- agaiziunas, on 11/23/2008, -0/+86I can sum it up in just 1 DON'T:
DON'T post anything on Facebook you wouldn't want the internet to know. - xeno439, on 11/23/2008, -2/+57Use Facebook however you want to. This article is stupid.
- whirlingderv, on 11/23/2008, -0/+50Oh for sure, don't EVER post a picture of yourself in a wetsuit with a surfboard, people will get the wrong idea... they'll think you like to *surf* in your free time!!! You can NEVER bounce back from a slip-up like that!!! Welcome to the unemployment rolls, foolish surfers!
- ScottyAnimal, on 11/23/2008, -0/+28How about: Don't add your boss. Then they can see if you are slacking off during work hours.
- elvis699, on 11/23/2008, -0/+23I felt like i was in class when i read that :S
- Izzardo, on 11/23/2008, -1/+22'Don't post profile pictures that are "too sexy, cartoonish or that might alienate your audience."'
Where in the world? Politically Correct world. - alexanderhorre, on 11/23/2008, -0/+19This is pointless. If everybody followed this article, Facebook would cease to exist.
- Alejandro79, on 11/23/2008, -0/+18That bit about not posting pictures of yourself surfing or playing the guitar reminded me of this onion story: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27698 "Temp hides fun, fulfilling life from rest of office."
- HoolKin, on 11/23/2008, -0/+16"Oh, look..she's in a halloween costume in her profile picture, Ugh and she also likes to have fun on her free time, definitely DO NOT hire her, gross"
- Pusod, on 11/23/2008, -0/+14I use FACEBOOK to keep in touch with my old friends back in high school and college. I was a goofball then and i'm still a goofball now. Etiquette or not i'm still gonna be me. As for prospective employers snooping around... I have the presence of mind not to post anything too incriminating. I think we all know the drill.
- laserviking, on 11/23/2008, -0/+12What an absolute load of ***** *****. Looks like someone was forced to write an article about facebook.
- Bauer22, on 11/23/2008, -1/+12They forgot the most important don't.
Don't post ANYTHING on your ex's wall while drunk. - fabkebab, on 11/23/2008, -0/+11Wouldnt it be a dull world if everyone followed these rules - Basically the author is telling us to keep our online lives like an office cubicle because it gives us the best chance of finding employment
- sumguy231, on 11/23/2008, -0/+10Hint: If some place doesn't want to hire you because you have a life, then they probably aren't worth working for in the first place. And I'm not talking about drunken photos, pictures of bong hits, or belonging to neonazi groups either, I'm talking about that "don't post photos of you in biking gear or having fun whatsoever."
- RudolfDiesel, on 11/23/2008, -0/+10Not a very enlightening article, at all.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/23/2008, -0/+9Especially anything that starts with "IVE BEEN DOIGN A LOTT OF TIHINKING LAETLY".
- CoreyTamas, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9I think the idea is simply "be aware that not everyone who sees your Facebook page is necessarily your friend".
Once you've got that figured out you probably don't need the rest of the article. - OfficialJoe, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8I had to click through two pages to read this tripe. You heard me. TRIPE!
- agiulio86, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8Unfortunately not. Everything you do on the internet does not remain on the internet.
- alexanderhorre, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8However, people should refrain from polarizing items such as posting wild party pictures. Sometimes I can never understand how people can post a picture of them smoking a huge bong with a pile of weed on the table. People don't realize even though you've selected only friends to view...a friend of a friend can click on a tagged picture of him in that album, and then click 'next' to see all the other pictures...including you smoking that bong.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/23/2008, -1/+6I think it's less a matter of that "respect everyone's tastes and thoughts, no matter how unreasonable it is that you're asked to do so" political correctness and more a matter of not letting your boss or prospective employer see you drunk off your ass in Florida wearing a string of beads around your neck and nothing else... while you're supposed to be there on business.
- arbysrocks, on 11/23/2008, -3/+8Here's a don't for you. DON'T USE FACEBOOK.
- graemee, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5Don't post anything on Facbook, you don't want Facebook to OWN FOREVER!. Nice TOS Facebook.
- ScottyAnimal, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5like his friend wouldn't know I take bong rips.
- synthesis811, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5or simply make it so no one else apart from your friends can see your profile.
Problem solved. - Gizmort, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5I fell asleep reading this crap. Buried.
- cowbilly, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4what a boring tool
- Gizza, on 11/24/2008, -0/+4I find a good way to prevent things being posted on Facebook that I don't want people to see is to not do ***** that I don't want people to see.
If you're cheating on your SO, you deserve for them to find out in one way or another. - CoreyTamas, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3I think when someone says "Don't post pics of yourself that are too sexy" on Facebook, that person is trying to encourage you maintain the respect of people whose respect you want to keep. I don't think Dixson is saying "I'm an ugly cow and, if you're hot, I'm going to be jealous of you."
