- CaptHappyPants, on 11/26/2007, -7/+35If you think this one's bad, wait till they finish rolling out the "Microstatus" feature next month... yeesh...
http://pttbt.ca/2007/11/25/facebook-microstatus-fe ... - rudy23, on 11/26/2007, -1/+25which gives us the Number 1 reason why facebook will fail. they dont give a flying fk about their users. using cheap tricks like the 20 sec opt out window is akin to tricking end users. such tricks wont get you far in life. learn from google and sell your product based on features and real world application instead of vaporware.
- reeder, on 11/26/2007, -0/+18I am tired of being thought of as a consumer, instead of a ***** human being. Humanity is *****.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 11/26/2007, -1/+17Facebook is for checking out the pictures of hot people you never talk to, not for marketing purposes! When will they learn...
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+15I'm not usually one to take the anti-facebook position when these kinds of articles make front page, but this is actually pretty bad... I thought the beacons were going to be used to publish information relevant to my friends, not to advertise how I'm spending my money. I do have confidence that Facebook will make a change though, they usually do when there is enough of a backlash.
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -3/+17$?
- computergod, on 11/26/2007, -1/+12You will when your friends get a notification saying "martian just bought a 10" dong from gaysextoys.com, click here for a 10% discount!"
- allaboutdatiki, on 11/26/2007, -3/+12WTF was Facebook thinking?
- jkizzle, on 11/26/2007, -1/+9you are a fool. any attempt at sarcasm was poor.
- troydoogle7, on 11/26/2007, -3/+11they are seriously idiots.. its almost as though they are trying to ruin the good thing they have going!
- sixtyton, on 11/26/2007, -2/+10there is actually a facebook group set up just for this
- computergod, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8Add this to Adblock:
http://facebook.com/beacon/*
Done! - bjs3171, on 11/26/2007, -0/+7why would facebook show people what you did on a completely unrelated site? what does overstock have to with facebook in anyway that they'd publicize that information, and why would other users care?
- wcommons, on 11/26/2007, -0/+6You just can't "assume consent." It's illogical and most likely not a valid legal process. Any lawyers out there that can comment?
- sn0wmis3r, on 11/26/2007, -3/+9Why do people even use facebook?
- spudmanster, on 11/26/2007, -5/+10WTF do the idiots who post all their private information on a website think its going to be used for?
- mghwom1, on 11/26/2007, -2/+7I miss the old Facebook. Ya know...the one that was just college students.
- maliath, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6In an academic environment it's a quick and easy way to setup a group for a class that isn't through the institution. Students can communicate individually with each other, post things relevant to the entire group, and share information without professors and other faculty having automatic access.
- computergod, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6You don't have the option, it does this automatically, unless you click this thing that pops up and disappears after 15 seconds.
- somerandomnerd, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Believe it or not, that's actually *not* an option.
- web2pointYo, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Don't listen to any of this Mark. You hang in there buddy. You've caught lightning in a bottle and theres no reason to think this ride will ever end.
-Friendster - scottique, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5I've started avoiding Facebook for everything except the Scrabble application. There is a certain level of detail that I don't need published to the mouth-breathers in my tenth-grade math class.
- castlecraver, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4The worst part about this is that you can't opt-out of the external site functionality altogether. You have to block individual sites, one-by-one, after they try to post stories to your profile.
They can implement whatever stupid privacy-violating crap they'd like, so long as they let me opt-out of it before it becomes an issue, and remain out of it permanently. They seem to have been able to handle the concerns with the news feed application everyone complained about, but this incremental step towards complete degradation of users' privacy has got to be particularly attractive to their bottom line.
You'll get the same load of boilerplate crap about commitment to privacy and user control if you email them (I did), but really... is Facebook so different from BonzaiBuddy and the ilk now? "We whore out the stuff you'd rather keep private, but we call it 'functionality'" - Wronghead, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Wow... I'll try it.
If this really works, you are like.. some sort of friggin genius. =P - shiftless, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4That's ridiculous information to show. What if you're getting someone a present? I'm sure there's larger problems than that. Overall, I find it to be a gross idea.
