Like what? Breaking web standards that they helped to write?
Being slow as hell?
Making windows even more vulnerable?
Help me out here... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Remind me not to visit digg between the 23rd and 27th. Nickelodeon will offer a wider range of news on those days.
- quisxt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25huh???
from the article:
According to Mozilla Vice President of Products Christopher Beard, Firefox 2.0, which should be available on Tuesday if all goes according to schedule, includes key new usability features missing in the new IE 7. - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Mozilla has been working on Firefox 2 for a long time before now and has had three release candidates. I'm not sure why you think it's too soon for a final release. Please elaborate.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Why? I've been using the beta for the past month and I'm pleased with it..
- pritch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23@i440 - I wouldn't be so sure about that. I'm using RC3 right now, and it seems to be far better behaved than 1.5 was in terms of how much memory it uses.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Well I am using the release candidate right now it is rock solid.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Too soon? Do you know how long they've been working on this?
And I'm using build 20061020 right now, and it doesn't seem buggy to me. Where are these bugs you're referring to? - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I read your message 5 times and still don't understand what you're on about. Buried.
- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Firefox 2.0 on 24th. Ubuntu 6.10 on 26th. Perfect.
- ditoa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13go to about:config in the filter type tabs, look for browser.tabs.closeButtons, change it to 3 and click ok. The close button will now be located in the same place as 1.5 (far right on the tab bar).
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I've been using Bon Echo nightlies for ages and it's become more and more stable and the memory usage is very low on the new builds. It's a great 2.0 release.
- Jamezes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12And Vista on the 25th. Things are going to get interesting. =)
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Sluggish? I use Firefox precisely for its faster speed, even though it is less stable and is prone to memory leaks. I just restart the browser every now and then and I'm fine. (Edit: I'm on a PPC Mac)
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9“And Vista on the 25th. Things are going to get interesting. =)”
It's actually January 2007. - fabiopsousa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5well at the moment i am happy 1.5.07... and hey i usually load tons of tabs!
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Don't you guys want Ice Weasal? It'll be what all the cool cats will be using. ;)
- faun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5you'll still have to be doing that...
It'll take years to phase out IE6 (just as we're still phasing out 5) let along IE7 and any rendering bugs it will bring to the table. In other words, sorry; get used to writing simpler code and using browser-hacks for anything more inventive. - quisxt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed, I've been using the rcs and betas (and I think some of the alphas) on my ppc mac for months now. I can't remember the last time the browser crashed on me. Also, the browser doesn't become sluggish anymore after several hours/day of use.
oh, and this theme makes FF a little prettier on a mac (at least to me) :)
http://kmgerich.com/2006/09/27/pinstripe-for-firefox-now-with-20-more-macintosh/ - ironylives, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ditoa is correct. Tho' its not been properly promoted, FF2.0RC3 offers four, different 'Close Tab' scenarios. See related.:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons - mvent2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@i440
I'd be even less sure about that for trunk users. 6 tabs = 43MB baby! :D
i440, you can't hold this memory grudge forever. Software improves. Most of these leaks are fixed in 2.0, and further fixes on trunk. - garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i440, I think he was talking about the business version, although that's still not until atleast the first week of November.
- shinigami2057, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Archer:
Supporting more standards isn't enough, considering they didn't support many standards to begin with. If you want to actually support standards, you have to support a hell of a lot more than even IE7 does now, considering that EVERY other major browser (Safari, Firefox, Opera, Konqueror) has about 10x the standards support.
If you want evidence, just check out my page under IE and under every other damn browser to see what I mean: http://lights2dx.net/testing - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No way Firefox is faster than Camino or Safari. On neither my PPC mini or my MacBook does Firefox load faster or render pages faster than Camino or Safari. Not 1.5, not the 2.0 RCs.
Maybe it's because I use FF for developing and have a dozen extensions installed, who knows. If you use FF without extensions, well you may as well go for Camino in that case then. - toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm so glad it will finally be coming out. My boss won't let me install beta software (he's paranoid) and I'm getting so tired of 1.5.
- tofuComputer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yay! Browser Wars! Someone hand me the popcorn!
"You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss your buried Digg comment good-bye!" - mbeckfl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where the H is my FF2? It's time to shut down for the day and the promised release is no where in sight? If your'e gonna tout a 10/24 release, put it up at midnight or by 6AM....
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The funny thing about IE7 is that although they do 'support' more 'web standards', they broke some of the ones that IE6 handled correctly.
- littlegiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh boy... here we go again... Another delightful round of bumping extensions to make them compatible with the latest version.. Sheesh...
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well I have to say, for the past 2 weeks I've been using Firefox 2 (the regular RC3 builds and the PPC optimized builds) on my power book g4 and they have been pretty stable soo far. Everything works great except one little annoyance, when loading Google as the homepage, the main logo is set off screen until I refresh the page. As well, the close tab buttons and refresh button disappear until I mouse over them. But other than that, it's a great browser.
- nightowl512, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The about:config solution will work, but firefox should have foreseen this issue and made an option to choose which one of the close tab options the user wanted in the main options window where regular users that have never heard of about:config could set it up however they wanted.
- adleym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"by default, the browser will give the user an option to restore his or her browser sessions if there is an unexpected shutdown"
That and all those cool extensions...if firefox was a woman I'd have sex with it - jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1innacurate article description. Mozilla's release does not and has never had anything to do with Microsoft's release "schedule". If anything, it's the other way around.
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I give you yourself.
- zmower, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Well I won't be upgrading to 2.0. I've tried RC3 and I didn't like the close icon on the tab as opposed to the side. It just means more mouse movement when I close the n tabs that make up my homepage. So I've reved back to 1.5.
- crbaker, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2I have to agree, I've being using FF2 for about a month now and still don't like the new tab close implementation. Would be nice if they made this configurable.
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2@ReinMasamuri
Which web browser are you talking about? I have been running all the IE Betas, RC's and now the final release, and i haven't had a single problem. I find it must faster then firefox, except for some table renderings on larger pages, Breaking web standards? Last i checked they are conforming to a lot more web standards with IE 7. And making windows even more Vulnerable? do you have security reports to prove this? Last reports i read showed that IE 7 was infact more secure then IE6, maybe not as secure as FF, but i'm sure once FF gets popular enough they'll start exploiting it just as much as IE.
This is the annoying part about Digg, users like you, I would be perfectly happy reading your comment and agreeing with you, if you actually had reports to back you up. - thefinger, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1um..... yawn????
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Since when has it been about choice? How many people ask* if you want to use Firefox?
* Ask and accepting either yes or no for an answer, as opposed to asking and demanding yes. - wotcher, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2Specify.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Well if it's fast for you then I guess it's fast for everyone. Or perhaps you're just slow and Firefox seems fast?
Camino's sexy. - Hurricane, on 10/12/2007, -24/+8Too soon, they are gonna have a buggy release just to compete against IE7.
Since when has Firefox been about competition, it is suppose to be about choice of a better product.
Seems like Mozilla Foundation is starting to think a little bit too much like Micro$oft. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+9Firefox is missing key features IE7 offers, Opera's missing features provided by some Firefox extensions, and IE7 is sorely missing the finesse of Opera's layout.
It's an endless circle. - greatcaffeine, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2Firefox doesn't really matter until version 3 comes out... Until then, I'll be sticking to Safari and Camino, because sluggish apps aren't cool.
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -30/+3You all best cover your ears on that day.
The sound of memory banks bursting can be quite loud. - Mindenigma, on 10/12/2007, -32/+1It' encouraging to see that when you currently try to correct CSS bugs in IE 7 with CSS hacks :)
What is Digg?
