- thehumancow, on 10/11/2007, -22/+240Nobody's making you add applications. If your friends adding applications really bothers you that much, take a step back and reexamine how closely you relate with facebook. It's just a webpage. If the notifications bother you, go to your privacy settings and tell it not to share any information of yours with the facebook API. It's not complicated, and people are making a huge deal out of nothing.
This was the same reaction that arose as when the wall changed from an anonymous wall to the current style, and then again when the layout changed - and facebook is still around and perfectly functional. Chill. - archistudent, on 10/11/2007, -19/+203Hmm, agreed. This site has changed so much in the year and a half I've had an account. I used to just log in to check up with people I don't see at least once a week in person. But now the applications have gone overboard. And will people please stop poking me? Especially guys. Doesn't seem right...
- djhworld, on 10/11/2007, -8/+143The new applications are annoying, I admit.
But the fact still remains, facebook is miles better then myspace, in terms of design, usability and user-base. - dheaddy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+102If you find the current Facebook layout too complicated and cluttered don't sign up for Myspace, you'll probably have a seizure.
- vypergts, on 10/11/2007, -3/+85"There’s little colored icons everywhere…"
Has this guy looked at his own blog lately? - simplenation, on 10/11/2007, -7/+59nobody pokes me :(
- noch, on 10/11/2007, -11/+45Oh goodness . . . here we go again.
Everyone freaked out when FB opened up to high schoolers. Everyone freaked out when they opened it up to the public.Everyone freaked out when they added mini-feeds. Why are people constantly freaking out? Because we are naturally pessimistic to new things? Why blame FB for trying to stay innovative? Any successful company expands itself and thats what FB has been doing. Ive been an avid FB user since the inception and its been a pretty nice thing, especially compared to the raunchy HTML layout of myspace. Give it a break guys. - UoMDeacon, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36The thing is, you can't get "super-poked" unless you went ahead and installed the application yourself. Anything new that loads up for you on your own page is your own fault.
- shehnshah, on 10/11/2007, -9/+38the new applications are just too much. its just like anythign else, there is such a choice overload that you dont know what to choose! a wide range to choose from is a good thing, but TOO MUCH is .. well TOO MUCH!
- NiX0n, on 10/11/2007, -12/+41Quit your bitching people! If you want simplicity, go use Google Groups. There, I said it.
- OneManArmy, on 10/11/2007, -12/+39I agree that things like pokes are completely useless but "How is this site so popular?," give me a break. Through facebook I was able to get back in touch with a couple of friends that I literally didn't see/hear of since 10 years, and that is why facebook kicks so much ass. oh and btw, facebook is probably one of the fastest sites I have ever came to use.
- M2Ys4U, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24After I joined the "Enough with the poking, let's just have sex" group everyone stopped poking me =(
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30yeah. the applications are making me nervous that facebook will turn into myspace. every profile will have an annoying song, the pages will take forever to load, people will start embedding countless youtube videos. I hate that there's a top friends application, too. It's turning into myspace.
- evasive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25Let's keep crying and bitching about social networking sites. Seriously, when is digg going to get over such non-issues. If Facebook or Myspace piss you off, don't use it. Yeah, that's some really in-depth analysis you posted; three ***** paragraphs. You're really setting the world on fire.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21I wouldn't mind if people could change the *color scheme* of their profiles. As long as those color schemes are chosen by Facebook and not lime green on bright pink.
- nobody554, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20It really is...And I'm just about to the point where if Facebook allows you to change the color of your profile in any way, I'm out.
I'll quit right then and there. - greatkingrat85, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18If you have people on your friends list who enjoy using crap like SuperPoke, then you shouldn't really be friends with them.
It's like those people you know who forward chain mail. - Valleye, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19You seem like some elitest 13 year old geek. Grow a life.
