- lucidforest, on 09/23/2008, -3/+235What we software designers should take from this is that we should harass the user as little as possible and only when absolutely necessary. To me this is a symptom of the boy who cried wolf. Too many dialogs, not enough thought. We need to design software from the users' perspective not ours as we are wont to do.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 09/23/2008, -2/+179So does this mean I don't get my free laptop?
- iCanHasUsername, on 09/23/2008, -39/+176They actually had to do research to confirm most pc users are idiots?
- sockpuppets, on 09/23/2008, -1/+121Anyone with a yahoo toolbar did.
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -23/+139Just because someone pays extra for something just to be "cool" doesn't mean they're stupid. It means they're shallow and stupid.
- chrissku, on 09/23/2008, -16/+126"Fake popup study sadly confirms most users are idiots"
The 2000 and 2004 Presidential election confirmed that we have many idiots amongst us. - wukillabee, on 09/23/2008, -55/+158actually 100% of mac users are idiots because they were stupid enough to actually buy one
- gotalkmoney, on 09/23/2008, -2/+101Dang it and I thought I was the 1,000,000th visitor to the website
- mohavlich, on 09/23/2008, -0/+78Considering they were giving this "test" to a bunch of college students, I'm going to go ahead and assume that it was done on school computers. Making this test slightly ridiculous. What do they care what happens to school owned computers? They don't care at all. As long as they're not putting their own computers at risk, they'll click anything that pops up as long as it speeds up whatever they're doing at the time.
- eSentrik, on 09/23/2008, -1/+60I wonder how many people mindlessly click "Next" during installation wizards...
- auer1816, on 09/23/2008, -4/+63Funniest part of the whole story: COLLEGE STUDENTS. These are people who have grown up with computers and Internet.
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -1/+59I got scolded for removing my friend's google toolbar. He said he used it to search without going to google.com, so I showed him the search box in his browser, but it frightened him, so I had to re-install google toolbar.
- megamod, on 09/23/2008, -0/+57My mom downloaded XP AntiVirus because she honestly thought that the pop up was giving her an accurate number of infections or her computer without even scanning the computer.
She panicked and downloaded the software hoping to fix all of her "infections" even though up to that point the computer was malware free...emphasis on "up to that point".
Google Chrome tries to minimize the "I'll click whatever just get out of my face you stupid pop up" effect by hiding the dialog windows. Seems like a nice solution. The window is still there if it was indeed a legitimate pop up. - Elshar, on 09/23/2008, -3/+45I've done that on accident too, but mostly because the vast majority of installation wizards have no *real* options on the page.
1) "Click next to start the install"
2) "If you want to keep going, click next again"
3) "Choose where to install this to, then click next"
4) "Choose if you want to install the only (actually grayed-out and required) optional package, click next"
5) "Wait while we transfer some files and then click next again"
6) "After everything's finished, click next to get to read a 'congratulations on clicking next a dozen times! You're done. Click next"
7) "Click Finish to close this wizard thing."
Most of this could be solved with a single-window options screen with everything on it. Maybe have some tabs if it's got a whole lot of elaborate options (Which is ... never). - thedragon4453, on 09/23/2008, -0/+40Keep clicking! One of those popups has to be legit.
- georgemason01, on 09/23/2008, -0/+40Everyone's mom has done that.
- yohnstoppable, on 09/23/2008, -0/+39My idiot ex wife did. I was on the phone with her, and SPECIFICALLY said to uncheck the stupid "advertisements on your browser" crap, but nope...
Then bitched at me for all the popups she'd get when browsing anything. Moron. Seriously, what makes idiots like this just shut down their brain and not even try to understand something?
"Ok, now click the..."
"click the what? There are so many things to click! I don't get it, I'm lost. I can't do it"
"You're ***** retarded" - Jwoey, on 09/23/2008, -4/+42One thing I've always hated about Adblock is that you have to tell everyone you have it, and that anyone who doesn't have it is Amish. I never understood why that's a requirement.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 09/23/2008, -7/+43Yeah and I'm sure spelling your name "D14BL0" works with the ladies too. You're not the devil or nearly as bad ass, or cool.
Douche. - brentologist, on 09/23/2008, -4/+40Oh come on now. Most of us here that read DIGG are very computer literate. I would say that a large percentage of us may even do computer professionally. If you don't know what an understitch is in sewing does that make you an idiot? If you don't know what a piston does in a car does that make you an idiot? No, that just makes you not a professional sewer or mechanic. We do computers all day long,, these people do it when they want to see what movie is playing. They aren't computer professionals and need help being educated not picked at. This doesn't make them idiots.
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -20/+55Just because you use a Mac doesn't mean you're a computer genius.
In fact, that's the reason most switch to Macs in the first place. Because they can't use real computers.
/sarcasm - doc99, on 09/23/2008, -0/+35I think what Soragon was trying to say was, because the pop up doesn't have the feel of OS X, it's going to be harder to fool someone with a Mac.
- aznhomig, on 09/23/2008, -2/+37Does "User Account Control" ring any bells?
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -13/+44Have fun getting laid as frequently as you need to reboot, then.
- Fhwqhgads, on 09/23/2008, -1/+32"winows" users
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -10/+41Adblock + NoScript = win
- coyote1284, on 09/23/2008, -0/+28These are people who wouldn't give a crap about a computer that is not their own.
- sinkhead, on 09/23/2008, -0/+26DO NOT CLICK THAT LINK.
