- Lixnig, on 07/02/2009, -3/+37It's funny how everyone thinks that facebook apparently knows the situation between the user and the suggestions. As far as I know, it is simply searching a graph and suggesting people within a certain distance from the user...it doesn't know that you had a bad breakup, and it doesn't know it's your ex's wife...yeah, I know it sucks when you have to look at a picture with your ex and the person they left you for, but the search doesn't take your feelings into consideration and probably never will.
- Lucas123, on 07/02/2009, -0/+33I want any social networking service I use to be able to determine my feelings at any given time and adjust its suggested friends list to my emotions. If it doesn't have that algorithm running on its servers, I'm outa there.
- vectoor, on 07/02/2009, -1/+26Buried for stupidity
- smashblu, on 07/02/2009, -0/+23I hope this is a joke. It's a ***** computer program, all it knows is that "this is someone you might know".
- Mossman85, on 07/02/2009, -7/+26I don't know about you guys, but I smoke a lot of pot.
- blitzwing85, on 07/02/2009, -1/+20Chill out woman. It's no wonder the dude was cheating on you, you paranoid nut. It's not as if Facebook forces you to add them as friends. Somebody needs to get over that breakup.
- WordsnCollision, on 07/02/2009, -0/+16Does that apply to those convicted of shooting their ex's?
- EnTaroTassadar, on 07/02/2009, -0/+16Dugg for being more relevant than the actual article. Thank you.
- 44Bigs, on 07/02/2009, -0/+13Oh come on, my ex has been on my reccomendation list for years. Couldn't care less :)
- phate666x, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12Utterly ridiculous. Why do older adults think technology is out to get them all the time? If you think Facebook is taking over your life, get the hell off of it...buried
- sfcaptainrob, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9Or is it self aware?? Maybe Facebook = Skynet.
- lostinspac3, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9PEBKAC
- kentifer, on 07/02/2009, -2/+10There's sort of this feature called "Block People" that Facebook offers.
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/privacy/?ref=mb - EnTaroTassadar, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8My ex was suggested to me. We'd been broken up long before either of us even signed up for Facebook. We had mutual friends and got suggested.
And then we got back together through Facebook's recommendation.
So what does that tell you (other than the fact that I have poor judgment, that is)? - rocknog, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6Okay yeah, I'll admit, I'd be less than happy if my ex showed up on my suggestions list... But for the love of God, facebook isn't self-aware or anything, it can't possibly know that it would be a bad thing to do. You just gotta realize it's a possibility with imperfect technology and get over it.
- ayeroxor, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7maybe you should join him some time.
- Armor1901, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7Because my ex is a ***** whore
- joe1985, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6It is statistical analysis, not magic.
These kind of articles lower my expectations for humanity. - cygnus2112, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5FTA: Someone published their email list and it made a match.
- ThinkIcouldburn, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Hence why there is the amazing block feature.
- krisrm, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4What's even more pathetic is the amount of freaking out that would happen if Facebook *did* know something about whether or not you had dated this person before, and kept track of it to do stupid things like target ads to heartbroken ex-lovers... "Thinking of killing yourself? Our new ultra-strength nylon rope will do the trick!"
Edit: I forgot to do that ad in my BILLY MAYS VOICE. Have mercy, Billy :( - diggapleeeze, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Clicking the "X" to stop that person from appearing in the friends suggestion area, as the article and FB rep states, does not work. I've done that and the same people keep reappearing days later.
- DontHassleHoff, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4There are a number of things that the "suggestion box" does not do that it could:
- NEVER show someone who you defriended
- NEVER show someone that you clicked "X" for before
- NEVER show someone you have previously blocked
Simple filters if you think about it but I'm sure the scale on which they must be implemented is staggering, so FB takes the easy way out and does not filter the suggestions. I mean how much stupider could the suggestion box get? If I click "X" on any suggestion, I should not see it again, but it will reappear sometimes seconds later. - ganjamonsta, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4how ***** retarded...
- duewydo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4God I hate it when my mother-in-law shows up on the suggestions list. Gag me...
- ayeroxor, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Exactly. This is just whining by people who probably think computers run on magic and puppydogs.
- ganjamonsta, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4so are you trying to say the evil facebook mind control program worked on you?
- krisrm, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4What a moron... if that honestly bothers you *that* much, it's no wonder you can't make a relationship work.
- SeanRockCity, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3amen to that man.....
- Cougnut415, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Well put. You know that south park episode where they explain how the mormon religion starts? While reading that article I kept thinking to myself: Helen A.S. Popkin logged onto facebook, dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb...
- lindenwold, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5The people they talked to for this article need to get hit by a bus.
Also . . . buried for being a poorly writtten article about absolutely nothing.
. . . the internet isn't like a newspaper, you don't have to "fill space." If you have nothing to write, just don't write anything. - EnTaroTassadar, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4ARE YOU SMARTER THAN YOUR EX?!
Well duh, no *****. That's why we broke up in the first place. - kevro, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Facebook can track relation ships if you both had the information on your page as dating or married. The more I think about it the more I realize they do have a LOT of information about us and those around us. They've made us complacent and happy to fork over all those details unlike anything that has come before.
- lostinspac3, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3indeed +1
- kingp, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Skybook...or Facenet even.
- arTech, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2“To be clear, there are a few ways to make sure people you don’t want to appear in your friend suggestions don't show up again," he said. "Click the ‘X’ next to the icon, and it will stop them from reappearing in friend suggestions.
-------
What a load of bs. I keep clicking on X and same people reappear days later. - ayeroxor, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Speaking of, did you teach her that thing she does with her you-know-what when she's doing you-know-what? That's ***** magic, man. We all really owe you some thanks for that.
- ayeroxor, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2and IT'S RIGHT!
/really? the complaint is "you're right, but they give me bad emotions, and the computer should know that"???
//DIAF - AdmiralAcbar, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Do you know how many time's I've accidentally clicked the "x" on someone I didn't mean to because of the number of irrelevant people?
- Spyder2k, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2My ex and affiliates reside solely on my block list
- lilrabbit129, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Its all oppurtunity cost. How much time/money would it take to implement this feature? How much good would it do?
In the end it probably comes down to a lot of effort for not enough return. - DontHassleHoff, on 07/02/2009, -0/+15?
1?
1,209?
A good UX would be to have the "All Suggestions" link show you the huge range that Facebook is suggesting for you, including those you've X'ed, but then filter out the ones that keep appearing on your home page.
Especially annoying are the old high school acquaintances that you once friended but then de-friended. They keep popping up on my screen and I'm sure I pop up on theirs (which also shows them they were de-friended, going against FB's general policy of secretive de-friending). - Moralogic, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1facepalm
- ayeroxor, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1simple. People fear what they don't understand.
- foltaggio, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1After reading this, I checked my suggestions list and saw someone I knew from a forum I frequent, and I keep my online life and facebook life as separate as possible.. *****.
- kevro, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Nothing changes immediately, it's the long term consequences one has to think about. That's a lot of information. One day you try getting hired with a company but the hiring manager looks you up and sees that you used to date a friend of his and "it went badly" or even worse he dated her before you. There's a million permutations with millions of bits of information that stays with you to the end.
- deff, on 07/02/2009, -1/+2Why the text message hate? If anything Twitter is more responsible.
- ayeroxor, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Layer 8 issue: System needs different chair/keyboard interface.
- mauriciopina, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Don't be a hater. You are just mad because no one wants to have a conversation with you.
