- GWoods, on 10/12/2007, -3/+79direct link to generator: http://dev.allredtech.com/fakename/
- joelhardi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47Actually the blog page is the author's own ... as he says in the first line, "My fake name generator is somewhat up and running." His last name is Allred and the domain of the generator is allredtech.com.
So not blog spam, although I thought it was for a sec too. - Universal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Awesome idea; it should be integrated into BugMeNot.com
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Jesus Christ is a name, or a proper noun if you want to nitpick, therefore it should be capitalized.
- taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18GREAT!!! all that junk mail can get lost in the mail then!
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17You needed a fake identity generator for that? I just use "123 Fake St."
- atomicpoet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This is a great idea. I hate giving out personal information to nameless internet companies. Luckily, this has made my life easier.
- xlii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Nice! Now I want Firefox plugin which will autofill forms with this autogenerated data, and will be integrated with some kind of spammail (like http://www.mytrashmail.com for example)..
And then - bye bye bastards, who want me to register just so I can read article or two! ;) - lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It would suck to refresh and to see your name, address, birth date and mother's maiden name.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"You needed a fake identity generator for that? I just use "123 Fake St.""
Some places that sign up make sure that the fake street you entered exists in the town you say you live in, and that Town matches the Fake Zip code you entered and that Town is in the country you say you are in.
So if you enter
123 Fake St. OMGLAWLZ, New York. 72234, Colombia. That wont work. unless if there is a 123 Fake St. in a city called OMGLAWLZ in a state called New York with the Zipcode as 72234 in Colombia, the form wont accept it and will ask you to re-fill the forms. You cant even fake Phone numbers sometimes.
This makes matching information so it will work. Fel sorry if the guy I fake as gets Spam in mailbox in RL - zudd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9now all we need is a "fill in fake info" button for firefox to pull bogus info from this into web forms...
/me starts working on one - kejistan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Don't trust Google maps to tell you whether an address exists or not. As great as Google is, apparently the address of my house doesn't exist either....
- Terrx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Dwain Wong
113 Elm Street
Oh noes, not Elm Street!!!!! - atomicpoet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@ross
It's not the fake name that is hard for me to create, it's all the personal details. Who wants to investigate whether the zip code lines up with the address or not? - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Awesome! But... Isn't this illegal or something?
Oh well, can't be worse than RIAA or MPAA... :P - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Even if it is illegal. The court case will be dismissed for its absurdness
United Coalition of Spammers vs. FoolFromHell.
Summary: The UCS as charged FoolFromHell of providing false information to the Spamming Society. This has inhibited the ability of the UCS to send spam mail to the right address, resulting in thousands of mail meant for FoolFromHell, and was sent to 447 Sunset Drive, Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085. - doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I checked...your address actually used to be a legitimate address in 1964: "In 1962, Mr. Bill Merodias rented an old building at 164 S. Main Street for boxing. With the help of the Lions Club and the Catalina Optimist Club, the Old Pueblo Boys Club became incorporated on February 8, 1963"
All of the addresses I've made, I've checked, and they all work (google maps finds them somewhere). So looks like this site is getting real addresses, although they might be old.
In fact, even the area code checks out...man this guy is thorough - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow. Just put this up a day or two ago. Didn't expect anyone to find it.
First, addresses aren't validated other than city/state/zip/areacode/prefix. Haven't figured out how to do that yet. Suggestions welcome.
Second, lots of uses for this. A lot easier to generate real sounding names/addresses when signing up for an offer multiple times using this than making it up yourself.
@flew: I thought about middle initial. Guess I'll add that in. - leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This would be great to use against those Nigerian Scammers.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Heh, what rock have you been living under?
Court cases are far too rarely dismissed, or even lost, for being absurd.
All they'd claim was "this web site supports generating false identities, possibly usable for terrorist activities" without going into spam and all that, and it could end up being hard to defend, especially in the US. - jr0515, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow, check out the name I got. I am dead serious, I didn't change this:
Jesus Kruis
948 Highland Drive
Birmingham, AL 35222
Phone: 205-385-6934
Mother's maiden name: Kotur
Birthday: June 8, 1950 - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Finding zipcodes is easy, making up names is easy, it's not really a False ID unless it comes with a Drivers license and Social Security number. THEN you can "become" another person. Seriously don't know why you would need a generator for this stuff.
