hahahahhahaahha......that makes it the single most valuable steaming pile of ***** in the history of the universe - camkerr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+321"ROFL, what an idiot" Well at least he knows how to spell billion
- sicc, on 10/12/2007, -10/+317I'm sorry, but this is more than TRIPLE what was paid for Myspace, this kid must think facebook is really something special.
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -6/+162"Sir, we'll offer you 1.6 billion..."
-"No."
"How about 1.6 billon?"
-"Sold." - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -14/+146Agreed... plus I would think that since MySpace popularity is declining, Facebook is likely to follow suit (especially since they've opened it up to everyone it loses appeal from college students).
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+127He is probably holding out for 1.83 trillion dollars...oh wait, no, that's the RIAA....
- spambully, on 10/12/2007, -3/+125Take the money and run!
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -17/+127Actually, no. This "kid" probably just wants to keep Facebook.com for himself and his company for now. I definitely would prefer Mark Zuckerberg stayed top dog for facebook since he is doing a fine job at it. I wouldn't want a ***** company like Yahoo buying out facebook and ruining it with ads all over and what not.
- drgordonfreeman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+100If Yahoo offered $1.6 billion for Facebook, then it is by definition worth that much.
- MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -14/+94Really? Facebook is awesome and didn't fall victim to the same crap that Myspace did.
I say bravo to Mark Zuckerberg. Yahoo would have trashed Facebook. - scott1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+82We all know what happens next:
http://digg.com/tech_news/The_Story_of_Friendster_s_Failure - outhouseinput, on 10/12/2007, -13/+891.6 Billion? That site is NOT WORTH THAT MUCH.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+73Maybe he's holding out for a certain buyer rather than a certain dollar amount?
Or maybe he just digs what he's doing too much to put it in someone else's hands? Nah, couldn't be that... - tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -14/+81Billon?
ROFL, what an idiot. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+59I don't know who's sillier - Yahoo or the guy who turned them down.
For that kind of money one could buy a headquarter with a couple of hundred staff, make a duplicate site, have a ginormous Nintendo-style media-hyping-blitz to sell it to the kids, *and* still have money left for a jet, a mansion, a private island in the caribbean, and living comfortably ever after. - mitrebox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+521.6b offer
13m users
Can I just sell my account then? $123? - alen3K, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42The Holiday spirit got into u too ?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42It's probably based on the analysis that Myspace is now worth "$6 billion"
- fishrjv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39@sic:
facebook is far superior to myspace in a plethora of different ways. for all intents and purposes, myspace is *****.. from its coding to its users, and it shouldn't have sold for 10 million. at least facebook makes an effort to look aesthetically pleasing and runs on decent servers. - MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38@Dustyshadow
Are you kidding me?
Myspace proved to me that there are millions of people in this world that should NEVER be allowed to design websites... EVER. - pinkgreenblue, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41Yes, although more registered users means more revenue. I personally blocked the ability to search for me if you're not in a college network. So for me it's as though Facebook is college-only, yet Facebook gets to deliver advertisements to anyone who wants to register and use the site.
- tlow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40I guess I'm slightly more qualified than most to comment on this story ( I have actually met Zuckerberg). This guy is a complete doosche-bag, nothing more. Don't give him credit for being smart or holding to his guns, he is merely being a prick.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34I think he wants 100 billion dollars.
- alen3K, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Llol. There are still people who think Tom owned Myspace? Get your facts right nerd.
- revmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34maybe he's just waitin for google.
- kmckanna, on 10/12/2007, -14/+42"One story has it that Microsoft had to abandon a planned 8am conference call with Zuckerberg because he said that he would still be in bed then."
Hahahaha, you know this kid kicks ass when he has the balls to pull something like that (above). That cracks me up. Most kids his age would be the companies little bitch and be like, ":-O... Oh--okay, anything you say."
Honestly, he's from Harvard and might have (have not done my research) gone to the Business college of it, but if he did, he may know what he is doing. He can make more by bargaining or investing more into Facebook and selling in the future.
P.S. I don' t know if calling him an idiot is very justifiable... I mean, sure that's a lot of money, but let's remember he DID get into Harvard, now about him dropping out-- he obviously had his reasons to because even Bill Gates dropped out to promote Microsoft. Sure, Facebook isn't as big as Microsoft, but they both took the same GENERAL path. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Please stop trying.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Shhh, they're mating.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28WTF..
