nice self promotion. - Kwinti, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Google apps and Office don't have to be used as opposites where you choose one or the other. I enjoy using a combination of both to offer me the portability of Google Apps and the options of the full Office suite
- azAZ09, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6"web 2.0 is all about open-ness and collaboration"
Er, no --web 2.0 is all about the mispillt pagenam. Back in the good 'ol days of web no-point-0 -- if I 'member it correctly-- we used to call this sort of community thing "Usenet" I think... or maybe it was "Circle-Jerk"...or maybe both together --yeah that's the ticket.
Heh! how 'bout "Klustr-phuck" thats a great web 2.0 site name ...(/bitter 'ol man sarcasm)
Really isn't this web 2.0 false distinction meme so 2005. Haven't we moved on? - DangerCollie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The fact there's even a debate between Google Apps and Office is significant even in itself. We outsource things all the time in our life. Food production to corporate farms that produce food in amazing varieties and quantities. Electricity...most of us anyway. Water, sewer...again, most of us. We even outsource meal production to a large extent.
If it's cheaper to outsource to Google instead of maintaining the same services, it's going to happen. Count on it. At $50/seat, the debate is already over. All business is arguing about is the timing.
We trust other businesses, government and quasi-government organizations to provide us services all the time. We tend to forget about the ones we grew up with. This is no different, it's just new. Once the newness wears off and those apps work offline, we'll accept it as easily as we accept letting the electric company supply electricity for us. - Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There's a google aps vs office debate raging? Wouldn't that be like debating ms paint vs photoshop?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Web 2.0 is just corporations taking over the internet.
"IT'S A TRAP".
lol - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Dude, it's no Web 2.0 unless I've got my drop shadows and aqua effects.
- JeffS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Wouldn't Microsoft Sharepoint and Oracle Collaboration Suite kind of fall in the Web 2.0 tools category? I think there are a lot of companies using Web 2.0 tools in the enterprise. Just because they block Facebook doesn't mean they fear Web 2.0.
- saturnx8, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2web 2.0 is nothing more than a marketing ploy. I am so sick of hearing web 2.0. SPINDOCTORISM

- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Is Joomla Web 2.0?
- thefinger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Imo, this thing they keep calling "Web 2.0". I doubt it's primarily tech driven. More like numbers-driven. Get enough people moving their lives online and the tech gets pushed along. A critical mass of some sort.
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3There's no debate anywhere significant about google apps vs office. The only place this comes up is online places like digg and smaller businesses where their tech guy is a google whore. As it stands now google apps is nowhere near the same level even for just the average user, nor would practically any company allow their docs to be stored online on somebody else's server where employees can't get access without being online. Then there's the compatability problems and limitations of javascript in a web browser.
The only chance that real desktop applications like Office will be replaced by online counterparts would be through technologies such as Silverlight or Flash (or more likely their sucessors or possibly seperate branch with the same idea that gets it out of the browser). - azAZ09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Here. I'll turn off my spell checker and come up with a few more.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1doc host for when you need to display documents
collaboration suite because sometimes you need more then one person working on a document
document viewer for when a computer doesn't have office/the ibm suite - connieLingus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1why do we worry about M$ Office and Google Apps when OpenOffice 2.3 is free and kicks some serious open source ass? Apps may be great but it requires an ISP to run, and ISPs are nothing but corporate gatekeepers who will hold our data hostage the first moment they can.
- Thegnofbreland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This problem of control will does not look like it is going to be solved anytime soon, and Web 3.0 is right around the corner. Hopefully, there will be some solution so this debate does not drag on for the next 20 years.
- IamZed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You mean a Beowulf Klustr-phuck, don't you?
- connieLingus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1hey thanks for giving me my new band name....
- Ryosen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually, this month's Fortune Small Business magazine (print) has a main article on Google apps vs MS Office. So, yeah, there is a debate.
- gsa5383, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0At the end of the day, companies reserve the right to do what ever they want to their employees internet privledges. I go to a military instituion and we are blocked from sites like myspace, youtube and many others. while this treatment sucks, it is their right as the person footing the bill. the same is true with other businesses. If they are paying for the bandwith, they reserve the right to prohibit employees from using/visiting sites they deem inappropriate or hazardous to the company.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I can't find a single use for Google apps. I can't think of a time when I don't have access to a computer capable of running a desktop office suite, or when I am not able to take my documents with me.
Someone explain to me what the point of Google apps is, other than a "free" office suite which isn't as good as the equally free Open Office. - BigGourgues, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah. Embrace the change. If you're worried about Google, just keep to your 'stick it to the man' open source. I'm going to use whatever is easiest and whatever works best (or whatever works most) with other apps. If you're worried about Google taking over tesktop apps aswell, buy some stock and enjoy the ride... web 2.0 is allowing us to share so much more, revolutionizing the way we interact with eachother, share ideas, and do business.

http://blogs.ebay.com/gnabeel - Vinfotech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Web 2.0 is simply about evolution of online businesses. As the Web 2.0 grows, the more web evolves further benefiting end users.
Digg has taken a cut to traditional publishing, with users proving pretty good at finding stories that satisfy their own demographic - and its popularity is a testament to that. - aboazazi, on 12/31/2007, -0/+0Web 1.0 = synchronous

- Vinfotech, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0As per me Web 2.0 is a package of both threats and opportunities, the time to take your head out of the sand is now and realize if we can make use of it or let it fade away....
Do check for more...
http://www.bhopu.com/2007/09/15/Web-2.0-is-here-to-stay - CommodoreZBT, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0I think there is a prevalence of fear going around. Since the government uses it and everyone is terrified of spying. Theres an interesting article about that at http://www.asktheadmin.com/2007/07/be-afraid-be-very-afraid-fbi-are-now.html . Really sheds alot of light on the subject.

What is Digg?
