- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Inaccurate. The original article never said Target was. It said Target was going to have BluRay endcaps and would be selling Sony standalone BluRay players. They previously sold no standalone HD-DVD or BluRay players.
The original article was accurate. Just a bunch of people starting misquoting it.
Not a false alarm. Just dumbasses, and you can't do much about those. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+29Another Endgadget ***** up? Nothing new.
Endgadget when will you learn to stop trying to be a real news source?
Stick to what you know and copy and paste a reliable source.
Original Endgadget ***** up >>>>>>>>>>>>>>http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/26/target-to-only-sell-blu-ray-players-in-stores/ - FriendsOfWario, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18They still will be only carrying stand alone blu-ray player, no stand alone HD-DVD player... whats target going to do with the stock of current HD-DVD's ? Of course sell them..
- goldentofu, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17Hmm, misinformation from Engadget yet again. I bet hedge funds have figured how to use Engadget for stock manipulation. I hope no one at Engadget own's stock, or else they getting a visit from the SEC.
- RAT-Man, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10If you're not making much money from one of the two formats, why sell it?
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11That explains why I still saw HD-DVDs for sale at target today. I was going to buy 300 on HD-DVD from them with a gift card I just got but I figured they wouldn't be ordering them. But low and behold their HD-DVD display was still setup right next to the blu-ray and amazingly enough the HD-DVDs had less in stock than the blu-ray.
- michaelb1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Has anybody else noticed that most news stories about the format war tend to be false?
ref: porn industry decides to use HD DVD - Philodox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11You know that stock levels aren't an indicator of sales performance, right?
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -1/+61) it confuses people 2) we don't want/need 2 formats so one has to come out on top.
- psevium, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Heh, wasn't Engadget the one who smashed Apple's market cap or something over a rumor
- damndj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It's not a mistake that's the problem. It's the constant stream of mistakes they have made in the past few months. They've lost ALL credibility to me and I don't even visit their site any more.
- skealoha86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3thank you for clearing that up...
- skealoha86, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4text from the engadget link you posted........"Everyone's favorite wasteful format war took another strange twist today, with the AP reporting that Target will only stock Blu-ray players in its retail stores -- specifically, Sony's $499 BDP-S300. The decision, which Target and Sony are due to announce tomorrow, doesn't include Target's website, Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, or HD DVD movies, so it's not a particularly huge win for Blu-ray, with even Target saying things like "We are not proclaiming one format vs. the other as the preferred consumer technology." Still, coupled with Blockbuster's decision to only stock Blu-ray discs, it looks like the format war might be fought and won at the retailer level, not by consumers."....................what part of that article is inaccurate?????
- oylers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The same could be said for all movies on a physical medium. Who buys them on disc these days? You can get them illegally (via torrent sites) and legally through services like Amazon's, via Apple's iTunes store and via Xbox Live Marketplace. IPTV is making its way into markets as well so ... why invest in any physical medium? Doesn't seem too smart to me.
- FatBird19, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's a waste of resources and customer's money to deal with two formats, especially when one is superior to the other one anyways. What's the point?
- ibeetle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Interesting you should say that about physical media. A few weeks ago the movie industry announced for the first time sense DVD's were first released last fiscal quarter saw a drop in DVD sales; Yet DVD rentals were at all time highs.
- TheRealPod, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6I'll be enjoy my first season of Heroes in a couple weeks... What will you be doing HD-DVD haters?
- FatBird19, on 10/10/2007, -7/+9I wish people would just adopt BluRay and be done with it. It holds more data for more content, a higher transfer rate for better quality video, java enabled for advanced navigation and disk presentation, and it can do picture-in-picture just like HD DVD. Greater adoption of BluRay would have to drive the player prices down, as it did with DVD, and eventually the hddvd loyal studios would have no choice but to adopt the format.
The big studios and more small ones are adopting BluRay anyways: it's a drawn out and losing battle! Make HD easy on the customers already! - hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You just described 95% of the forum posting internet. . .
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6I buy movies for movies, not for "bonus content" like a space invaders game.
