- redlemon, on 11/14/2007, -3/+97so wait, i get to look at VIDEOS of people drinking now!?
- shifty2, on 11/14/2007, -5/+73sounds like a typical middle school myspace user statement.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/14/2007, -4/+40As much as I hate YouTube, it's a joke to think facebook even stands a chance as competition.
- popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34YouTube has no secret formula. Video on the web is going to be as common as .jpeg images on the web.
The only things YouTube has proven to the world are:
1) Online video has enormous demand.
2) Google is willing to lose absurdly mad cash on bandwidth costs. - webtroy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Facebook is by far the cleanest Social Networking Site, and why shouldn't they compete in the Video Sharing Market? .. its fair game. Youtube has its flaws, MySpace is great for musicians, but for the average joe its pretty much useless and riddled with annoying and very large Advertisements.
Facebook on the other hand, clean interface, "seems" more secure than the rest (you can customize your privacy settings, letting little or no one to be able to see your profile, or have it open for the public. Barely any spam either. Their Facebook Platform news scares me a bit, but in the end, it sounds like it will be widget based system. So if you dont want any of the junk, just dont add the widgets.. Facebook follows the golden rule of "keep it simple.. stupid." and thats why I think they will do very well in the days to come.
run on sentances FTW - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20I really don't see it as a real competitor to YouTube. They aren't even setting it up for embeds. I think it's just more of a co-exister.
- wingnut21, on 10/11/2007, -3/+213) Flash video is best for the web.
- lo0ol, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19So what is social networking about then? Because I think social networking means very different things to different people. I like to share my photos to my friends, and Facebook takes care of that extremely well. Should they stop their Photos service since it's not exactly about social networking (even though it's the largest photo service on the web today). For others, social networking involves telling people their thoughts, particularly via blogging, and Facebook Notes is their outlet for that. The Facebook API has nothing to do with social networking at its core; should they drop that? Never mind that hundreds of cool social apps are being built on top of it.
My point is that Facebook *is* "improving social networking". It's just that different people have different concepts of it, and that's... life. I don't blog that much on Facebook Notes, but it's cool that my friends do, and it's cool that I can get my voice out there to a lot of people in a couple seconds. That, among many other things they do well, is social networking. - taylorhayward, on 10/11/2007, -13/+28Are you a moron? May I introduce you to a little site known as Alexa.
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?q=facebook.com&url=facebook.com/
You will note the "19" next to where it says "Traffic Rank". Uuuhhhhh, ya. - yonman14, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12All these comments about facebook sucking and turning into a myspace clone sound awfully similar to the comments made after the now not-so-recent addition of feeds as well as the opening of facebook to everyone. Seems like some people just won't allow themselves to be proven wrong.
That being said, none of these new applications are particularly appealing, but I'm sure that will change when more are developed. - GCarden, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Why, didn't you know? EVERY socialnetworkingvideosharingusergeneratedcontent site nowadays is a MySpaceYouTubeFlickrDigg killer.
- esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12This is a one year comparison of myspace, digg, and facebook.
facebook is actually getting more hits than digg!

You forgot Steven Colbert - Kypt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11@rm999
The difference is that you DON'T have to have it down your throat. You have options as to what stuff to see on your newsfeed. Even if its stuff that you like to see but one person is abusing it (lets say you like status comments but one person changes his status everytime the air blows on his face) you can make it so that facebook won't show you that much crap form only THAT person but everyone else is good.
I love what facebook is doing. They have all these features but they're not forcing anyone to swallow them. You do have an option to uncheck stuff you don't like (well mainly referring to the newsfeed i guess, if you don't like the newsfeed at all than you're screwed lol) - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Facebook is definitely > myspace but I don't know about facebook video. I mean what makes myspace suck so much is 90% of them are filled with tacky videos and music and horrible design standards.
As long as facebook stays neatly designed and it doesn't get too tacky im all for it but I don't want facebook just becoming another myspace. - drewtown, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I don't think those are even in the same category, Youtube (flash based), Joost (Desktop based TV).
- pyrotix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Facebook is the #5 website in Canada by traffic
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8More like, "MySpace is great for burning a hole in your eyes."
- redlemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8good thing my employer doesnt go to my school.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7YouTube beware? That was a joke, right?
- DesuKN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This is their YouTube killer?
What are they hoping it dies of? Old age? - Daunting, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm finding facebook Platform and its subsequent additions to be enlightening. It has an open source feel to it where myspace monumentally crumbles. If you don't like the additions you can very well just turn all of your news feed settings off (Or pick the ones you don't want) and alternatively pick the ones that you don't want other people to see. You can pretty much be alone on facebook if you want to which is hard to say about myspace. One week on myspace and you already have 20 friend requests from bot accounts with big breasted women on them.
- kuhlmeye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Plus the idea of being able to send PRIVATE video messages to other people is quite possibly the best idea the Facebook team has come up with. Everyone on facebook should start getting ready for (extremely) obscene videos to hit their inboxes!!!
- Canute, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"Facebook Video allows you to tag videos with your friends’ names, meaning you can explore all the clips of one particular friend."
