- Popdmb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+169Dugg for anything being anti-myspace.
- Popdmb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+97It's all fun and games until someone develops a glitter font extension...
- mrhahn, on 10/11/2007, -5/+45Developers, developers, developers, developers...
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+38With glitter mouse trails! And falling hearts! And flashing pink-plad backgrounds!
Let's hope not. - slugicide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Last.fm has been promising facebook integration for a (couple) weeks. I can't ***** wait.
- wangl3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31The average myspace page is a horrible orgy of seizure-inducing background colors and gifs that exists for the sole purpose of making sure you never come back again.
- eean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26It is actually true, in volume of images. Probably because the ability to tag your friends in photos is such a killer feature.
I look forward to a tightly integrated Flickr application! Facebook Photos sucks since the resolution is so limited. - mrjeffery, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22I wasnt keen on social networking sites until i found facebook.

:) - kronix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I think this is what makes facebook so great. The fact that they cater to everyone including the nerds. From a computer science perspective, particularly in the area of information storage and retrieval, facebook is very interesting. I like the idea that Facebook is actually winning because of actual networking. Not because users can post stupid animated gifs and music. I can actually use facebook to see how my friends from all different periods in my life are doing and what they're up to. Especially after college, I can see pictures from friends all over the world every day.
My space was a good idea but it falls short of what social networking can actually be. - specb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15We're pushing this out tonight. Stay tuned.
- SecularG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12People are getting tired of MySpace making dumb decisions that hampers the users. Facebook is just capitalizing on MySpace's mistakes. Good thing Facebook didn't sell. They will be making much more money in the future.
- sobpanic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14still deciding whether this is good news or not. see the developer terms of service. free now, pay later?
Section 3. Fees

If we do charge a fee for using the Facebook Platform or any feature thereof you do not have any obligation to continue to use the Facebook Platform or the applicable feature. However, if you do: (i) we reserve the right to specify the manner in which the fee will be calculated, the terms on which you will be invoiced and charged and the terms of payment; and (ii) any and all fees payable by you pursuant to this Agreement are expressed exclusive of all taxes and duties, including Value Added Tax ("VAT") or any similar applicable sales tax. In addition to such fees payable, you will pay any sales, use, value-added or import taxes, customs duties or similar taxes that may be assessed by any state and/or jurisdiction (collectively, "Taxes") that Facebook is legally required to charge on the applicable fees under this Agreement. If requested to do so by Facebook, or as otherwise required by applicable law, you will supply your VAT identification number to Facebook. - davidburns, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11The fundamental difference between Facebook and MySpace is that Facebook relationships are primarily built around those in real life due to the nature of the networks you're associated with... in the end, it IS human interaction and communication with people you're close to.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11This is huge! Just yesterday I stumbled on to the developers part of Facebook and wondered why they weren't giving these 3rd party apps more promotion, but it seems it was in the works all along.
- slimasian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Is anyone else amazed at how well engineered Facebook is? I always knew the LAMP stack was scalable, but Facebook is really proving its worth -- 100,000 users a week? Re-donkulous!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12lawl
you need to get out more if you're exited about *this* of all things. - 25thhour, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Not selling up sure was a GOOD move. Looks like the skys the limit for these guys at the moment
- crashingechelon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The nice thing about Facebook is everything is unified and fits. Not like myspace when some users page makes me want to stab my eyes out.
- skinturtle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Face book is the only social network I have joined (I'm suspecting thats probably the case with a lot of users). It's clean looking, fast..and easy to use.
One thing I hope they don't do is allow people to customize the look of their profiles too much. That is one thing that annoys me about MySpace. People put all these graphics on their sites which slows the page processing. I have highspeed and it still annoys me.
Keeping it simple, elegant, fast and sweet is what sets Facebook apart from the rest. - eean, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Well whatever. Facebook is spam free. I'm glad that they do what they have to do.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"Allow me to geek out and share some photo infrastructure statistics with
you. We have:
* 1.7 billion user photos
* 2.2 billion friends tagged in user photos
* 160 terabytes of photo storage used with an extra 60 terabytes available
* 60+ million photos added each week which take up 5 terabytes of disk space
* 3+ billion photo images served to users every day
* 100,000+ images served per second during our peak traffic windows"
From their blog post: http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=2406207130 - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+5I'm an anti-MySpace Australian and wouldn't mind something like Facebook catching on so I could use it as an alternative. Maybe, I'm just worried it'll be the new MySpace..