And for movies, with both formats supporting the same codecs and audio standards the hard truth is that Blu-Ray is able to devote 50GB for a transfer, while HD-DVD can only hold 30GB - 20GB gives you a LOT of headroom for better bitrates in transfers, which means better video quality for things the length of movies (for TV show transfers you can simply use more discs). - skealoha86, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2they both have DRM...?
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3well no duh buddy but it doesn't change what I saw.
- FatBird19, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Who buys porn on disk anymore?
It's far more forward thinking for distributors to find a way to market porn on the internet. The draw to the "fakeness" of the studio porn movies is on the decline as people want to see more realistic and less staged interaction. Rather than long movies with stories customers have grown more accustomed to shorter videos online.
Porn on HD DVD is not a BluRay killer in any way. - Kolorin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Not watching a ***** tv show thats for sure.
- snoopdogg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I just saw HD DVD's in the sunday target ad anyway
- iplayyouandme, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5Go Blu-Ray!
- jhuebel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Why were people digging Philodox down? He's right.
- Skitals, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6HD DVD is going nowhere. Anyone who has tried both formats prefers HD DVD. I have a Blu-ray and HD DVD player, and HD DVD gets far more use. Movies in both formats always have better content on HD DVD (look at the special features on HD DVD vs Blu-ray for 300, for example). Sony jumped the gun and rushed Blu-ray out the door before the finalized the spec, so BD-J and other features are lacking.
- headband, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Because they can make more when sony pays them to go exclusive
- da5id, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Apple fanatics.
- TheRealPod, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Or it means the movie makers can get lazy and use older compression formats to take up the excess space.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4How is Target only selling dedicated Blu-Ray players not a form of exclusivity? Sure they still sell HD-DVD media in stores, but who is going to buy them when the only player in sight is a Sony Blu-Ray player, or you have to buy a 360 AND an external drive just to play movies? What consumer is going to realistically make that choice?
- fumanju, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4This format war is far from over - It really is in the early stages. Java for navigation isn't necessarily a good thing (look at the delays people have on the Pirates discs when loading different menus). I think HDi in HD DVD is way better than BD-J, but time will tell there. I would like to see you go out today and purchase a Blu-Ray player with any BD Discs that have PiP - you can't. Don't give me any of this "it's coming this fall", that's about as relevant now as HD DVD fans saying 51GB discs and 1.5x read speeds are coming. Would should truly happen is all studios should go neutral and let the consumers' $$ decide who the winner is.
- kiddsickuras, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4So in other words lets also adopt insane prices and DRM
- themastersb, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1HDDVD shouldn't submit to the ***** who messed everything up like this.
- cvprosperoust, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3I work at Target in electronics, and I've heard nothing about this, and I quizzed our executives about it and they had heard nothing either.
I'll believe it when I see the memo. - conkers209, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1The only store that will matter on this whole format war is Wal-Mart. This Christmas is when they are going to promote the hell out of HD-DVD and start selling HD-DVD players for under $300. Why is Wal-Mart the only place that matters? Because 99.99% of people shops at Wal-Mart. So if you are thinking of what player to go, you may want to wait and see how this player Wal-Mart will start selling.
- verstohlen, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Of course they're not giving up HD-DVD. Who would be gullible enough to believe otherwise?
- wilf_brim, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Um, go back and read the Digg comments. We noted this when the story broke. With the HD-A2 going for about $250, it is the price leader in stand alone next gen optical players. HD-DVD and BluRay discs are still commanding a 10 buck premium at retail, so Target would be nuts to blow off the HD DVD market right now
- Skitals, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3You give the impression that blu-ray releases have better picture quality, more features due to capacity, and better navigation. Unfortunately, none of these things are true. With the exception of video quality, which is a dead tie with HD DVD (due to identical transfers/encodes), HD DVD has the upper hand in all these areas.
- masfenix, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Yea target was gonna lose a lot of money. But I dont think HDDDVD can win this battle. I've done a lot of research, and as soon as blu ray players come down in price a bit, its gonna take over the world
http://www.fakebets.net - Tjalve, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2I don't see why chains pick their format, why not sell both and make more money?
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Holy crap, they made a mistake! CALL EVERYONE AND LET THEM KNOW THE EVIL THAT IS ENGADGET..
/sarcasm - HyperJack, on 10/10/2007, -12/+5And this matters why?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+3***** BUMS
