Yeah, it's the real pedestrians you have to look out for. - shitsite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It's cool. Although I think we've been spoiled by the likes of NFS et al - 140mph through Paris doesn't feel as fast as it should. It sounds good though!
- andy2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14To quote:
"Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago." - timmins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13people who read the Wikipedia entry for this film will realize this is true. most agree the car never went over 85 mph. some even argue it was in his Mercedes and then later dubbed.
it was also filmed in dawn of August when most people aren't on the roads to begin with, in a month when Parisians are on holiday.
the Stokholm series of cars racing through cities is much better - Bronevaya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"According to recent claims by Claude Lelouch, he was driving his own Mercedes in the film, and later dubbed over the sound of a Ferrari 275GTB to give the impression of much higher speeds. Calculations made by several independent groups using the film show that the car never exceeds 140 km/h (85 mph), which seems to lend credence to his recent comments."

If you do some research on the film, you discover that the maximum speed stated is in KILOMETERS per hour - 140 KPH = 80 MPH. Also, the car is a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL, with the sounds of the Ferrarri engine dubbed in (to make it sound more 'powerful')
This page has information (in French), along with a behind-the-scenes photograph showing the camera attached to the vehicle: http://www.axe-net.be/rdv/presentation.php - Nikon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I like how he seems to speed up through red lights, as if it will make it safer..
- 5c4r74c3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9 i like seeing the landmarks as the car drives around
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Reminds me of the awesome Getaway in Stockholm series. If you enjoy this video you should definetly check this site out: http://www.getawayinstockholm.com/
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you at least looked at Wikipedia you would've seen links to interviews with Lelouche where he says he was the driver, and the Ferrari sound was dubbed over. There's even an image of the rig on his Mercedess 450SEL 6.9L.
Wikipedia _is_ a good source if information, whether you like it or not, and now you look like the idiot. - Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11And you'd know from all that 140mph driving you do around the centre of Paris?
- caluml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Search on P2P for the Prince Noir, who rides a motorbike round the Peripherique (the orbital road in Paris) at very high speeds.
- ThomasCJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And:
"The route taken in the film is 10.42 km long (6.48 mi). It takes the driver 7:57 to cover that distance, giving him an average speed of 78.64 km/h (48.86 mph)." - osuchasenuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Before you guys cry about the video being lame, why don't you take your mercedes and drive the streets in your hometown. I would be more than willing to watch. But put the camera inside the car near the back so when you run in to a car going 120+ the footage can survive and be digged :)
- csprech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Real Life "Project Gotham Racing"! Kudos! :)
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Must've been expensive camera equipment for that day... i'm a wee bit suprised he didn't encounter a cop on that trip...
- aquataine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some trivia from the IMDB about the film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169173/trivia
- timmins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5it was August in France
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%27%C3%A9tait_un_rendez-vous - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just because it was 10 years before you were born doesn't mean that professional filmmakers didn't have any access to real film equipment.
- XxUNDEROATHxX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Thats pretty good video and sound for being 1978....
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5 Exciting film, crazy, dangerous (debris on street cuts a tire, oil, other crap) but still interesting.
But! I usually don't listen to paranoid rants on digg, but there is one point in the film that made me question its realism. At one point where there is a garbage truck on the right (you see the side of it not the back like the other garbage truck) and a car passing it on the left. You can hear him downshifting to about 2nd gear, by the engine noise, but then it seems as if he's suddenly in top gear and cruising along at high speed. There was no increase in engine noise, he was at 2nd and then suddenly humming along at a steady rpm.
That the only part I found really odd, well other than the not crashing due to debris on the roads like I mentioned above.
It reminds me of "Gone In 60 Seconds" and no not the piece of crap Nicolas Cage was in, the original made in the early 1970's. I wonder if it was influenced by that film.
The best part was the audio! Can you download this somewhere? - caluml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5kokobaroko - have you seen the Hayabusa Turbo vids?
Wheelies from 60 to 140 mph, and then accelerates away until 240+. Scary stuff. Even more scary that I like it. :) - Mipmap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Fun, but it's an exaggeration.
Various groups measured distance/time between various landmarks and found the car never exceeded 145 km/h (85 mph). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%27%C3%A9tait_un_rendez-vous)
The guy who made the film admitted he drove a Mercedes and overdubbed a Ferrari sound (those tires screeching are a dead giveaway). - dalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Getaway in Stockholm movies was mentioned above, so i thought i tip you off with the "Ghostrider" movies (also Swedish) if you enjoy this kind of stuff. Here's a preview from the latest (i think) Ghostrider movie. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-781163969053975339&q=ghostrider&pl=true
I can't say i really that i believe the "story" behind the clip but it's nice anyways. - kokobaroko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That was the first thing that came to my mind after watching this vid :)
I got a few vids with bikes running arround Paris in RUSH HOUR! There was presumably some contest to do it in the shortest time, crazy stuff. - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://digg.com/search?search=Ferrari+Paris&area=all&type=both&age=60&search-buried=on
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 I think it says it's real an not cut or edited, something like that.
- Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I have to say this seems fake... Listen to the tire screeches, it sounds like they had two samples that were used over and over again. And the screeches last way too long after the turn is complete.
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Brilliant... just like Midtown Madness....
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't think I've ever seen pigeons move so fast...
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Faster speed = less hang time in the intersection, so it makes sense to speed up when approaching a red light.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have just soiled myself.
Great display of balls, skill and crash avoidance. Who was driving? Larry from Ronin? - Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Better Quality http://homepage.mac.com/jacrav/rendezvous20_04.mov
- applejackson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was awesome
- djspike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow this is pretty cool.
- dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Holy crap that's awesome! Reminds me of Project Gotham Racing. I can't believe the streets weren't even closed.. there were some close calls in this video! Amazing driving.
- tenchi71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow... that has got to be the most irresponsible film making I have seen in a long time... and I loved every second of it.
- Link459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I've never seen the streets of Paris so empty. :/ Especially around the Arc de Triomphe.
- sole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he he. I liked how he went through all of those pigeons.
- phillprice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Route map http://www.axe-net.be/rdv/map.php
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of the best high speed first-person-perspective stuff can be found from the Isle of Man TT races. They mount cameras on motorcycles and speed through the island, which has no speed limit.
http://BSAlert.com/ - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I knew it was fake when he was on a long straightway and he was barely overtaking another car on the right (maybe 10-15 mph), despite the mighty revs of the "Ferrari" engine. Unless, of course, he had it stuck in 2nd gear most of the way, which is what it sounds like.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pic of Ferrari 275 GTB
http://www.dennigcars.org/models/ferrari_275_GTB.htm - modian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The engine noise was overdubbed. Check the wiki and imdb links that others have posted.
- notfred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Buy it. Is it that hard to pay for things?
http://www.rendezvousdvd.com/ - 0x4B494C4C, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Love the speeding up at red lights too - thinking about it I imagine you're safer going through them quicker though = less time spent in the way of traffic. If you hit anything, you're twice as ***** but I imagine it reduces the risk of contact slightly
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know Paris well enough to plot his route on a map? An animated map view to accompany the video would be fun...
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2paris looks beautiful