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27I'll kill them for $1000
(Send me a PM) - karmakungfu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26What ever happened to objective reporting? This article is clearly slanted as an attack on Zuckerberg.
Granted, I wouldn't turn down a billion dollars from Yahoo. They own Flickr and del.icio.us, but let those sites do their own thing. Still, if Yahoo is now trying to raise 1.6 billion, then Zuckerberg made a pretty good choice to hold out. - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20*cough*google*cough*
- MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -15/+34And that's exactly why Mark Zuckerberg is a great guy. He doesn't want to screw millions of Facebook users (who made him big in the first place) by selling it off to a company that he knows will trash the site he put his heart and soul into. Good for him.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24@mercurysquad:
You mean like the ads Yahoo! put all over Flickr and Del.icio.us when it bought those two? Oh wait, you mean they haven't? Huh. Quit spreading FUD, asshat. - xfTwitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13yea, he stands to make much more money if he holds on to it and goes IPO. Hell, even yahoo said that it would do a billion a year in advertising revenue in a few years. That combined with an IPO and hey, as an added bonus, he gets to do what he wants, retain control and be happy.
Less a moron, more a business man that didn't see selling to yahoo as his exit strategy. - Woodfires, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Arrogance and attitude ... will be fascinating to watch.
- barakatx2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard lol.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I dunno, did they trash Flickr or del.icio.us?
They would more than likely have given facebook the same kinda deal. I know that if it were me, i'd have seriously looked at taking the money. - sludgely, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The valuation yahoo did of facebook projects by 2012 that they will have annual EBITDA in excess of 1 billion dollars. If thats true, not accepting the offer is damn smart.
- jackminardi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12i dont agree with you at all but i like you terminology
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Maybe he just likes running the company? Maybe he makes plenty of money from it already? Maybe there's more in his life than money?
- soapycub, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I use Facebook and I totally agree with you -- If Yahoo got their hands on it, I can see the privacy aspect of it going out the window as Yahoo would turn it into some hacked up MySpace clone.
Facebook is not MySpace; it's a very useful networking tool to keep in touch with old school and work mates. As an animator, it's a great resource as it allows us to help each other out sourcing jobs and passing on recommendations.
I'm glad he knocked them back and I hope Facebook stays the way it is. - michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Facebook isn't even a great site in my opinion.
I started back to a University and got an account on Facebook because I heard it was so popular.
I honestly don't see what the deal is. Then again I feel the same about MySpace.
To me they are both extremely ***** stupid. not to put to fine a point on it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You give me the 1.5 billion capital and I'll get started.
- tweak50, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Has it ever occurred to anyone that maybe he really doesn't want to sell it?
- totallydismayed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It sounds like a lot of money, but I think you guys are assuming a lot. I mean do we have any idea of the terms of this deal?
Here's a typical scenario: 100% stock payment (no cash), minimum of 5 years before shares are excersisable/vested, with a graduated set of exercise dates (e.g. you can cash in 30% in 5 years, the next 20% 2 years after that, etc.), with some kind of "you must work for us for x number of years as our bitch to ensure a smooth transition" clause. If that were the deal and you owned Facebook, would it still be appealing to you?
Thinking about all of this in depth, if his share is $500 million, there's no guarantee that Yahoo stock will still be worth that in 5 years. And even if it is (a break-even scenario), the present value of $500 million 5 years from now is around $431 million. If you assume they stretch things out as long as 10 years, and we have a few years of aggressive inflation in there, the payout could be as low as $300 million in today's dollars. Still a lot of money, but perhaps not what his company is really worth.
Or maybe he's one of the few business people left in America who actually wants to own his own business long-term and not sell out. Imagine that. - timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'm glad he didn't do this. Facebook is a profitable company that gives back to the OSS community. They've made major contributions to memcached and PHP. They're also one of the largest MySQL installations and the largest photo sites in the world. Read their engineering page and look into some of the stuff they've contributed.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You compare any Facebook page to a MySpace page and you can clearly tell that the Facebook one is 100x better looking, hands down. MySpace needs to learn what a decent looking layout looks like and not have crap splattered everywhere on the page!
- baldr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@dustyshadow