90% (number comes from my bum) of facebook users cannot write HTML and will not EVER need to write HTML code. I can but why should my Dental Hygienist, elementary school friend who just found me need too? - wicketr, on 10/11/2007, -18/+34Facebook went down the tubes when High Schoolers were allowed to sign up.
- justineatworld, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Why do people ignore the brilliant "minimize" logo on EVERY SINGLE BOX. Don't like an application? Just minimize it and it won't appear on any of your friends' pages as anything more than a 10px tall box until you expand it again
- skelbagz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17What a rubbish story. If it's too complicated I suggest you move in with an Amish family.
- mt066, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13There will always be the "____ used to be SOOOO much better" jerks. It happens with any website, TV show, band, whatever. What sucks about facebook is instead of some fairly intangible change, for example digg's expanding user base (it used to be so much better before, right?), facebook is actually changing a whole bunch, which gives these people more validation in their bitching.
- awesomename, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12The reality is that the applications aren't annoying...it's my friends that are annoyings. To any of my friends reading this: STOP GODDAMN ASKING ME TO INSTALL FACEBOOK APPS. Thank you.
- mt066, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11You don't have to do all that stuff. Half of my news feed thing is "Carl added the mega-friendwhatever application" or "Sara supports bats in their natural habitat." You can still just gloss over it and keep doing what you used to do on facebook (stalking).
- Courthead, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15If you think Facebook is anywhere near MySpace, you have no idea what you're talking about. First and foremost, the layout of Facebook hasn't changed. The News Feed? User profile pages? Photos? Messaging? Everything is still in the same place, with the same clean/organized design, and the same basic functionality.
Yeah, people can add applications to customize their pages. So what? Having applications isn't what makes MySpace bad... it's the complete lack of organization, uniformity, and overall usability of the site. On Facebook, the pages are still organized in the EXACT same way. The background is white, not some annoying picture on repeat. The text is uniform and readable. If you want to find something, you know exactly where it is. You don't have to worry about music blaring when a page loads. The amount of spam and fake accounts you have to deal with is 1/100th of what you see on MySpace, if that. What the hell is wrong with you people?
And for the love of god, if you don't like an app, DON'T GET IT. If it really bothers you that you aren't on someone else's top friends list and that's why you hate Facebook (or any other social network for that matter), then you aren't mature enough to be using the internet anyway. - ArraySun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Are you kidding me? Facebook is much more aesthetically pleasing than MySpace (which, by the way, is indeed coded by a "bunch of monkeys"); applications are not mandatory, and you can keep it streamlined/clutter free by simply not installing any of them, if that's what you want.
Plus, when you compare Facebook to a few other social networks, you'll find that Facebook is superior in quality than those aforementioned. - profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12It IS getting complicated - needlessly. You know why high school kids like it while college students and adults don't? Because adults are less likely to say "oo shiny" and add every single useless application out there. That said, it's still one of the cleanest, fastest, most usable sites on the Web. And like thehumancow says below, nobody's making you add applications, and pretty much everything about Facebook is adjustable and/or optional.
- jhandfield, on 10/11/2007, -11/+21Ever since the Facebook API was made available, the site has been in decline, IMO. Ask ten random people on Facebook what they think about Myspace and typically you'll get horrific looks from five of them about how evil Myspace is and that only stalkers use it, and the rest are usually Myspace refugees.
So then the API comes along, and what do we have now? MyFacebookSpace. I noted with dismay that a few days after it became available we had a Top Friends application (for the uninitiated, Myspace by default allows you to show your "top" 8 friends on your profile page, though the number can be changed from I believe 0 to 32. It is primarily a space to highlight who you think is the hottest spammer account that added you, and a prime source for iDrama) which currently has 6.77 MILLION users (the Slide, Inc version of the application.) The "You've won a free iPod! (participation / rights to your firstborn required)" scams have made their way over to the site now as well, along with any number of other somewhat-annoying (to me) applications (I thought HotOrNot.com died out a few years ago...)