This could mess up a lot of people and just cause unwanted trouble. - computergod, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Guess I should include instructions:
If you don't already have Adblock Plus installed then go here:
http://adblockplus.org/en/installation
Hit CRTL + SHIFT + A, the Adblock configuration window will open.
Click "Add Filter" There are two places to click this, the button or the input line, they both do the same thing.
Paste http://facebook.com/beacon/* into the input line.
Click Ok.
Done. - MiDri, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Exactly! Remember that hot girl you meet at the club? What was her name ashley? alicia? kelly? *****... Wait, She went to Berkly and has a friend name Beth! FACEBOOK!
- kaniz, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Facebook assumes that your friends in your network care about every little thing that you do. Sadly, I don't think this is too far from the truth.
Facebook assumes that your friends are interested in what you buy. "Hey, my friend just saw X movie, I'll ask him about it to see if it was any good"
Facebook knows that they can profit from this.
Judging by how many friends I have that are face-book obsessed, and update /every/ detail of their life on there, and respond to the updates of people in their network of friends. I would venture a guess that the above two assumptions are correct for a fairly large portion of "heavy" facebook users. - FutureEng, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Godwin's law!
- wild, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4Correct me if I am wrong, but that only blocks what I see. This is about what my friends see.
- Bridea, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Here's an idea: Don't become a "fan" of a particular retail site and you don't have to worry about this *****.
- HomerS1, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Follow the $$. Vendor pays $$ to facebook for posting subtle advertising.
- computergod, on 11/26/2007, -2/+5It seem to have replaced email for a large (stupid) portion of people. It has become a necessity. Personally, I'm ust hoping dor a simple daemon program that will convert to and from facebook to POP3, it has been done before.
- martian, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4Suggestion for all facebook users who find this upsetting: Delete your account.
- topapito, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3Facebook, Myspace, to me are just a way for people to know a little too much about you. I opened a facebook account to view someone else's facebook pictures. In a matter of weeks I was getting invitations from people I had not heard from in years. There is a reason why I stayed away from them in the first place. I am not so lonely that I need to be available to every tom dick and harry on the internet. ***** facebook, shut down my account and good riddance. Unbelievable how we gripe about privacy issues yet are so willing to plaster our faces on a worldwide bulletin board for all to see. Too many lonely people in this world.
- Nath4n, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3"Mike Mayer, for instance, saw a feed item saying his boyfriend, Adam Sofen, just bought tickets to "No Country For Old Men" from movie-ticket vendor Fandango.
"What if I was seeing 'Fred Claus'?" said Sofen, 28. "That would have been much more embarrassing. At least this was a prestigious movie.""
LOL - bffoley, on 11/26/2007, -0/+3It always cracks me up when the MSM runs "The people who run Facebook are so smart" stories. The company is overvalued based on how much money companies like Yahoo or Google or whoever want to throw at it so they can own a "Web 2.0 social community". If Facebook continues doing stuff that pisses off their community then people are going to jump ship like they've been doing to MySpace this year, and the company will go under. Zuckerberg should sell while people still think this site's worth $15 billion
- computergod, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2They pay facebook for the referrals.
- wstrucke, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2isn't that what happens to everything profitable eventually?
i mean, look at star trek... - computergod, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2Oops, sorry for raining on your troll against facebook users.
- tidu, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3actually I think the layout is pretty damn well-made, considering rivals' layouts.
- martian, on 11/26/2007, -2/+4You DO have the option. DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT.
- xike, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1The day I realized social networks are a waste of time, my life got substantially better. Yep, I don't do facebook anymore and instead hang out on digg and reddit. Wait, what?
- victrola, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Opt in is better.
- matt.rubin, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1yeah i was just told by my friend "Why did you buy a dick in a box shirt on busted tees?" I was like how did you find out it was a presnet for a friend. Then Some how i have no idea how it was on my wall i bought a dick in a box t-shirt from busted tees.
- shampoovta, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1myspace will do it to if they think it works.
- CedEx, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1To look up people you used to know to find out what they've been doing with their lives over the past 10 years secretly. It sure beats accidentally running into them and faking the "It's so good to see you, let's hook up for coffee one day to catch up..."
- bjornski, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Coming soon to Digg.
- shampoovta, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1Facebook, if it sounds to good to be true,...it is.
Myspace, better the devil you know than the one you don't. -
