- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem with many of the human-devised ciphers are that they could well be faked. The motive being to sell books purporting to hold "secret codes to untold wealth". Ha there's even one - the Chaocipher which is obviously fake. The true "secret" to deciphering the code is known only by his son and wait for it ... his publisher (who no doubt 'aint telling as long as people want to know and buy the book!!)
Oak Island is the exception, as it's proven there's something down there, but no-one can get it. But of course the cipher on the stone tablet is completely incidental - it's not needed to get to the treasure. - Winker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Scientific American has an article on the Voynich manuscript at:

For some reason people believe that just because it is old it must be infallible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damned interesting stuff.
- inveterate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How much fun are these!

here's her page on the Kryptos, the unsolved code sculpture at CIA headquarters - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Here comes the "Lost" references...
I thought the numbers in Lost are simply LAT/LON map coordinates and there was no "code" to it. - thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old, and a 3rd dupe. Cool though.

Ok... the other is so old that the link died. Just do a search for "Famous Unsolved Codes and Ciphers" - IsraelTorres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another Unsolved Code or Cipher that came up 21 days ago is dubbed "The Rayburn Files" and can be found originally posted here: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/01/handwritten_rea.html with a breakdown and summary of all the facts posted here: http://www.israeltorres.org/The_Rayburn_Files.php to further help understand whether or not this may be a code, a list of passwords, mnemonic device, psychotic gibberish, or secret message otherwise. There have been a lot of guesses and approaches tried all without success. Check it out; you may see something that many others have yet to do.
"As of now it has been 21 days since this blog entry was published and no viable solutions have been found, or proposed. All we have come up with are thoughts about what it could be without any factual assurance whatsoever. It could be a lot of things, but in reality it is only one thing that it was used for if anything at all. Whatever it is we still don’t know."

http://www.israeltorres.org/The_Rayburn_Files.php - jump4jay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice digg and quite interesting... but these are well known to who, exactly? I consider myself "in the know" of many a things, but the only one I've heard of here is the RSA Challenges. Like they say, we learn something new evryday! :)
- CyberSmackdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here comes the "Lost" references...
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The still unsolved messages supposedly give exact directions, and a list of who the treasure belongs to."
Hmmm.we have no idea what it says but we know what it says? Come on. - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oak Island is not solved. I live not too far from there and the mystery is not solved.
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Other ones though are very intriguing!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Cool. Maybe some inspiration for a new Dan Brown book ;)"
Try reading "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson. The plot actually involves the unsolved Enigma-type cyphers from WWII that are listed on that page. - godkar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cracked one of those Enigma messages that wasn't decrypted. It said "all your base are belong to us!"
- M4v3rIC, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0They aren't famous. They aren't famous at all. They are a complete waste of my time. Like Kelly Clarkson and Ashley Simpson.
P.S. It's an unofficial list, simply because nobody cares.
