- TwistyMcFister, on 05/26/2009, -4/+19In Soviet Russia, investment takes $200 million from The Facebook
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -3/+18I cannot BELIEVE that idiots are STILL reporting that Microsoft's deal put a $15 billion valuation on Facebook. MOST of the money
Microsoft paid was for the renewal of their search exclusivity deal.
It is just unbelieveable that websites that are supposedly knowledgeable in tech and internet subjects STILL are reporting that absolute *****.
At NO point did anyuone in the world think that Facebook was worth $15 billion. - Eurynom0s, on 05/26/2009, -0/+12But Ze German, he has such good Bier.
- CoD4, on 05/26/2009, -0/+11Enemy uav airborne?
- bigteebo, on 05/26/2009, -2/+11Is this real money or that Internet fame money from South park?
- strictnein, on 05/26/2009, -2/+11I like this part in your post:
That was powerful stuff right there. - screwy3333, on 05/26/2009, -0/+9The valuation comes from the immense amount of data which can be mined and then sold to any firm that needs to know the direction of general consumer opinion

- hawkdude56, on 05/26/2009, -0/+8Pretty interesting to see the valuation fluctuate with different investments.
- doshindude, on 05/26/2009, -7/+15Ingenious, Facebook just gave all of our information to Russia....We're *****.

- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4Except that Microsoft did not PAY that money for the Facebook stock. They paid that money for the renewal of their advertising deal, plsu some stock.
If I offered you $50 to borrow your car for the weekend, and then noticed a pack of gum in the center console and asked you for a piece, am I valuing that piece of gum at $50? Of course not. Just as Microsoft considered most of that $240 million they paid to be for advertising exclusivity. (probably AT LEAST as much as $200 million was considered advertising, and less than $40 million was for the stock.)
Otherwise, you are claiming that Microsoft got the steal of the century by getting a FREE exclusivity deal for advertising on Facebook.
Microsoft paid less for advertising exclusivity plus the small percentage of stock than Google paid MySpace for advertising alone. Does that make MySpace's value infinity? After all, they paid MySpace $900 million and got zero shares. - rmxz, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4Facebook has *direct* value to an investment group. This might be more than just an investment, but
"...investment from Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian investment group..."
Imagine the value of just the huge database of personal details and networks of people who know each other. If sold to a vestment group in a country with different privacy laws, a facebook-like-network be of incredible value to mine for data like "hmm... there's increased chatter between facebook profiles suspected of being execs in these 2 high-tech companies -- time to get our investment arm to consider that they might be partnering or merging?" - Phocion55, on 05/26/2009, -1/+5Drago, most likely.
- BowlingStone, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4This article needs to be proof-read something fierce.
- Briones07, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4I don't care what it takes, what it costs! Call 'The Russian'!

- kkiran, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Exactly! In India you can buy an entire album (average case) for less than Rs.150 == $3 !!
- Dasliberdan, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Agreed, many VC firms even in this ***** economy value large databases at $25 - $150 a member depending on the ROI. This is why sites like Digg that historically don't do that well with advertising can raise huge amounts of investment funds!
- LordRedSnake, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Yeah it better be for data (not for the users sake, but for Facebook's sake) because they sure haven't made a profit selling ads yet.
- shutaro, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Someone's gonna get their legs broke...
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -2/+4revenue is not profit.

- andywatts, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3The 10B valuation is for preferred stock.
Without knowing the preferences, it's meaningless.
The 6M valuation for common stock is the actual value of facebook. - bjornski, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2It'll sure make their bot-nets more effective.
If you have a Facebook account, expect a LOT more spam. - bjornski, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2You won't be getting friend invites, you'll be getting marriage proposals from mail-order brides.