- kingpomba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nice idea, i wonder how he coded in the adresses he would of had to find a range for each street.
i am:
Lincoln Hubach
164 Main Street
Tucson, AZ 85716
Phone: 520-322-2206
Mother's maiden name: Garter
Birthday: June 19, 1954 :P - Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Next time I see a blogspam link I will submit the same article directly."
Well, that'll be productive. Go ahead and try this so people can complain about the dupes. - mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Let me know when it's done
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought you'd be older.
- insomniacdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Now THAT'S an extension worth having.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5A lot of unfortunate guys have girl names. I've known several Ashley's and Stacey's. Poor kids..
Plus this goes off of the census data, so odds are the data has errors. - Flex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Generated identities: 15836" as of midnight... can't wait to see tomorrow after all the digging.
- bliz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Nice if you ever wanted to become another person."
More like "Nice if you ever became another wanted person." - apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Plus... if I save this to an auto-form generator then I won't get spam or called or mailed crap. Just call me Enrique Rodriguez :).
- sigintop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This actually might be handy when you're filling out forms to get access to something so that you don't give away any information about yourself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I picked 20 (or was it 30? I don't remember) of the 70 most common street names (according to the census), and then generate a 3 digit house number. It really is surprising how many will validate, especially when using the USPS system (which tends to be a bit more forgiving).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4^ Because while finding all those things is "easy", its much easier to have something generate a *realistic* random name and a realistic random address with the zip and what not.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Wouldn't it take more effort to consult this webpage than to simply use ones *brain* to think of a fake name?
Its not that hard.
Still, I digg for effort. - handsomecrown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The address number and the street do not create a valid address according to Google Maps.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3when i saw that page 2 mins ago. Havent refreshed since
Generated identities: 14519
EDIT: Within 10 seconds of posting.
Generated identities: 16579
Keep refreshing. The number goes up exponentially - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Mother's maiden name: Shellnut" ?
- djgump35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I say, just go find an address that doesn't exist on your own street, with the fake name and all, and change a couple numbers in your own phone number.
- AlanBrunsdon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Handy if, like me, you like to go to spammers' websites and fill in a lot of fake orders for viagra and stuff. Would be nice if he included a random credit card number generator that fitted the Visa/Mastercard pattern.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I didn't expect anyone to find this site yet. I haven't added in the feature of choosing male or female (or random) yet. It is ONLY showing male names right now.
I'd change it, but don't want to take the risk of breaking it on accident while so many people are checking it out. I'll probably update it sometime tomorrow. - FyreGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Weird. There are (according to the site) 3 times as many potential female names as male ones. However, both times I accessed the site it took over 5 refreshes to find a female name.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Nice if you ever wanted to become another person."
If I wanted to truly be another person, at least on the surface from an online form, I think I'd use a real person's name and address (and maybe use EFF's Tor software to make it seem like another guy/IP address than me registered, just to be sure anyone would be confused if trying to trace back who filled in the form). ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I googled the name it came up with for me and the only result was for a person on a 19th century census record. Fun stuff.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a world famous tennis player called David Nalbandian, from Argentina:
http://www.google.es/search?hl=es&q=Nalbandian&meta= - GWoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I first saw the generator I was number 209...
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12 of the 3 times I've done this, I've got actual addresses(I know thx to google earth). This is scary.
- steelsun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting idea, but some modifications need to be done:
1) Weight the first and last names on actual population examples (use US census data or SSN popular name data). i.e. James/Jim is much more common than Xavier, but each as likely to show up in this dataset being used. Likewise Smith or Rodriguez is more common than Humphalossa.
2) Weight the probability of the city/state to actua; population densities. i.e The Big 4 (New York, LA, Chicago, Houston) are more likely to show than Merritt Island or Deerville. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm.. Doing a quick look online, the bay area has several area codes, and the post office allows San Francisco to be listed as the city for several of them. For example, 650 is technically most of San Mateo county, but for the couple zip codes I tested that have 650 area codes, the post office will accept San Francisco as the city.
- paulchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1needs work. i got a san francisco address with a 650 area code. it's 415