Gore, goatse etc spamming popups, tens of Quicktime vids slow down the page so much you can't really do anything about it. Not nice. - xutopia, on 09/23/2008, -0/+24Actually most people are stupid period.
- ryansmith18, on 09/23/2008, -0/+23Yes....this article was definitely about Windows vs. Mac....definitely.
- Slashered, on 09/23/2008, -3/+26Most people want to browse the web like they do with everything else in society, as quick and fast as possible without worrying about the consequences. Dozens of fast food chains with thousands of locations, train wrecks due to text messaging, and a trillion dollar debt later...
- yohnstoppable, on 09/23/2008, -0/+23I'm still waiting on all my free ipod nanos. Gonna sell all 2000 of them on ebay once they arrive.
- Madcow17, on 09/23/2008, -0/+23Dude i've tried explaining a PC solution over the phone.. many... many.. times.. and your last set of quotes NAILED it.
"Click next"
"Ok, done"
"Now open your browser and go to this site "
"Ok, done"
"Now on that site go to--"
"Wait.. click next where?"
Then when they're too dumb to get it working they assume its now your duty to get it working: "Well maybe you could come over and take a look at it." yeah thats what i want to do after a long ass day of work, go sit at someone elses house working on a computer that everyone in their entire family messed up by doing the very essence of what this article is about. It blows so hard when everyone thinks you're such a badass on a computer and you're really not (like me, i can build one, and i know my way around, but i'm far from tech support) and you're always getting called.
Then there was this time i was helping a woman who had 5 year old kids running around:
"Ok now the most important step, follow along closely. Click next then cl--"
"Hey!... Put that down!.. Stop hitting him!"
"Hi?"
"Sorry keep go-- DAMNIT I SAID PUT THAT DOWN! Thats it! hold on a minute please"
*incoherent motherly rage in the background*
"Ok sorry, can we start over?"
But yes. tech help over the phone = more effective for suicide than a shotgun blast straight to the face.
/rant end - wolferz, on 09/23/2008, -0/+22Behold, the main source of instability and problems on Windows: user error.
It's always been hard to reconcile how some many people could claim XP was so unstable when my own experiences as a computer tech showed there was *always* a very specific cause for instability. In 97% of the cases it was spyware and adware causing problems. From there 2% were hardware, .9% drivers, and .1% software bugs. Now that Vista has been released it's the exact same story
Most computer users, especially the ones who think they know what they are doing, have no idea about any of this stuff. Most of my friends try to brag about their computer knowledge but end up showing, unknowingly, how little they actually know about computers. Most of the professional computer techs I've run into have done the same, spitting out garbage about having to defrag NTFS partitions all the time or other nonsense. There are very very few people, even inside the computer industry, that actually know what they are talking about.
End result is a lot of people, who seem credible to the untrained eye, blaming Windows for their problems when it's really the malware they have let onto their computer.
On a side note, its also hard to reconcile how, having used linux for about 10 years now, my linux computers always have more problems than my windows computers but every one says linux is more reliable. I'm willing to bet this is a related phenomenon. - BeatPunchbeef, on 09/23/2008, -1/+22No, I think he is saying that Windows users get laid a lot because they have a lot of spare time rebooting their systems. And after they log in, they have time for another quickie while desktop becomes usable.
Sounds like a real win-win situation. - DangQuesadilla, on 09/23/2008, -4/+24YES!! I will love you forever if you stop harassing us users with dialogue boxes! Thank you for realizing this.
- DangQuesadilla, on 09/23/2008, -1/+21 "The results suggest that a familiarity with Windows dialogs have bred a degree of contempt and that users simply don't care what the boxes say anymore."
Never a truer statement was made. - Slydevil01, on 09/23/2008, -1/+20So anyone here professionally do computer?
- ErrorLoading, on 09/23/2008, -1/+20*User Access Control
While on my home machine I hate it and turned it off, as a System Administrator I love it. - Yousty, on 09/23/2008, -0/+18Was your friend's name Homer Simpson?
- mycoplasma, on 09/23/2008, -12/+28not a problem for linux users :-)
- coyote1284, on 09/23/2008, -3/+19mictester's comment make me glad I'm a Widows user.
- Dalhectar, on 09/23/2008, -10/+25Dalhectar does not endorse changing system permissions on other people's computers. Also, Dalhectar does not recommend shouting "Firefox + Adblock" to your non-tech savvy friends. Either action will make the person look like a tool.
Similar to speaking in the third person. - HonoredMule, on 09/23/2008, -1/+14It's been just as busy as usual for me, and with much more diverse and interesting content. I'm frankly overjoyed to be free of those spammers.
- 1337Einstein, on 09/23/2008, -0/+13I love computers, just not like that.
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -2/+14Dugg for idiots.
- etx313, on 09/23/2008, -14/+26Look! Another IT I'm so much brighter than you 'Professional'!!
- Elshar, on 09/23/2008, -2/+14I don't know why you're getting dug down. I use FF + Adblock plus + noscript and flashblock. Stops all that nonsense right in it's tracks. And, there's less stuff for the browser to load.
Are there equivalent plugins for IE, Opera, etc? I've shown many, many people (I often do service calls for a local ISP) multiple sites with both IE and my FF setup, and they ALWAYS prefer the way the page comes up in FF with those plugins. - TotalDouche, on 09/23/2008, -0/+12Yeah dude I had to shut down my work comp. ***** *****.
- iofthestorm, on 09/23/2008, -0/+11@Pawfox: That doesn't really work since you have to block each thing manually. The beauty of adblock is that it uses regex to block ads from a filterset.
