- GodAImighty, on 04/29/2009, -2/+95Remember when the internet was about how to not let other people know what you were up to?
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -1/+48Because Zuckerberg is a paranoid pussy.
- lnxfi, on 04/29/2009, -1/+40I was going to have a ham sandwich today, but I decided to have a PB&J instead. I regret it a little, but there's always tomorrow.
- bfogarty27, on 04/29/2009, -16/+52twitter is just the dumbest thing in the world
- ThePerkins, on 04/29/2009, -1/+36I'm still awaiting the hybrid Twit-face.
- lepetitmousse, on 04/29/2009, -2/+30except that facebook is already far bigger than twitter?
- RatatRatR, on 04/29/2009, -0/+24And your dilemma is actually more interesting to me than power struggles between Facebook and Twitter.
- breakerjump, on 04/29/2009, -4/+27FTA: "And if you look at Twitter today, it has clearly changed the way the world consumes news."
How in hell has Twitter had any impact on the way the "world" consumes news? What a cockamamie statement, to go along with a cockamamie article. Twitter has had absolutely no impact on the way the "world" consumes news - the internet and 24/7 news cycle have.
Anyway, one thing I just cannot get over about Twitter is this: Twitter is merely a replication of functionality already built in to Facebook. Can you "@" people? Can you post pictures and links? Sure, but media sharing is just some strange layer plopped on top of Twitter, which makes it obvious the functionality isn't embedded, and every other feature or action on Twitter requires some strange typing/otherwise convention to get right. When you then take in to account holdout MySpace users are just now finally beginning to come over to Facebook after a year or two of "this is too complicated for me", soley because that's where their network IS now, I just don't see how Twitter is sustainable, valuable or even worthwhile.
Why would I get a Twitter account when I like the privacy and convenience of my Facebook network? - ollersmom, on 04/29/2009, -6/+26What the ***** is a twitter?
Isn't it just facebook for people with ADD? I don't understand the appeal... - neo991lb, on 04/29/2009, -6/+22I can't for the life of me think of why Facebook would envy Twitter. Twitter has a large user base but is not very feature rich. I see Twitter as a service for the very self-indulgent and narcissistic individual- you know, the kind of douche bag you don't want to be friends with in the first place?
I ***** hate Twitter though. Even friends updates on Facebook are too much for me if they are posted too often. If you are using Twitter as a microblog, go ***** your own face. - devophl, on 04/29/2009, -2/+18I've yet to understand twitter. My life isn't interesting enough for anyone to care what I do every 2 minutes. Second, I don't have enough time to continually update my status. Third, I'm not obsessed with anyone enough to want to know what they are up to every 2 minutes. After a while twitter just seems like the social networking equivalent of spam.
Facebook is more my pace. I update my status only when something interesting happens (about once or twice a week) and I get status updates from my friend only when something interesting is happening with them. - IHaveCrayons, on 04/29/2009, -0/+15Because they want their users to use only their service and not Twitter's? Seems kind of obvious to me.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+13Pussy.
Yeah, I am at work too. - GCarden, on 04/29/2009, -0/+13The New Facebook: It's like Twitter, but your mom's using it!
- roxgod666, on 04/29/2009, -1/+13Stalin of the social networking world.
- Nattybumpoe, on 04/29/2009, -4/+15***** twitter! No more twitter news until it's actually important.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+10I soooooooo wish I could ***** my own face.
- clickmyface, on 04/29/2009, -3/+12The entire concept / feature set of twitter is already embedded in Facebook in the form of status updates. I'm sticking with the notion that the majority of twitter users do not stay around more than a month. 20 million users, sure, but they'll all still be using facebook next month. And probably the month after.
- Locke23, on 04/29/2009, -0/+9At least from personal experience:
All the changes facebook has implemented made me go on it less and less each day, I dont know about other people. - krisrm, on 04/29/2009, -5/+14So, being a social reject is all of a sudden something to be proud of?
- hbball, on 04/29/2009, -1/+9And of course, in the process they're making Facebook worse. I rarely log in any more because the interesting information in the news feed has been replaced with info I couldn't care less about. They took away the option to read less information about certain people, so now whenever I log in, it's nothing but updates of "5 Actors I find dreamiest" about people I couldn't care less about. And all of that in a jumbled layout. Meanwhile, they got rid of some of the interesting things like who is new friends with whom, so that you know when new long-lost "friends" are on Facebook. Facebook has never been about what users want, but trying to give users what they think will make them log in. Think about the photo tag. You get notification by facebook mobile that you have been "tagged" in a photo by someone you don't even want to tag you in photos, and you log in to check it out, in case you want to delete it.
- Demistate, on 04/29/2009, -3/+11hahaha Privacy on Facebook. hahahhaha
- fartbarker, on 04/29/2009, -0/+7me too
i gave up trying years ago - VisualRhetoric, on 04/29/2009, -10/+17***** both "services".
