10/27/2007, -1/+6You should, I did that with Geektool and a few weeks later the system was thrashing the disk. Geektool has a memory leak so bad you can watch it tick up. It had consumed 6 gigs of which 5 were ram. I had to quit using it altogether.
- digital81, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4I didn't dig down your comment. To be honest, I rarely even press the thumbs up or down buttons on anything I comment on. I am sorry if you thought I did. I was simply stating there are hardware solutions that work, and they are relatively not expensive for the person that already owns a computer and pays for high speed internet. Not every reply people make on this site are meant to be negative towards the original commenter. Though with the mentality of a lot of users on this site, I can see why you would think that.
- ch33sehead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well if you defrag that porn, it'll run much faster.
- frisbeeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm assuming you're running Vista. If that is the case right click on the command prompt icon in the start menu and select run as administrator. Should work for you
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nice. Very useful on a "quiet" system to see what connections are still persisting.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah, because 1% of the world's computers don't merit having viruses or spyware written for them.
- brownb2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Easy - remember the "guru meditation" error messages on Amiga computers of the 80/90s to do with meditating like a monk? Well this is the same - it means it's broke, and you must levitate (elevate) like a monk.
duh! - noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4if people get confused about the info from netstat, their brains will implode from the info hijackthis provides.
- SuperSneaks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It means you are running Windows Vista.
- noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Users connect to the "web" while the system connects to the "internet"" ...? what? because you seem confused: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet#Terminology: ...
- napsack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Run as administrator.
- crazybugger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Don't connect to the internet. As simple as that!
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Windows XP Home is a castrated operating system and should not be used.
- MrPig, on 10/27/2007, -0/+3I personally like http://www.iarsn.com/taskinfo.html it will list exactly what ports each application is using so you can pin-point the problem/virus. It'll also tell you connection attempts that may have failed.
- KEMIC1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i use hijackthis to find all my running processes and to find what applications are open that shouldnt be and lets me delete the registry keys manually. you can find it at download.com here:
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-103 ...
their editors gave it 5 stars and this is what they have to say:
If persistent spyware is bogging down your computer, you might need HijackThis. The tiny program examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system, such as browser helper objects and certain types of Registry keys. Pressing the Scan button generates a log of dozens of items, most of which are just customizations. Don't check off an item and hit the Fix checked button unless you're sure it's malware. Clicking Info on selected item tells you why the entry was flagged as suspicious, but not whether it's actually malware. To find that out, search the Web for that item's name or go straight to a forum, such as SpywareInfo or Computer Cops. Saving the log creates a text document you can post to these forums.
The latest version adds powerful tools to the Config window. The process manager and hosts file editor help you excise virulent infections. The unique ADS Spy tool scans for alternate data streams, which some browser hijackers use to hide from spyware removers. The program still installs into whatever directory in which you unzip the file, which can make it hard to locate. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution. - Qwertie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Doesn't work for me on Windows 2000. It seems there is no "-b" option to netstat. However, I do get some feedback if I use it without any command-line arguments. The only trouble: it doesn't say what process or program is accessing the internet, so it certainly is not as helpful as it should be.
- Namco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Run it with admin rights
- noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3lol @ msmsgs
- unitedstatians, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2First to use 'netstat' in Mac OSX. What you'll need to do is open up the terminal tool and type: lsof -i
- bobzibub, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The best answer so far. You have my digg.