- johnnykwest, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6"It's tough for anyone who isn't a college student to understand just how important Facebook is to us on a day-to-day basis"
Important? Really? I can understand 'fun', 'useful', but important? Please explain. Seriously. - specb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3it's 100,000+ a day, actually, and that's a conservative number
- dementia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Of course they are adding these features right in the middle of finals week. I'm getting a site maintenance error right now and can't log in. I need my Facebook!!
Even worse, as soon as I really need to start studying I'll just be playing with new features
It's tough for anyone who isn't a college student to understand just how important Facebook is to us on a day-to-day basis - farther, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Agreed. It is exactly this, the encouragement of wrist-slashing emo douches to attempt something artistic, that has made MySpace the absolutely horrifying visual ***** it currently is. A wellspring of teenage angst does not a graphic designer make!
- Slagar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@nerd05
Advertising is how sites like facebook fund themselves, hell, advertising is pretty much what drives the internet and a good chunk of the non-virtual world as well. You're the one that needs a reality check. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2>.<
The Digg one that shows my recently dugg stories on my profile doesn't work, the only one so far that hasn't out of the ones I've added.
Digg want to get on fixing this? - kertong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@johnnykwest:
To some people, 'fun' is an important thing to have in one's life. - asmitty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Note that your Facebook homepage now lists the links at the left as "Applications" and you can edit your list, move the order, and there's a link on the edit page to 'Browse Applications'
- pawas01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Facebook rocks, ONe will be a fool not using facebook.
http://www.columbiashoes.us - LavaHot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Deliver us from MySpace hell my Facebook gods!
- joerick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2When I first saw this I was very excited. What surprised me when I went over there to check it out was the freedom that Facebook is giving to its users...
It slightly worried me in fact. I added a widget (satirically named 'My Space') that allowed me to enter whatever markup I want. Facebook have created a markup that allows most basic HTML elements, sans Javascript and auto-play swfs. However, I can stick an iframe in there and load whatever page I like....
We'll have to see how Facebook plays this one. Clearly an open platform requires (and thrives off) a good amount of freedom, but there's a reason I closed my myspace account. - wesl56, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2badass! cant wait to see what some people can do with this
- jmholloway, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1they've made a digg widget if thats what you are referring to. It doesn't work right now though. Search for 'digg' under /apps at facebook
- eean, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Well I think there's an important difference with MySpace. MySpace encourages users to change the colors, add backgrounds, add music that plays by default etc. Having an app that lets you do these things doesn't mean anyone is going to use it.
One can hope... - JasonMaloney101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2There is a good reason Myspace will never offer anything like this: It would be gobbled up so fast by phishers and other mal-intented individuals that Myspace would need to be shut down altogether to stop the mayhem its ignorant users would get themselves into.
That said, I still use it on a daily basis =/ - mwolfzorn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3100,000 users a week?
I think Facebook gets a lot more hits than that. I am a 3rd year student at Ohio State and everyone I know checks Facebook several times everyday... - specb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can't load an iframe into the profile, only the canvas page. Still, the user then must opt to install that app, and even then, only they would see whats on that canvas page. Profiles are protected pretty well.
- crashrox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think they have something like 200 memcache instances as well.
- slimasian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Great move on Facebook's part, partially opening up the system to an extent to developers. With the amount of demographic data they have, there's so many possibilities for really cool applications. That game idea that Red Bull implemented is pretty wicked (challenge a person, your rank based on geographical location, etc.).
I just remember how much time students at my university spent surfing the Internet (and Facebook in particular)...if one has a killer app idea, they'd grab the 18-25 demographic by the balls. In all, a good move, in my opinion - Butterbean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1note that it says digg in the developers list. maybe kevin's new project? who knows.
- johnnykwest, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1@kertong
If he needs Facebook to have fun at college, then he's going to the wrong one. ;) - andshewas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I just hate the name "facebook." I just can't help but see a book with this giant fat guy face plastered on the front of it.
- SilkSteel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0"Facebook for phones - coming to an iPhone near you!"
- airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2This is such a small world. The screenshot of the dude's profile a little down in that article is from my university, and his girlfriend in the photo is a co-worker of mine at the computer labs.
This should not happen! =0 The Internet needs more people!! - rainergamer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0check the movie "anti-trust"
no particular relevance...YET! - otep, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1