While yes, you can choose to ignore the applications, not use them yourself, stop using the site, whatever, I do weep for the decline of the simple, clean and efficient interface Facebook used to have. While the applications are user-created, and in no way indicative of the quality of the core Facebook site, the low standards of quality with some / many of these applications is hard to ignore. - Snorglorf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10With Facebook, you can hit the little "X" in the corner of each application to close them though. Pretty nice.
- Snorglorf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Yeah, and make this Application also automatically send out an application invite to everyone on Facebook, so they know what they're missing!
- norick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9But... Michael Jackson is a pervert, Lindsay is a whore, and for now the PS3 sucks...
- meechwings, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Because those were the benefits of Facebook over MySpace. You knew the chances of getting spammed were low because only people with .edu addresses could sign up. The interface was simple and uncluttered, and it wasn't a coding horror.
Opening it to everyone and the rise of applications threaten these benefits. I'm already starting to see Facebook pages cluttered with applications, some of which seem to hastily written, some of which border on MySpace gaudiness, and others which have already been done (seriously, do you really need 3 different applications to poke someone?).
Facebook is still infinitely better than MySpace with the changes, and I'm not freaking out about them, but I definitely understand where people are coming from. - xanji, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14I beg to differ. Those invitations to add the same applications that your friends have added are the new chain letters of social media sites.
I can't blame Facebook though. It's just doing it's job to get bigger and better then to eventually plummet in its popularity as a new social media site takes over.
The finger goes to my friends for constantly inviting me. How many times do I have to friggin say that I don't want a stupid fortune cookie on my profile?!
Make an application to block application invites...now that's one I'll add! - mhockey14221, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I feel this is like the news-feed when it broke -- people will hate it now but in a few months it'll become quite normal and even somewhat useful.
- UoMDeacon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You can disable notifications to those invites from your Notifications page. Not that difficult.
- clarient, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14Facebook IS a social networking site, after all. What did you expect? They're adding functionality to make it MORE social. Surprise! If you don't like it - delete your account, and let the internets move along without you.
- Janus67, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I was super-poked then asked to install the software.
- norick, on 10/11/2007, -36/+42FaceBook will become MySpace sooner that you think.
- CrasyMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yeah, you're right. I prefer to use teh dictionary.
- CrasyMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6If I made applications, I would name them UBERSUPER_____
Then people would add it more. Am I right? - Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6***** man. Blame your mates. If they're retarded enough to "super poke" (never even come across this) then that's the problem.
If you don't like apps, turn off all but the most basic notifications, don't use the apps and minimize them when on a friend's page. - Amackera, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's true, most of the applications suck right now - but at least there's potential. People could come up with some really cool stuff, just give them some time.
- antoniojvr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It has begun...
- CrasyMike, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Is this a kid that looked up HTML and CSS on Google and has automatically assumed that now they can make Facebook?
Go Wikipedia some more stuff buddy. - justineatworld, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I remember those days too. and the comments people left then were at a similar level of intellect to those left on youtube.
- pissflaps, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I'm severely disappointed with the ***** that the applications do to a person's page. I simply want to leave a comment to ask friends if they want to get together on the weekend, and I have LITERALLY scrolled through four complete pages of "GRAFFITI" and "I SUPPORT ______ FOR PRESIDENT'S FAVORITE SOUP!" It's embarassing to think some these people attend[ed] prestigious academies.
- nobody554, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9True, but when I get 15 invites for the same program from 15 different people who think that this is an awesome app that everybody should have and invites their entire friendlist several times a week....something's gotta change.
- ashwinashwin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7maybe thats true but its still a hell of a lot better than myspace. you can tell that a bunch of monkeys are programming at myspace. at least the facebookers act like they kind of know what they're doing.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4plus those "distracting icons" have been there forever. i'm pretty sure those were part of the original news feed. and if he only logs into facebook once every 3-4 months, then he's not the kind of user they should worry about anyway.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Oh, no! Too much socialising on the social networks!
