- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -6/+45when i was a pow in vietnam this soviet adviser who interrogated me told me he knew me better than i knew myself since he observed me in a raw state so much. when i saw him again in hawaii during the Reagan years, i shot him though. i dunno, i thought it was relevant.
- hungarian33, on 12/03/2007, -8/+34yeah, well. it is sad but true. Most rich people copy and exploit the work of others and take the credit for it. excellent story, definetly a digg.
- msaleem, on 12/03/2007, -3/+26I can't tell if this is supposed to be a joke. Ironic is right Mr. Zuckie
- TDot1980, on 12/03/2007, -3/+24You know what the easiest way to protect your private life and personal information on Facebook? Don't join! I hate all the whiners on Facebook complaining about how it violates your privacy and everyone knows everything about your life. Delete your account, or don't add every single app that was created, ever. OR, just don't put that much info on your account! Sheesh!

- HerrEisenheim, on 12/03/2007, -0/+13A billionaire? No. He's sitting on an extremely over-valued asset, which has a possibly value in the billions if someone can figure out a way to monetize the user-base. Most revenue (not profit) estimates of Facebook put it around $100m. It's not even known if Facebook has actually made a profit yet. It's been suggested by others that this year, in part thanks to the Microsoft deal, they might make $25m. Maybe.

- elnerdo, on 12/03/2007, -0/+9I know that by saying this I will sound like just another one of those annoying douchebags that think they know everything, but I'll say it anyway.
Basically, from what I understand (FWIU), this has been a really longstanding issue. From what I have heard from some close sources, Zuckerberg was hired to help some people write their social networking site, and then he mysteriously quit and started his own social networking site without ever finishing helping them, and presumably using the code that he wrote for them. - codered1322, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8He got busted in his own lies recently. He had cut five years off of his age so that the company appeared to be run by young hip people when it started up. Tom = Tool.
- time4wrk, on 12/03/2007, -2/+10i hope tom from myspace is next.
- shredomatic, on 12/03/2007, -1/+8After reading the 02138 article, this guy sounds like a total ***** and I hope he loses it all.
- suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -0/+6except, like mine the privacy settings usually seem to change back...
- fuzzmeister, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6"Open-source"?
Maybe in the future, but so far, open-source websites haven't really taken off. Mainly because of the problems of allowing everyone access to the code while still keeping it functional 100% of the time, and keeping user's data protected. - rainbowrandolph, on 12/03/2007, -2/+7This guy is a little bastard
- schmitey, on 12/03/2007, -1/+6Zuckerberg looks like one of those people that just needs to get bitch slapped a couple times. Or maybe its the bad haircut, square features, and his small fortune that bothers me...
- Shawn4168, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5Just one more reason for me not to use Facebook ever again. I would delete my account, but I just feel like I can't, because everybody I know and their mom is on Facebook, including old high school friends that I would have no means by which to contact otherwise. I went through the same predicament when I wanted to ditch AIM a few years ago. Thank God for Pidgin, at least. But we can only dream of an open-source, fully compatible alternative to Facebook.

- Frei, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4This lawsuit has been around way before that.
- mikkel1275, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5making a big deal about it just creates that much more publicity
- mCanada, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3GAAH Re-read HerrEisenheim's post. What Microsoft claims Facebook is worth is completely irrelevant. If I buy 1% of your company at 1Billion dollars it DOES NOT make your company worth 100 BILLION DOLLARS (or close to it).
- BoneheadFarker, on 12/03/2007, -5/+8There's an easy way to solve this. Give some money to the people he ripped off. For ***** sake, the guy is a billionaire. He can give back to the people he stole from...
- zantos420, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4sounds to me from the article rhetoric that Mark Zuckerberg deserves it if the people who attempted suing him for "theft of code" are right and on top have a couple more unfortunate events take place in his direction.
- slamtv7, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3Wow read his diary.
- mandarin, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3Wonder how did that fit the article?
- dbldee, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Hey It's always been said...
What goes around, comes around - clonkid, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Wow, reading his online diary shows that he is an evil little bastard.
"The Kirkland facebook is open on my computer desktop and some of these people have pretty horrendous facebook pics. I almost want to put some of these faces next to pictures of farm animals and have people vote on which is more attractive."
"Let the hacking begin. First on the list is Kirkland. They keep everything open and allow indexes in their Apache configuration, so a little wget magic is all that’s necessary to download the entire Kirkland facebook. Child’s play." - NathanielJ, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3Not only that, but it was hardly an original idea to begin with. A social networking site like MySpace, but geared towards an older audience. The reason Facebook took off isn't because of the "great idea" (it had been tried countless times before) or the snippets of code that ConnectU is whining about, but rather the implementation of the idea that was excellent before they added Apps and all that other annoying crap.
- bacon_skoda, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3assuming microsoft did not overpaid...by the millions.

- gbutton, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2Does your misuse of quotes cancel it out though?
- DeathfireD, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2"It's not exactly rare for two people to independently come up with the same idea."
Wile one works for the other? That is rare no matter how you look at it. - koreth, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2If he believes hard enough that everyone more successful than him all got there by stealing work from people like him, then his heart won't sink every time he looks in the mirror and wonders what he's doing with his life.
- HerrEisenheim, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2Microsoft's stake in Facebook is a strategic move. They want to buy it outright, but don't want to spend the money on something that's so ridiculously over valued. Even at $1.5B, 1/10th of what you just suggested, I'd still say that Facebook would be over valued. I don't think investors accurately understand the difficulties in monetization of internet properties. It's not like that of TV or print. That's why they get this insane valuations. Even YouTube at $1.6B was completely ridiculous, but monetizing YouTube is an order of magnitude easier than that of Facebook. You already know what you have to do with YouTube, you just have to do it in a way that doesn't alienate your audience. Facebook is a whole different story.
When the Facebook hype dies down, and the value of the company comes back to one which is normal on the planet Earth, Microsoft is just going to gobble them up. Steve Ballmer has already alluded to such things. Right now they are just beating their chest, and hovering around Facebook like a pack of wolves. If I were a betting man, I'd bet on Microsoft to aquire a controlling stake, if not just outright buy, Facebook within 5 years. Probably less. - Friern, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3You can hate Facebook, its potential overvaluation, or Zuckerberg's tactics to cover this up, but to suggest that these guys are definitely owed something just because Facebook is popular is hilarious.
The 02138 article says they were non-tech guys with an idea that was hardly original at the time (Friendster, Match.com etc. were spawning tons of knock-offs) and their model outline included: "Half the network would be a dating section." There were lots of experienced entrepreneurs trying out similar models way before these clowns. Unfortunately for them, the reason it took off was the simplicity, the environment in which it was launched, luck with timing, and the tech platform that probably had nothing to do with their idea. - tazamore, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3He can't. If he gave even a penny to anyone who claims to have invented Facebook then they could use that in court as an admission of guilt.
- Shawn4168, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2Yeah, you're probably right about that. Replace "open-source" in my above comment with "less evil".
- pcgeek101, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Why did this get removed from the front page?