- MCA2142, on 11/23/2008, -0/+36. Don't get interviewed by Sarah Lacey.
- ChristBehemoth, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3don't tell me what to do!
- papermiles, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3or, instead of running your facebook like a resume:
don't add your boss
set your profile to private
change your privacy settings
you can untag yourself in pictures but it doesn't mean they won't still be up on someone else's facebook for all the world to see. - Christpunk01, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4Don't you mean "can't see"?
- rudanja, on 11/23/2008, -1/+3This is a stupid article. It is like old ladies suddenly woke up and realized what facebook is and trying to slap 'etiquette' on it. All of the 5 Do's and Don'ts are logical - unless you are a student, and that is how facebook started.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Great! Once again we're scared by the industry to project a version of ourselves that is "acceptable" to outside perceptions, and where the fear of what "others" will think is supposed to guide our actions. Let's get to the real heart of the matter- Judgementalism is the laziness produced by an uninquisitive mind. Post what you want and prepare to explain yourself, but for God's sake, please don't sterilize yourself based on the fears of other people's perception. No one is perfect; we ***** up, we learn and move on with our lives. That is the way it really works- dirty, messed up and real. Personally speaking- it's the judgmental one's that I really fear, for what are they hiding by pointing out your faults? Why do they feel the need? The lies that people tell themselves are far more interesting and damaging than the lies they tell others.
- CoreyTamas, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2I think the fact that people think it shouldn't happen is what makes people forget that it does happen... which is what Dixson is trying to say. If what I've heard lately on places like Digg is any indication, people need to be reminded that not everyone who sees your Facebook page is your friend... whether you like it or not.
Not the best article, that's for sure... but the point behind it is solid. - MScrip, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2> "All you need is 1 volunteer from every university to allow an interest to automatically crawl all the pictures of every student and you will have a name to face database of 95% of the college students in the country, and then some."
If you wanna set that up, go ahead. Suddenly, posting pictures of yourself isn't the problem... it's the people behind the great crawl who is cataloging everything on Facebook. Creepy much? - inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2I dislike the idea of a central searchable database where people can find pictures of you just by knowing your name. Sure, you can make it less accessible, but then what is the having it up in the first place?
All you need is 1 volunteer from every university to allow an interest to automatically crawl all the pictures of every student and you will have a name to face database of 95% of the college students in the country, and then some. - MScrip, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2> "So you have no idea what it is you are signing up for."
Yeah... because no one has ever heard of Facebook, knows anyone on Facebook, and have never read an article about Facebook.
It's a complete mystery! - zeblith, on 11/23/2008, -1/+3POST AWAY. It's why I'm on Facebook. I want every last indiscretion. It pops right up on my stalker feed. And bitch, I'll let you know about it: Now, later, and in 30 years. ;) OOOOOOOH!
- papermiles, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2sadly common sense is not very common.
if it was, dr.phil wouldn't have a t.v. show. - JudeMaverick, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2This is purely common sense.
- papermiles, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1if you don't want to run facebook like a resume, change your damn privacy settings. if someone really gets offended if you have a picture of yourself in a halloween costume and not in front of some mountains, they are probably a little wackadoo and best avoided anyway.
they only facebook etiquette people should follow is perhaps not posting pictures, links etc of other people that they may not want the entire world having access to. every event doesn't need to be a facebook event and no one needs 12 albums of drunk pictures. - hollywoodphony, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Um, chill out? It's just Facebook? Who cares?
- papermiles, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1while i may not want or care to see 1739 various drunken pictures of someone, it is their right to post them. if i don't want to read "let's get drinks at 5" on someone's wall, i should probably not read their wall instead of being offended that someone dare not send a private message.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1guilty
- bb112266, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1What I understand of the over all of what this article had sad can be summed up by this: use common sense. You are not the only one on the planet. Use the Golden Rule of life: "Treat others as you would want to be treated." If we think before we do something online, it will make all difference.
- inactive, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1You may Love Facebook, but According to this article it doesn't always love you back
- abaaa, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Hmm... How about businesses stop looking at people's facebook profiles and we all just post whatever the hell we want? That way we can just have lives outside of work and just be judged by the work that we are actually doing?
It's not like we're all surfing/smoking/partying at work. Work is work, and free time is free time. Get out of my facebook you're in myspace. - loopyloopy, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1#5 goes for just about all text based communication. tone is a very difficult thing to communicate in this way and i've often unwittingly upset people by not realizing how my 'tone' could be interpreted.
i guess that's why we have emoticons, ....but they're retarded.