- RatatRatR, on 04/29/2009, -0/+7Yeah, good luck with that. There'll probably be another Twitter story on the front within an hour.
- ModeSeven, on 04/29/2009, -1/+8Actually, according to Jason Calacanis, Microsoft tried to buy the site for 10 billion and Zuckerberg wouldn't sell. Apparently the guy is dead set on being the next Bill Gates and won't settle for anything less than total world domination.
- peestandingup, on 04/29/2009, -3/+10Maybe because Twitter lets me keep up & communicate with my friends in an actual relevant way instead of knowing what their top 5 pizza toppings are.
***** you, Facebook. You get worse everyday. - breakerjump, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6What's so funny? Just because you haven't figured out that Facebook has privacy settings doesn't mean others haven't. Facebook is as private as you make it.
- allfatherblack, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7"Twitter: the social networking equivalent of spam."
I can get behind that. - trafficlight, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6Facebook just can't be what Microsoft is. Microsoft is essential (less and less each day, but for a very long time) for both business and personal use. Facebook isn't.
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7Yeah, you're completely wrong. He's as much a part of Facebook as Kevin Rose is Digg, which is bigger than you'd think.
- Soupchicken, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6Dunno why you got dugg down.
It's really the truth. I keep my facebook account open solely in case I need to contact someone. Otherwise I don't bother going on. It's too cluttered for my taste. Kinda funny because people left myspace to go to facebook because of its clean, simple layout. I miss that.
Really I can't wait until the valuations of facebook begin to drop. I don't see why we can ignore the fact that there is no way to monetize such a diverse user base without charging a fee or making the adds more obtrusive.
They could prove me wrong though and come out with an innovative way to make money, but considering making money was never part of their business plan, it makes me skeptical that it could ever be worth what people are speculating.
tl;dr facebook is too ambitious for its own good. - Iwantawii, on 04/29/2009, -0/+6lolwut?
- futuretense, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7This is why twitter is different than FB status updates: You can do a twitter search and monitor a real time stream of information on a given subject with software like tweetdeck that isn't restricted to your friends the way facebbok is. For instance I have a client that hosts their site on Earthlink which went down for most of the day last Monday. Including Earthlink's site and their customer service department. I typed in a search for Earthlink and had a stream of updates about what was going on with other Earthlink customers. Earthlink didn't provide any information. Twitter was my only source for up to date info.
- whatthefu, on 04/29/2009, -4/+10***** Twitter.
- trezegol, on 04/29/2009, -1/+7I didn't understand a thing you said. Try adding a little "punctuation'?
- hansrodtang, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5Haha, I remember the Internet educational posters we had hanging around in the classroom when I was a kid. All kinds of rules that kids nowadays break every day.
- jsuther, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5So you have a bunch of files that are no longer secret? Boring!!!
- MScrip, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5And in recent reports... people are leaving Twitter as quickly as they got on.
- allfatherblack, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5I don't normally condone pointless aggression, but you didn't insult anyone so I'm just gonna go ahead and agree.
- toekneebullard, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5Paranoid? Have you seen how quickly a web service can fall out of relevancy and never recover?
- Scottamus, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5Twit is the new kid on the block is is getting all the attention. That it. Period. Once the newness wears off and everyone mimics it as much as possible and something newer and cooler comes out it will be like everyone else.
- Soupchicken, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5Except he's not nerdy-cool like Gates.
He's just nerdy. - roxgod666, on 04/29/2009, -1/+6Yeah, but Zuckerberg is making his members suffer and die from a terrible layout
- fartbarker, on 04/29/2009, -1/+6the best thing about twitter is the "delete account" option
- jvieira, on 04/29/2009, -5/+10***** twitter
- inactive, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but seeing that 3 of my friends are fans of "laughing" or took the "Which Sexual Position Are You?" quiz makes the newer Facebook model much less appealing.
- PxCxG, on 04/29/2009, -1/+5Your logic doesn't follow. But cool symbols.
- devophl, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4I got tired of MySpace very quickly. Finding friends was next to impossible even if they gave you enough information for you to find them, it wasn't a guarantee you could. Second, it seemed like some big web site for indy bands wanting a place to broadcast their music. Every profile page had some strange music embedded that I often had to hunt for and turn off. Third, it seemed to be the meeting place of horrible web designers. Allowing users to customize their profile pages led to some of the most obnoxious web pages I've ever seen. And finally, there was MySpace spam. When I first got onto MySpace, I would get around 10 friend requests a week, mostly from spammers wanting me to visit their porn site or some other weird web site. Enough MySpace... I moved on to Facebook!
- jmuh, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4I bet he doesn't even *own* a television!
