- pdiddy827, on 05/22/2008, -5/+80a redesign is long over due for them
- robert001, on 05/22/2008, -1/+54See the design previews here:
http://www.facebook.com/FacebookPreviews - r3zonance, on 05/22/2008, -4/+52If only the re-design included the removal of the Application API, because that was by far the worst thing EVER to happen.
I hate getting "bitten by vampires", and having people send crap to a Funwall (I refuse to get) and Super Funwall. - punchinelli, on 05/22/2008, -2/+40The only reason they got into this mess is because of the applications. Facebook used to have a sleek and mature design - once the stupid clown applications were introduced, it turned into a kindergarten ***** of javascript strewn all over sorority girl's pages.
- mattus, on 05/22/2008, -1/+37Anything that gets the dozens of vampire, skater and 'nicest friends' applications off the main profile page is good by me.
- sovereign3, on 05/22/2008, -0/+26The only thing I don't like about the new design is that it removes your basic profile from the front page. From the previews, it looks as though your "wall" becomes your new front page. Am I the only one that finds this counterintuitive? If someone goes to your FB page, the first thing they should see is your name, school, location, DOB, etc., and not "Hey, last night was fun! Let's do it again sometime!"
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -4/+27About damn time.
- mattus, on 05/22/2008, -0/+18Personally I wouldn't put 'usability' and 'MySpace' anywhere in the same sentence.
- Baku, on 05/22/2008, -0/+16Or an option to opt-out from all application invites.
- thomasprebble, on 05/22/2008, -3/+19Can you please make it so you don't get asked to invite all your friends when you install an application? It's really ***** annoying. Thank you.
- theHM, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12Actually, they showed that the first thing you see (by default) is the feed. I'm hoping this is customisable, though.
- TheDiceMan, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12Thank god, the design and layout atm is an absolute shambles and is really the main thing keeping me away - so many of my friends pages are absolutley crammed full of shoite. So many times I've had:
'Your friend has sent you X - but i'm afraid muggings you'll have to install Y to see it'
nooooooooooooo ***** off! - lucidguru, on 05/22/2008, -7/+17How can you redesign a site to clear clutter when the entire site is nothing but clutter?
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -6/+16I didn't get into it because it was very confusing. I liked the features, but on one page, there is entirely too much going on.
- WebmasterNeal, on 05/22/2008, -3/+11Uh, unless you went to harvard there really wasn't much of a facebook during pre 2005 minus a crappy table based layout.
- viruz, on 05/22/2008, -1/+8what we need is a universal block of non facebook application.
- TheDiceMan, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7No, I'm sure they have no members
- rblancarte, on 05/22/2008, -1/+6It was the double edged sword. They needed to allow applications so that they could expand content far beyond what they would ever do. But then because of it, we ended up with Vampires, Ninjas, all sorts of dumb polls etc.
Because of it, my use of Facebook significantly dropped off once they released the API. Hopefully this redesign will clean up much of the problems caused by the apps. - cadmiumpaint, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5they consider that to be a redesign? wow. way to really mix things up. completely worthless.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+6I like having my identity on other sites like Flickr, Vimeo, and even Digg integrated into one Facebook profile. The applications can be great and I'm glad I can finally show off this information in a cleaner, more elegant manner.
- JABro, on 05/22/2008, -1/+6That doesn't look very "cleaned up" to me.
- Manhunt545, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5Yes. You will be able to choose what tab will open first
- daveisfera, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4How about making it so that you don't have to install the app yourself just to interact with it on someone's profile? That would be the biggest difference maker (or maybe they just like the "viral" nature of apps).
- inactive, on 05/22/2008, -2/+6Cleaning up facebook is very easy: get rid of apps :)
- ryanpc, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5No no... that would make *far* too much sense!
- Andyschism, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5I was expecting alot more, it just looks like they shifted things around. Here is a tip, less is more, keep it simple stupid!
- brownspank, on 05/22/2008, -3/+7Wait, is that a trick question?
- cybrspin, on 05/22/2008, -6/+10wway to much spam, need more control over what your friends are sending you on facebook.
- mattus, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Yeah, sorry... meant to reply to Goalieguy's comment but clicked the wrong link!
- Guzer, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4Yep I just recently started using facebook and I agree. Several changes should be made. Digg should take a close look at their system as well. Clutter is here also.
- RandomEyes, on 05/22/2008, -3/+7we'll see if this change is actually successful ...
- Sacrifice, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Granted there are many useless applications, but some are useful or informative. The redesign will be nice since the apps will be tucked away in their own tab.
- gasin, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Wait! You find Facebook confusing? I would like to know what about it you find confusing. B/C from a usability and interaction point of view, I think it is by far the best experience you can get. Of course there is a learning curve but that goes for any product/services that you sign up for!
As for the redesign - it seems more of enhancements from what I have seen with the addition of tabs on profile pages etc. - ryanpc, on 05/22/2008, -2/+5You can sign up for an account with nothing more than a name, e-mail address, and birthday (to verify age.) I'd hardly call this invasive.
Past that, you can opt to supply additional details, but you are in no way obligated. - peggs82, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3are you high?
- via509, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4MySpace is for poor people
- mattus, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4Yes - more than 70 million of them. Trying to be 'individual' by making sarcastic Facebook comments isn't cool.
- troGGers, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4So the solution is to break content up into a tabbed interface? Way to be pioneers? I'd rather just go back to what they had before, a simple one page layout without all the non 3rd party junk. Having to click to see someone's info as opposed to their wall is silly...there are far better ways to better use screen real estate, if that's what they're going for.
- punkcat, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3same, but its not the layout of facebook thats the problem, its the thousands of ***** apps
- HeDiggMe, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Props for digging the printable version.
- jonathantneal, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2How did this slip in? It's with the photos for this article, and it's the only one seemingly unrelated to the topic.
"Missy Shields walks along Seventh Avenue in New York in this photo taken March 26, 2008. Shields hired New York photographer Izaz Rony, who is tapping into the demand for candid photography in a society increasingly keen to document often mundane details of daily life on Web sites like Facebook and YouTube."
Unless all you need to do is submit anything with a buzzword to get yourself on Reuters. Hmm, If I hire a photographer, can I get into any Reuters articles that I want? "Jonathan Neal. Facebook. Not on it." I'm gonna be famous.
m - theHM, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2I want to put data online, but I'd like to be able to have at least a little control over who has access to it. After all, I know that a burglar could steal my possessions but I still put a lock on the door to reduce the likelihood of it happening.
- theHM, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2That was only the beginning of this month, and all Facebook did to fix it was to block that one application. They haven't stopped allowing applications access to users' friends' data.
- Oppslagsverk, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2What i meant was 300 add requests from so called friends.
- every2ndcounts, on 05/22/2008, -3/+5I stopped using facebook when it became too obnoxious.
- theHM, on 05/22/2008, -0/+21: You have complete control over who you allow to see your profile, what is posted to your profile, and what people you haven't added as a friend can see. By default, it is somewhat more permissive than I'd like, which is why I have disabled a lot of the features, such as information being posted to my minifeed, non-members seeing my friends etc.
2: Your signature is not required on Digg, and is generally considered obnoxious. Moreover, posting a URL in the signature is considered spamming. I've chosen not to bury you, since you're obviously new here, but posting irrelevant URLs will generally earn you a lot of burying, regardless of whether people agree with you. - inactive, on 05/22/2008, -3/+5Not mine - I don;t add them because I'm not retarded.
- doshindude, on 05/22/2008, -4/+6learn to use the "block application" button, or the "mark app as spam" button.
Reading is fun, kids. -