If I understand correctly, it seems like Facebook is only trying to cover a very small portion of youtube's marked. I would not be concerned about "Facebook Video" taking over for youtube. - arhseven, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Next up - HTML will puke all over Facebook. Welcome to Facespace.
- Flanker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Honestly. Some people need to stop drinking the Kool Aid.
- KB3JUV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4HerrEisenheim: Do you realize that violates every law in the book? Haven't you ever seen all of the fights that private companies have with the Federal and state governments over privacy concerns (latest was sex offender data from MySpace). And you think Facebook is just going to turn over "temporary passwords" to private companies for the hell of it?!?
Thumbs down. - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The big difference would be Joost not having user uploaded content so it doesn't run the risk of infringement.
- giveer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@tjex
Maybe they're just trying to help you with your spelling. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6esoteric...OF COURSE it is getting more hits than Digg. You do realize that over 99% of people have never HEARD of Digg, let alone ever visited it. Let alone visits it regularly. Digg is also plumetting while he others are increasing.
But to those blasting versionist...I assume you will also blast all the idiot Digg children who say "People still use MySpace?" in EVERY submission about MySpace. - esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@ hdtvdust
Who says i love myspace?
I just thought that Digg would be more popular than facebook (which it was) and maybe even close to myspace.
you know,
When you assume you make an ass out of u and me. - BenPresland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Get your cheque book out, google.
- rm999, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10lo0ol
For some people, it means not having that stuff crammed down your throat. Now, when I log into facebook, there are 20 listings of things I don't care about:
"Bob is selling a desk"
"Lisa changed her relationship status"
"Tim posted pictures of Alice - not that you even know who she is"
Next week I'm going to have to deal with a youtube clone crammed down my throat too? Facebook reminds me of a dotcom bubble business - they try to expand so fast they forget what they were originally created for. - wenis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3great now i can have the same 20 videos ive seen over the past 5 years forwarded to me on a different "social networking site" that i moved to, to get away from that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Some do. But let's not act like it s a big percetnage of employers that are doing this. Every time there is an article about oneperson getting hurt by their FAcebook, or MySpace profile, they act like this is common.
It is not. It is a very small percentage of emplyers doing this. And even this small percent that do are not worried about finding drunken frat party pics. They are looking for serious things. - dstjohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can change your layout now. You can drag the different items around to where you want them.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Providing embeddable links violate the privacy settings. Won't they?
- DevlinD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1An interesting move by Facebook, but all in all I don't think that YouTube has anything to worry about. It appears that they are just adding the feature as a convenience for their own users and are not looking to monetize the video traffic. Basically video is just there for the same reason that they allow you to post pictures. It will be interesting to see if they eventually do add an embeddable player though.
- KevinJim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The only truly rival of youtube could be thepiratebay.org when it'll be up and running.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0***** facebook
- craven320, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I used to be a myspace addict, I was on every day. Myspace really went to hell. I still like it for music, but I think that alot of people's personal pages are appalling. That's why I love that facebook doesn't let you change how you page looks, you're stuck with their layout and colours.
And while yes, alot of people one facebook are just drunken party fanatics, I have really enjoyed looking up a few old high school friends and seeing what they've been up to.
Sure, sometimes all the updates are annoying, but I do enjoy seeing what my friends are up to, especially if they post a note/video/link/join a group/are attending an event that I didn't know about and am interested in.
I don't know why everyone hates their new layout... you used to have to click 3 or 4 links to get to stuff, now just about everything is on the homepage, one click.
I remember when it was still college and uni only, I didn't want them to open it up. Now I'm glad they did cause of all the people I've found. - raysidwell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I don't agree with you bradmoreland on this one. Facebook's demographic is changing rapidly, at least here in Europe, and its becoming a cross-corporate platform for urban dwellers. There was an interesting article in thelondonnews on Thursday in which a law firm blocked facebook from its employees. It had to reinstate it not so much because the employees protested, but because their CLIENTS protested. It is no longer the domain of the college set - though I am not sure of the break down. It is becoming the social-network of choice among the twenty-something who have left school, and Iowa, and want to retain their social-networks. These networks include friends and professional contacts. They are getting jobs and pay checks and positions and this is the understood trajectory that has media companies drooling at the bit. Facebooks limited and managed distribution network is a perfect way to monetize because it is traceable and if we want to see media companies contributing their content for free, then participation will need to be doled out the backend from advertising revenues. At present, if you haven't heard, the only monetiztion at youtube is that which goes into google's pocket. Enter Viacom and the world awaits...
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -3/+3having a facebook account is a liability. Employers now check your facebook profile before hiring you.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Government employers can do so without question. Regular employers have to submit a form, although I've never heard of them being denied. They are given an account with a temporary password that lets them view the profile they want to view.
- filmbandit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0yeah where is social network 2.0? Nobody has done it yet. Ning is interesting but a long, long way from even being halfway cooked.
- codyfrisch, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Widget based system, oddly sounds right considering the Senior Platform Manager came over from Apple...
- SmashSource, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3There are some major mistakes that Mashables made on this post. Rule of thumb just check the official site.
Here are the facts:
